“It sounds…silly, but I almost think he knew…that last phone call, I know he was trying to warn me, but he told me he loved me. He told me he loved the kids; that he was even warming up to Johnny,” Rhi spoke and chewed her lip for a second, “I can’t even remember the time before that when he said he’d loved me. We just weren’t that type of family and all those other times when something was going on…it was the only time I got a phone call like that.”
It was a possibility. It was always a possibility, but Jack hated the thought that Ianto would have known. No, he didn’t accept that Ianto had known and gone anyway. It was easier to blame himself. He stuck the straw in his tea.
“Never got to see him as much as I would have liked. Oh, Ianto was there for Christmas and his bi-monthly appearance, but you couldn’t count on him coming for birthdays or school plays. He was always working,” Rhi spoke and it cut him to his core. How many times had he made Gwen go home to Rhys? How many times had he reminded her how important having a normal life outside of work was? Not once had he done the same to Ianto. When he was first hiring recruits; Suzie hated her father, Owen put down “no one” for his medical contact and Tosh was only allowed limited contact with her family. It had never occurred to him that both of his newest employees had families they were neglecting.
“I’m sorry,” he apologized and she let go of his hand, looking down at the table for a minute.
“It wasn’t your fault alone. I could have tried harder. I could have visited him at work. I could have done like I did today and convince him to come to lunch with me. He shouldn’t have been expected to come to Newport every time just because I have kids and he didn’t…” she paused and he knew she was thinking the same thing he was. Ianto never would have kids of his own.
“I said it’d be quick,” said the waitress, returning with their food and setting it in the right spots.
“Miss,” Rhi spoke with a polite smile, “If you want a bigger tip, only come to this table when we call you.”
“Yes, ma’am,” said the girl and left them. The smile disappeared from the woman’s face as well.
“That first day when the kids were saying the same thing, he came and wanted to take Mica to McDonalds and a movie. I didn’t let him. I had a bad feeling,” she explained and he didn’t want to tell her that it was for the best. If she had let her daughter go, Mica might have been involved in the explosion. It was an awful thought.
“Still, she’s only six. I know there’s the very real possibility that she won’t remember her uncle at all,” said Rhi, picking up a chip.
“But you’ll tell her and David all about their uncle and how he saved their lives,” Jack reminded her and she nodded, but there was still a concerned expression.
“The two of them still saw Ianto more than they’ve seen Johnny’s brother. He lives in Australia and they’ve only been here a couple of times since Mica was born. Johnny’s dad died a long time ago and his mum is in a home,”she spoke, took a bite and swallowed, “I just wish they could have the best and I fail at it.”
“But you try and that’s important,” Jack told her and she pushed a lock of her dark hair behind her ear.
“Thanks,” she uttered and drank her lemonade.
He rearranged the roast beef and pastrami on rye on his plate. However, despite the conversation, his appetite had returned in tenfold. It was good though. His weight had dropped enough from not wanting to eat anything after everything had happened that he was using three holes tighter than usual on his belt and this made him feel normal as they ate together.
Jack watched her go as he leaned against the fence on the plas. After a little wave, he pulled out his mobile and called up Lois.
“It’s Jack, I need to know how to get in touch with Johnson,” he spoke and heard a noise of hesitation on the other end.
“What is it?”
“Johnson is in custody. They keep making her tell her version of events over and over. They’re not sure whether to press charges or let her keep her job or what,” Lois informed and he sighed.
“It’s like Tosh all over again,” he muttered to himself.
“Sorry, didn’t quite catch it,” the voice on the other end spoke.
“It was nothing; I’ll take care of Johnson. There’s something I need from her,” Jack told her and was about to hang up.
“Wait, you were going to get a call anyway,” she stopped him.
“What for?”
“The latest theory is that Alice was able to get a message through to Joe somehow about Steven and what her wishes were so that’s why he started ducking the government. But, he’s been found…” she started and she hadn’t said “found” in a good way, “There was a train crash in Italy two days ago. It was also carrying petroleum so it blew up afterwards. At least twenty people have died and we’ve confirmed that two of those were Joe Carter and his wife.”
Jack had never liked his son-in-law, but Alice had once upon a time and Steven did, of course. He thought of the Christmas when Steven was just toddling around and Joe had picked his son up; giving him an airplane ride. The boy had shrieked with joy as his father carried him around the house with Jack and Alice watching.
“Thanks, Lois, maybe we can transfer you to Cardiff soon,” he replied.
“That would be nice,” she agreed and he hung up. He ran to the trailer and pounded on the door until Gwen came out.
“Jack, what is it? What’s this racket?” she exclaimed in an annoyed voice but he knew she didn’t mean it. Her brown eyes were too happy.
“We’re going to London to break Johnson out of prison,” he answered with a smile.
“I can’t wait,” she said and laughed, “Let me get some things.”
Five days later, Jack knocked on the Davies door and it was answered by Mica.
“Mica, how many times have I told you not to answer the door? It could be a stranger,” Rhi scolded and the little girl shrugged.
“It’s not a stranger though, it’s him,” she said, pointing. Her mum frowned and corrected her, “Uncle Jack.”
“Uncle Jack,” Mica repeated and left for the inside of the house.
“I want her to be more cautious in case something should happen again, but she has no fear. Too much Jones in her, I suppose. What brings you here, Jack?” she asked, crossing her arms, “Did you want to come in? I could fix tea and we have biscuits.”
“No, I’m just dropping something off,” he replied and held up a disc.
“What’s this?” she questioned, taking it from him.
“Just something I thought you’d like,” the man answered and hoped to get away before a full explanation. He had no such luck. With one look from her, he found it impossible to leave.
“It’s that last phone call; almost the last one he ever made,” Jack told her with his hands in his pockets.
“Oh, Jack, you don’t know how much this means to me…or maybe you do,” she declared, hugging him, “I have been looking through all my things for some scrap of a song we may have sung together or a video. I know we fooled around with a neighbor’s camera once, but they moved and they must have taken it with them.”
She let him go and held up the shiny disc.
“It’s…it’s kind of silly, but sometimes, I call his mobile and wait for him to talk, just to hear his voice,” Rhi spoke and her earrings bounced.
“That’s not silly,” said Jack and rolled up his sleeve, “I’m wearing his watch. I wear it and it’s like…part of him still’s with me. He loved the coat, too.”
“It’s a good coat,” she agreed with a nod.
“If you ever want to talk, you know my number,” Jack reminded her and went back to his car.
