Oohh I saw the polar bear as hope! That despite everything, life went on beyond the train, and now they were free to leave that awful endless circle of 'life' behind and begin anew. This time without making the mistakes of before. Interesting what your mom thought!
I think I missed something by not seeing it in theatre - too many ups and downs, messing with the dog, phone distractions, etc. Thank you for answering, you gave me things to think about. I didn't know its history at all, either.
