Prologue: Karori Dharma's Other Name
Companions were the ultimate kind of courtesan who knew everything about every art and could get a person off with the power of their massage alone. They were also a fairy tale.
“Companions are a myth, they don’t exist,” said Karori.
“They exist here. Some myths are based in truth,” the redhead argued, “I used to think Reavers were made up, too, that nothing that awful could really exist.”
There was another bump followed by an explosive blast that resounded through the entire ship until it reached the cockpit. Karori felt electricity enter his body traveling until it reached his wrists where there were two pops and…blackness.
As a boy, he’d hid from them, but he’d lost Grey and was convinced that his little brother would have gone back home so he had ran through the aftermath of their attack. The Reavers left bodies, parts, blood and worse in their wake. His return home was met with his father’s death although his mom had remained unharmed. However, she’d always blamed him for losing Grey and he agreed with her. He deserved the worst for losing his little brother and now he’d lost Trea, too.
“Trea, Trea…” he mumbled in that state between sleeping and waking. His blue eyes slowly opened and he remembered where he was with a horrible lurch.
“Reavers,” he uttered into the diffused light and saw that he was back in the Medbay. His shirt had a new stain of red from his bullet wound being reopened and there was a burn starting with a mark on his boot up his leg and chest to his wrists. The cuff had slipped off, leaving a red blistered ring instead and his…shit, his wrist-strap was completely fried. He pressed the buttons as if he could make it come back, but it would need all new circuitry which also meant that he was stuck here. Karori set his feet on the floor for the second time that day and cringed at the pain. However, it was too quiet for the Reavers to have caught them and the light flickered in a way that suggested Kaylee was working on it. Then, there was an infant’s cry. It was instinct that led him to follow it to the empty room where the baby was in its crib. He recalled that the infant’s name was Hoban as it continued screaming. Hoban continued to scream as the man picked him up. However, his mind wasn’t as forthcoming as his daughter’s. Zoe or the other adults were bound to come soon, but he tried a trick that had worked well for him before. He stuck the edge of his pinky to the infant’s lips and it started to suck. This worked well until Zoe arrived.
“Get that digit out of my son’s mouth!” she screamed, “I don’t know where it’s been but I have a pretty good clue about it.”
Karori let go and handed him over.
“What would you know about babies anyway?” the woman asked as she turned to feed hers.
“I have a daughter who is two years, three months, two weeks and six days,” he revealed, full of pride in his voice. When her head turned, the look on her face was incredulous.
“I used to have the scar to prove it, but it went away,” Karori explained, his hand touching the part of his abdomen where it used to be. Zoe softened until he grinned and she took it all wrong.
“Probably don’t even know the father’s name.”
Karori wanted to have some smart retort to that, but was forced to admit, “Well, no, I never caught his name, never asked for mine either, kept calling me Jack.”
“River said your name was Karori. He didn’t even call you by your real name?”
A quick retort came to mind, ‘Like Karori Dharma was his real name either.’ Instead, he shrugged, saying, “Jack’s a nice name and he was worth it, gorgeous with dark hair and eyes. His skin was the shade of a good cup of coffee.”
“And you never even got his name,” she reiterated, laughing.
“Well, I had work and I never saw him again…should have gotten his name,” he agreed, another on his list of regrets he pretended not to have.
She continued to be amused and he asked without thinking, “What about yours?”
Her face grew grave and after a pause, answered, “He died.”
It was not how he meant it, but his social skills with people did seem to be lacking when fucking wasn’t involved. An awkward silence followed as she re-buttoned her shirt and burped him.
“They can be a handful,” he volunteered, trying to make the atmosphere more pleasant and Hoban’s light brown skin reminded him of when Trea was his age.
“I don’t know what I would have done if he was twins,” she said, kissing the boy’s forehead and taking a lingering look at plastic dinosaurs that lined the crib’s railing.
“They thought my daughter was twins at first,” Karori spoke, “because they thought they heard two heart beats.”
His injuries reminded him of their presence and he leaned against the crib for support.
“Glad they were wrong,” he added, “She scares me to no end all on her own.”
“I should see what progress had been made,” Zoe announced and he followed her out of the room, headed for the cockpit again. Not too far along the corridor, they met up with Mal.
“Kaylee’s been able to make enough repairs to reach the closest moon,” Mal told them, “where we’ll let you off.”
Right, he’d made that deal.
“And not a moment too soon,” the captain muttered, straightening his coat. Karori found his way to the cockpit where River was. She was so young to be the cause of so much controversy, just a little bit older than when he first joined up. He needed to think. The Alliance wanted this girl who could read minds. It’d be for the same reasons that he’d proven so successful for the Time Agency. Sulis had said her parents wanted her back, but they hadn’t even been on her mind and he trusted her brother more than Sulis. Sulis could even be working for the Alliance and he could never help the Alliance after what they did…the Reavers took everything.
Karori sighed. Without River, Trea was in mortal danger, but she wasn’t a normal toddler, right? Even now, he could feel her on the edges of his mind. What if he could warn her and they could sort out some way to reunite? She could find some way to tell him her location or something. Then, he’d take them someplace far away from all of this. He’d never been the domestic type but he’d try for her. First, he’d need his vortex manipulator fixed and he’d need more time so he would have to fail this mission in a particularly miserable fashion.
“Thank you,” said River, without looking at him and Karori waited until the moon was in sight. Then, he went up to Mal.
“I was sent here to take River.”
The captain readjusted his jaw and asked, “What do you want?”
“Make it look good,” the other said, simply. The entire crew gathered round as Simon pointed out where on the head.
“I think I know where to hit, doctor,” Jayne complained and raised the wrench.
“No, not that way…” came Simon’s voice as the pain exploded and Karori’s world went black.
“Damn, I thought you wouldn’t make it,” uttered a familiar voice as the world swum back into focus. Sulis stood over him, appearing to wear a bright green woollen hat and he blinked his eyes before stating, “You sent me after an innocent girl.”
“Really? She was innocent?” the other man mocked, “Of course, I knew she was innocent, that’s why I took your girl first.”
“When the Time Agency finds me…”
“With a busted wriststrap?” Sulis questioned, an evil glint in his hazel eyes, “but you’re right except that they’ve known where you were all along.”
Karori felt like he’d been punched right where his gunshot wound was.
“What?”
“I’m not actually a rogue agent but many have that perception and I use it to my advantage,” the blonde explained, licking his lips, “I do what they can’t admit to in public, like this.”
“But that would have supported the Alliance…”
