Heart to Heart by the Weevil

Gwen squeezed Ianto’s arm, so happy for him. Jack didn’t know how much his leaving had affected him and the nights they’d spent talking in the Himalayas. Presently, she had a new project. James was sitting at his desk and looked like he’d been crying. She pulled up a chair.

“Anything I could do to help?” she asked as sweet as she could, like when talking to a victim.

“Yes, I believe so,” James answered, “You can find people, yes? Even ones from years before?”

Inside, she cringed at what she knew had to be coming.

“Yes, mmhmm, I can,” she replied and couldn’t help fidgeting.

“Excellent, I would like to know the fates of my cousins as well as Elizabeth and Will and little Jamie…and I suppose Captain Jack,” he spoke with disdain before seeming to notice she wasn’t writing anything down, “I’ll make a list to set on your desk, will you do this…please?”

“Of course,” Gwen lied and thought again on Andy’s complaint that she’d grown hard. The deception came easier than it used to. It felt even worse when James brightened at her response. She smiled at him and went back towards Jack’s office.

“Ianto, can we talk?” she inquired, but in a way so he would know that he couldn’t refuse. Jack looked at them with a raised eyebrow but the younger man merely shrugged before they left together. She led him into the cells where they could have privacy.

“So, not a social call then,” he guessed. They hadn’t talked about it since she tried to in the phone call and other than Jack knowing exactly who had given her the coordinates, she never heard if he’d been punished over it which was probably a good thing. Still, she needed to know.

“Why did you tell me about Flat Holm?”

“I didn’t…” he started but it was way too late for that. He turned toward the wall and stuck his hands on his hips. After sighing, he placed the palms on the concrete wall instead.

“I don’t know,” he admitted; believable but she wanted more than that. Gwen leaned against the wall, looking up into his baby blues. Sometimes, Ianto needed a little more coaxing.

“You wouldn’t have let it go, you would have looked and looked until you found out anyway, but I hated…I hated seeing you like that when I already knew what had happened to him…,” he spoke, glancing back down at her, “maybe I needed someone else to share the secrets with…maybe I thought I could make you understand…what it was like…that you can’t fix everything…”

No, she couldn’t. She’d only made it worse yet she’d learned the lesson, hadn’t she? It was precisely why she hesitated to tell James what she knew. That screaming…she could still hear it. Another thought occurred to her.

“Have you been there?” she asked, remembering what he’d told her in the cold dark. There was a brief nod and she hugged him. His arms enveloped her as well and they rocked back and forth until Janet began a low moan.

“After I told Jack about my mum, I discovered that he’d put me on the non-admittance list,” Ianto told her and she nodded, saying, “I’m not sure if I could go back either…I’m not strong enough…if I can’t have things my way…”

“You and Rhys?” he questioned with concern.

“We’re alright,” she said automatically, a little too fast which he caught, “It’s hard…you know…he just wants a normal life and I can’t always give him that even though I want to.”

He embraced her again and she laid her head against his chest.

“He wants a baby,” she continued, feeling how Ianto tensed, “How can we have a baby? It’s not as though I can be relegated to desk duty or that I have a long life ahead of me. Let’s face it, at some point; Rhys would end up as a single parent.”

“Don’t talk that way!” he snapped, adding, “You don’t know that…”

However, his last words weren’t very convincing.

“I didn’t used to. I thought Suzie was irregular, but then Owen died twice and Tosh died and…and we’re not going to get old with the grandchildren on our knees,” Gwen said, unable to control her emotion and Ianto hugged her tight, kissing her cheek.

“It’s not unheard of; there are instances in the archives…”

She had to smile at his reverting back to facts and figures and things that made the most sense to him.

“James wants to know what happened to everyone he knew,” she spoke and he understood.

“You don’t want to tell him,” he guessed, correct once again.

“Yep,” she agreed and he shook his head.

“He needs to learn, it could be good for him so he can move on,” the younger man stated and he had a point. Maybe she could at least research the other names on the list. Then, she noticed an odd look on his face.

“What is it?”

“I have…an idea, since Rhys wants normalcy, what about a dinner party at my house?” he inquired and she liked this suggestion. She’d only been to his house a couple of times and Rhys had mentioned that they should have more couples activities.

“That’s a great idea,” she said, linking her arm with his as they walked back to the others.

*****************************************************

Ianto was looking through Tosh’s files and programs when he saw James walk towards Gwen. Over two weeks had passed and he still didn’t know everything she had on her hard drive. Gwen’s talk from the day before still weighed on his mind. It was all his own arguments except that he had been forced to argue against them to make her feel better, but that didn’t make them any less true. Even if Gwen could get maternity leave and the desk job, it wasn’t the same for the person leading them, was it? It wasn’t as though Jack would be able to stop like that. Their day together was the first time he remembered Jack taking a day off since…ever.

A month or two before Gwen had joined, there had been an accident with an artifact through the rift. He'd found himself pregnant with the royal heirs of a distant planet...three of them. Thank goodness, it had been far faster than the usual nine months, just thirty-six hours. His body was not built for that. He nearly died and Jack urged him to take Retcon afterwards, but he couldn't. He wanted to remember what it felt like to have that life inside him. It'd been incredible and then, he'd kissed each triplet before the ambassador took them away. Still, it was probably better that they didn't have children.
Ianto looked back up as James neared Gwen and wondered if she had done as he asked or whether he should try to rescue her.

Then, Jack burst down the stairs.

“Just got a report of at least two Weevils causing trouble, we have to go,” he informed them, putting on his coat and Ianto had to smile. Now, Gwen didn’t have to talk to James. He stood up and they all headed for the garage. However, Jack drove with James sitting up front so he could see the best. Onward, they rode to Bute Park. At least, there wouldn’t be a lot of hiding places but they would also have to RetCon onlookers unless they could be convinced the Weevils were wearing masks. They found them close to the Trim Trail and Ianto wondered how they had gotten so lost. Their behavior was probably due to their being scared. Unfortunately, the two aliens split up.

“Okay, Ianto and I…” started his lover until James started running after one of them, “will go after James. Gwen and Martha, you go after the other one.”

Running had to be his least favorite aspect of the job. It wasn’t very long before he had to stop and catch his breath as the others ran ahead. Then, Ianto went back to running so he found Jack watching James continue to run before tackling the Weevil.

“He didn’t stop,” said Jack with a bit of awe in his voice as James sat on the alien’s chest and looked in their direction. The other man had to be impressed as well. It was James’ first time with a Weevil. Martha and Gwen came running up, both huffing.

“He…he got away,” Martha informed them, half apologizing before seeing the new male recruit “James?”

But What Became of Captain Jack Sparrow?
