One of the big selling points of the Guardian of the Galaxy films is the music. There was a lot of discussion about which soundtrack was better. I had a hard time deciding which soundtrack I liked better so I resorted to math, lol. I gave each song a 1-10 number, added them up and divided it by how many singles were on that soundtrack.

Awesome Mix Vol. 1 6.75
Awesome Mix Vol. 2 7.71

No wonder how I couldn't decide which one I liked better! However, Awesome Mix Vol. 2 did suffer from "Brandy" which I gave a 0. I disliked the song before the film and now, it makes me cringe just listening to it. I also had another sad realization. I kind of noticed that nothing seemed to be after Meredith met Ego and James Gunn confirmed that there are no songs after 1979. Here's a woman described as "knowing the lyrics to every single song that came on the radio" and once she meets Ego and has Peter, that just...goes away? Now, I know my mom refers to the period of time when she had several small children at the same time as a lost time when she wasn't paying so much attention to pop culture (that would have been 1973-1977 so I don't think she missed much) but once the children get older, she gets back into things helped by Philip Glass, Wings, Genesis and more. I refuse to believe that Meredith Quill finds nothing between 1980 and 1988 in music worthy. Of course, it could also be taken as she only wanted the Awesome Mixes to be music that she had previously shared with his father because he never got to meet him...but Ego's a dick so I hate that interpretation, too, so sad all around.

Ooh, but I have a thought regarding the soundtrack...

SPOILERS

Under the rules of the first film, all songs played prior to Peter's new Awesome Mix are supposed to be from THAT Awesome Mix like Vol. 1 for the first film and Vol. 2 for the second.

Here's where that gets a little weird...

Yondu mentions that he placed the tracker after the battle on Xandar, before the troll doll exchange. It sort of implies that his crew and Peter's crew haven't seen each other since.

Here's the problem with that:
Rocket asks if they cloned/copied any of Peter's music and the song Kraglin comes up with wasn't from Vol. 1. Kraglin listens to another song later that wasn't Vol. 1 either. It could be that Peter had additional cassette tapes or it's the Zune mix or they had additional Terran music but previous music rules are that everything at that point should still be Vol. 2.

Peter didn't open Vol. 2 until after they separated after the battle on Xandar and had the troll doll exchange. This means they DID see each other again in between films and someone, either Yondu or Kraglin most likely, cloned the new Awesome Mix Vol. 2 during that meeting.

Also, it took me four viewings to realize that Peter is listening to the Zune/Awesome Mix Vol. 3 on Yondu's bed! Ugh, pheels.

Sing it with me now, Zardu Hasselfrau! Zardu Hasselfrau!
