The Time Warrior
Today was fabbity beyond measure, Mica thought. Everything was going her way. Her paper got high marks, her homework was already done and the cute new boy smiled at her. Mica opened the door and was about to bound up the stairs to put her rucky away. Then, she saw them seated, waiting for her. As much as she loved seeing her Uncle Jack, this couldn't be good news.
"What is it?"
"Why don't you sit down, Mica," her mum suggested and patted the couch. She shook her head.
"Just tell me."
"Mica-" her mum started but was cut off by Jack who looked like he'd been crying but tried to clean himself up.
"Mica, Sarah Jane passed away," he said with his hands on his knees. That...that was odd phrasing, people usually said that when...no, not that.
"I don't understand. What do you mean?" Mica asked.
"She's dead, sweetheart," her mum spoke and her chest felt tight especially with the little used sweetheart on the end.
"No, no, you lie. That's not possible," she said, shaking her head. Her mum and Jack stood up, coming closer.
"I just got an email last week, she was fine. Don't lie to me. She's not dead!" she shouted.
"She is," Jack spoke in a soft voice.
"No, she's not! She's not! She's not! She's not! There has to be a different explanation. You heard it wrong...or something, you're just wrong!" she shouted and ran up the stairs, not wanting to see them anymore.

Rhi watched her start up and saw Jack about to go after her. She took his arm.
"Leave her, Jack. She's not in a state to see reason right now. She's only fourteen," Rhi spoke and shook her head, "What am I going do with her?"
Mica couldn't just be told. She was the sort that needed proof or preferably, to see for herself. It would entail a trip to Ealing. Rhi felt so tired.
"I could take her to Ealing. Luke might not know exactly what Sarah Jane had and I can't imagine letting some of that fall into the wrong hands," Jack spoke and she nodded.
However, she couldn't help thinking about the drinking earlier in the year and she doubted Alice would be going along. Last time that Rhi saw her, she simply looked huge for being just six or seven months gone. There wasn't much choice though and Rhi reminded herself about the counseling with Selene. It seemed to be going well and they might be able to support each other.
"I suppose that's for the best," Rhi agreed, "She hasn't really missed because of me and it won't do any good to send her to school this week."
She sighed.
"I'll come up for the funeral, I will but..." she stopped and tried to compose herself. Jack hugged her.
"It's okay," he tried to utter but it didn't do any good.
"No, it's bloody not. I'm her mum. I should be there for her and I...I can't because I'm not up for it. What kind of mum is that? I'm useless," she complained and Jack hugged her harder.
"It's not your fault and soon, you're going to be just fine. Plus, with you staying here, I need you and David to do something for me. Martha thinks Alice's baby will be early-"
"Her due date looks off to me," Rhi interrupted.
"Either way, I don't like leaving her alone this long with just Lucy and Iefan and the puppy. I'd feel better if someone checks on her from time to time, lets her have some time to herself," Jack spoke and she was glad to be able to do something.
"Of course, we'll do that, you can come back in the morning, I'll have her ready," said Rhi and tried to smile but she was starting to get a headache.
Mica was convinced that when she woke up to the sounds of OneRepublic, it was all going to be a dream. No one had said anything last night while eating so it must have been a figment of her imagination and a horrible one at that. She had even re-read the last email. Nothing was out of the ordinary. She didn't mention being sick. Mica supposed it could have been something quick like her uncle, but...
She couldn't imagine it. No, they had to be wrong. There was no way that Sarah Jane could be dead. It was impossible. Then, her bedroom door opened and her mum came in with a suitcase.
"Uncle Jack's going to take you to Ealing for the rest of the week so you need to get packed," she said and Mica frowned. They still insisted on saying it was true. She supposed it was better to play along and Luke would explain what was really going on. Mica went to look through her shirts.

"I passed that exam and I have coffee!" Emyr yelled as he came in and David wrapped his arms around him.
"That's fantastic," David told him but his tone gave him away.
"What is it?" Emyr asked.
"Sarah Jane's dead," David answered and it just sounded weird.
"Oh, no...that's..." Emyr appeared at a loss and hugged David in a tight embrace, "What about Mica? How's she taking it?"
"She's not. She thinks they're lying so Jack is taking her to Luke," David explained, "and..."
Emyr kissed his cheek and David let himself cry into his shoulder. He wasn't sure whether it was just because of Sarah Jane or how she died or how it reminded him of the other deaths, like his uncle or a combination. When he had composed himself, he added, "Jack made my mum promise to check in on Alice and the kids."
"We can do that, too. We're closer," Emyr suggested and David was grateful for him.

Gwen picked up the phone without checking who the caller was since she was expecting it to be Rhys, making sure she was fine.
"Gwen Cooper, how can I help you today?" she asked, expecting Rhys to have a cheeky reply.
"Chief Constable Swanson here, we had an explosion in Leckwirth. I thought maybe you could come out," she said and Gwen was surprised. Torchwood wasn't well-liked especially since Andy left.
"Of course, but we didn't see anything on our end to support aliens," Gwen told her.
"I'd take your aliens over terrorists," Swanson replied in a tired tone and Gwen had to agree.
**********************************************************
"Do you want me to read you a story?" Alice asked and Iefan nodded, "Go pick one out."
"I want a story," Lucia complained between bites of her sandwich.
"Not right now, princess, we have to be extra nice to Iefan. His tad's away and he just has us," Alice explained but her daughter still pouted.
"I love you," she said and kissed her.
"Non si può mai parlare," Lucia complained.
"It'd be rude. Iefan and Uncle Jack don't know Italian like we do, but we can all speak and understand English," she said and Lucia had an odd expression when she mentioned Jack that time. She didn't know, did she?
"Maybe we could call Papa later," Alice suggested and Lucia's green eyes light up. Iefan returned. He was carrying a well-worn copy of the first Harry Potter book.
**********************************************************
Mica was beginning to get nervous as they drove onto Bannerman Road. She didn't feel well.
"Let's go back home," she suggested and Jack shook his head. He parked on the street since the front was full with Sarah Jane and Luke's vehicle. She touched the green Nissan Figaro as they walked up to the door. It opened before they could knock or ring the doorbell. Luke was there in a scruffy shirt and torn jeans.
"It's good to see you two. I understand that this is typically a shared event? I don't know how it works. I've never done it before," Luke said and his blue eyes were shiny. She had never seen Luke cry.
"No! No!" Mica yelled and found the tears coming to her own eyes. It wasn't true. She pushed past Luke into the house and it had an odd emptiness to it.
"Sarah Jane! Sarah Jane, where are you? Sarah jane!" she yelled as she ran through the house before arriving in the attic. She watched Mr. Smith become active.
"Miss Davies, I'm afraid Sarah Jane is not here. Furthermore, K9 reported a loss of her life signs yesterday and Luke has confirmed this. Sarah Jane is what is commonly referred to as dead," Mr. Smith intoned and Mica began to weep. Mr. Smith was never wrong.
