I'm sorry you were taken aback, and I'm not trying to be annoying by mentioning it. But it is never fun to have something ruined by spoilers, no matter what the fandom, or how obvious it may seem to you.

I get that for you it was Johnny Depp's cameo was advertised, but it certainly wasn't obvious for me, or for the friends I saw the movie with. Here in the UK, it was not publicised at all and the cameo was kept very well under wraps. I, or my friends, knew nothing about it, and all of us are on LJ, and within "fandom" and are pretty well clued up when it comes to this stuff.

I guess my point is that just because it is obvious for you, there are people from other areas, or even countries who have not been exposed to the same information. And I don't think it is that unfair to expect basic netiquette when it comes to spoilers. I know the internet is for free expression, but at the same time, it isn't that difficult to put things behind a cut or leave things out for those who haven't seen the movie. Yes, there are different levels of spoilers as you point out, but I think so much of Depp's cameo relies on the fact that it is a surprise. And once that surprise is gone, you can't get that back.
