Orlando

(sighs)
On Friday, a singer took the stage in Orlando. She was named after a singer murdered by an obsessive fan. Ten minutes away, her BFF and soul sister was killed by an obsessive fan.

That alone would be bad enough. It's Florida and it garnered national attention, international attention. Because it's always Florida and I could think maybe it's just me, maybe it just seems that way but it's not. For the 10th anniversary of The Daily Show, they compiled statistics including which stories happened in which states and which states showed up the most. Florida was #1 and it wasn't even close, at all. I don't know why.

The guy who murdered her was from St. Petersburg. This means he listened to 93.3 on the radio in the car just like my mom and me. It's disturbing especially when I think about the afternoon DJ and how he would make me feel uncomfortable with his obsessions with young female singers. The DJ would give away tickets to Selena's concert, again that very same night, but you would have to guess which body part of Selena that the DJ liked best or make a haiku about Selena.

Christina Grimmie was 22.
No one deserves to be murdered at 22.
No one deserves to be murdered.

All of that was bad enough and then, Sunday happened...just ten minutes away from the murder on Friday.

I blew up at a couple of my coworkers, including a manager, because they insisted...Terror Attack, ISIS, what have you...and I found myself wondering why. What does it matter? And I kept thinking about when Dumbledore eulogized Cedric Diggory.

"Today we acknowledge a really terrible loss. Cedric Diggory was as you all know, exceptionally hard working, infinitely fair-minded and most importantly a fierce, fierce friend. Now I think therefore you have the right to know exactly how he died. You see, Cedric Diggory was murdered by Lord Voldemort. The Ministry of Magic does not wish me to tell you this, but not to do so I think would be an insult to his memory."

You see, the Ministry of Magic wanted to hide the truth about his death. They wanted to make it into a tragic accident instead of murder by Lord Voldemort.

This is how I feel about the victims of Orlando. When people say that it was simply a terror attack, this isn't true. THEY WERE SPECIFICALLY TARGETED!

They were Latino/Latinx/Hispanic.
They were either part of the LGBTQUIA+ community or aligned with them.

To not admit this is to insult their memory. They were brave just by walking into those doors and accepting themselves. They were martyred for how God made them, not their nationality. They were murdered for being different.

However, people like the terrorism angle. They like to pretend the victims weren't gay or they would have to admit that they're not Cedric Diggory or Dobby or anyone else who bravely perished in the Harry Potter series. They haven't even redeemed themselves to fill Snape's role. No, these people are akin to the Dursleys and the Blacks.
The Dursleys would rather physically and mentally abuse a child, imprison said child and deny his self than admit that their nephew was born different. The Blacks bullied their son into continuing their values and beliefs until he ran away and they disowned them.
The LGBTQIA+ community knows all about Dursleys and Blacks. They all have their own stories. Some end happily and some end in suicide or murder.

I was also worried about whether the media would show the victims. Brown skinned victims usually aren't what they prefer. It's so easy just to show the shooter of Afghan descent since that's the narrative they want...that everyone with brown skin must either be a terrorist or an illegal immigrant or both.

Today, I was saddened to see that my Harry Potter thoughts were more apt than ever...

He may have said his Favorite Class was Defense Against the Dark Arts and his Favorite Spell was Avada Kedavra but he was a true Gryffindor if anyone is deserving of that title.

Today, the Forbidden Journey was closed in mourning.
Luis was also just 22.

"Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right, and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good and kind and brave because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort."

Thank you for this. I found a transcript on Tumblr before following/liking/whatever him everywhere else. He seems pretty awesome.
