Alien Entrails
"What is it, dad?" Alice asked and considered standing up although the couch was very comfortable. His face was usually so youthful yet now she could see all the lines creased in it.
"Down," Iefan requested and he set him down. The toddler ran over to sit beside Alice on the couch.
"Modi sick," he said and she put her arm around him.
"That's fine, people get sick. I'm sure she will be all better tomorrow," Alice spoke, but Iefan's face was quizzical and Jack was shaking his head. He stuck his hands in his coat pockets before uttering, "Not this."
She was sure she would have known if there was an accident so it had to be something else.
Cancer? She mouthed to him.
"Cansah?" Iefan asked and she'd forgotten that it was no use spelling or mouthing when the toddler in question could hear your thoughts just fine.
"Yes, they've been treating it for over a month now, but..." he stopped and shook his head.
"Did something happen? Did she have to go to emergency?" Alice asked and rubbed Iefan's back.
"No, no, it's just that...she can't watch Iefan anymore and I was expecting this, but...what if it means it's not going the way it should?" he questioned and she felt sorry for her father. He was having real attachments with consequences instead of a relationship based on duty as she had sometimes felt before.
"I don't know Rhi well, but she seemed like a strong person, she'll get through this," Alice spoke, "and it won't do for you to worry over it, too. What about Iefan? What will you do about him?"
"I don't know," Jack admitted and went to take off his coat. Even though he said he'd been expecting it, he still hadn't planned for it. She supposed all his regular minders had jobs or school of their own. Daycare would be out of the question in case something happened like with Lucia. He wouldn't appear normal enough. There was only one thing to do.
"I'll watch him," Alice volunteered. Her dad came back and hesitated, "Are you sure you're up for that?"
His gaze went to her middle. She was almost five months along, but she wasn't an invalid. Still, she appreciated his concern, another sign that he had changed.
"We'll be fine," she assured him and tousled Iefan's hair which wasn't quite as blond as she remembered.
"We can try it tomorrow and see what happens. Remember he's...he's a special boy," Jack spoke and they both knew what he was referring to.
"I know," she agreed and hugged Iefan, "and Lula will appreciate the company."

David dropped off his rucky by the desk. He was probably going to have to stay up all night and...
"What's this?" he asked of the shopping bag on the chair. David picked it up and saw that it was the book he needed for class.
"Emyr! Emyr, I said it was too expensive," David complained.
"Yes, but you also said you needed it so we'll manage somehow," Emyr spoke while holding a bowl of cheap noodles. David hoped "manage" wouldn't entail begging money from one of their folks.
"I'll fix you up a bowl," Emyr said and went back to the kitchen.
"And some chocolate milk," David requested and Emyr waved a hand that he heard.

Her dad had to go into work early so Iefan was still asleep. Alice raised one sleepy eye at the clock and fell back asleep. When she woke up again, she knew the toddler had to be up by now. However, he was still in his room and pulling at the drawers with his clothes inside. His bedtime clothes were scattered on the floor.
"We can find some new clothes for tonight," she suggested and put them in the hamper, "So, you're a big boy now? You can put on your own clothes?"
Iefan nodded and she smiled before adding, "But first, you have to have a new nappy."
"No," Iefan said and shook his head.
"You've had the same one all night, you need a new one," she maintained despite his frown. It some time and a distraction by Lula, but she finally got him into a fresh nappy. She hadn't noticed the neon green on his toenails before and made a note to ask Jack about it. Then, Alice opened the bottom of the chest of drawers for him. "No, that's shorts, this is wintertime..." she started and decided not to press the issue when remembering what Lucia and Steven had been like, "Fine, but if you go out, you'll have to change."
After changing into blue shorts and a shirt with a cartoon character from one of those Disney films, he pointed down the stairs and asked, "Modi?"
"No, she's not coming today. You have me instead," she said and picked him up although her doctor had warned her against heavy lifting, including thirty-three pound toddlers, "You want to know a secret?"
Iefan nodded.
"I'm not really your aunt. Rhi's your only aunt. I'm your big sister. You can cal me that if you want," she explained and laughed at how weird that sounded, "My dad is your taddy and I know I haven't been the best sister since Christmas, but I want to change that. I want to be a good one and maybe Lucia will be a good big sister to her new sibling. She's your niece. It's complicated, I know but that's Jack. He makes everything more complicated but hopefully, you won't find that out for a really long time."
She sighed and added, "And not the way I did."

Gwen tried to shake the entrails off before making a face. It hadn't been a good day. From the moment that Weevils were making a nuisance at Brute Park in the early morning until now, they were always on the go. This particular alien had an unknown blaster it'd been waving at them in a prominent place on the Plass. He couldn't have picked the invisible lift? Then, when Bernie shot him, he just blew up. His alien blood dripped yellow from her clothes.
"Bernie, Lois, can you wrap things up?" Gwen asked and they nodded, "Time for a shower and home. You do the same."
She locked eyes with Jack who reached in his coat for his mobile.
"Alice, I'll be home in an hour or less...we'll talk about things later...yep, bye," he said and hung up. Was Alice taking care of Iefan? Gwen thought Rhi always watched him. If only Jack was more forthcoming with his private life, she wouldn't have to guess at things. It wasn't just her. He didn't talk with anyone in Torchwood. They may be colleagues, but Jack didn't chat with any of them much.
*********************************************************
Jack had dropped off Iefan with Rhys and was waiting in a chair outside Alice' appointment. She'd wanted him to come and he wanted to make an effort at being the father he should be for her. A moment later, the door opened and a head popped out, "Mr. Harkness, we're ready for you now."
He followed her inside the room and she remarked, "You look much younger than I would have guessed for having a daughter Alice' age."
Alice looked away. She hadn't told him that she was going to be honest with her doctor.
"I had Alice when I was very young," he amended and the other smiled in politeness. Alice' stomach was exposed and looked bigger than her clothes made it look.
"We're going to take a look at this baby and discuss some things," the doctor said and Jack's worry rose. He didn't like the way she had said that. She pressed some buttons, put the gel on Alice and waved the wand around. A picture formed on the screen and he could make out a baby...his newest grandchild.
"That's the heartbeat," she pointed out and a sound echoed around the room, "it, the limbs and head are all developing nicely. The size puts it above average for this point so that accounts for your larger size than I'd expect for yout gestational age. Do you want to know the sex?"
Alice stretched out her hand and Jack knew to take it. She squeezed hard as she replied, "Yes."
"It's a girl! Is that what you wanted?" the doctor asked and Alice sighed, "Sometimes with an older daughter, they're hoping for a son."
"No, no," Alice insisted and shook her head, "this is just what I wanted, another girl."
There was something about her tone that Jack found odd. Still, it was forgotten as he saw the little girl wave her arms and kick. His daughter wore a huge smile as well.

Mmmm, does she sounds strange, because she is wishing for a new Steven or because she wants no boy who would remind her of him?
I am curious about the next chapter, but thanks for this one!

I know Jack wants to be less of a workaholic, but that doesn't mean he should block Gwen out. She means well.
