July 19th, 2009

Jack sat in the trailer in the middle of July on an overstuffed chair. He was twiddling with the keys, twirling them around. The noise filled the small space until Gwen turned around, “Maybe we should have sent you for the coffee instead of Lois and Johnson.”

“I could have gone with them,” he retorted, “it could easily take three people to get beverages.”
Gwen rolled her brown eyes so he started spinning the keys again.

“He had more keys than a cleaner,” she commented and he replied, “Well, he was our cleaner.”
The Welshwoman spun around in her chair to face him, saying, “I bet you don’t even know what every single key does.”
Jack was never one to turn down a bet.

“What do you want to bet?” he asked and was actually excited. She thought for a moment and answered, “If I win, then you have to be my on-call babysitter.”
Her grin was big enough to show the gap between her front teeth. He hadn’t seen that in awhile.

“Fine, but if I win, I want my own gun again,” Jack said.

“And we’d let you have one if you weren’t just going to kill yourself with it…”

“I’m not going to kill myself…and besides, I’ll always come back,” he argued and she glared.

“That is not a good argument for giving you one,” she quipped and he twirled the keys again.

“Still, a bet’s a bet, do you agree?” he asked and held out his hand.

“Fine,” she acquiesced and shook.

“This is the key to the SUV that was nicked, this one went to the tourist office door, the hothouse, the boardroom, the utility room, game room…”

“So, half of the keys have absolutely no purpose now?” Gwen inquired and he continued without a comment, “Ianto’s black car, Ianto’s red car, my car, front door, back door, safe, desk, cabinet, handcuff key, second handcuffs key, third handcuffs, fourth handcuffs, gate…”
He stopped which she took as a win, but he knew exactly what it was. He’d just never paid enough attention to realize that Ianto had one.

“Gwen, you’re a genius!” he cried, hugging her and kissing her cheek.

“Of course,” she agreed but as he started leaving for the door, he heard her call after him, “Does that mean I won?”

Jack ran to the carpark so he could get to the bank before it closed. The manager was a nice man especially when Jack explained the situation and that he had civil partnership papers with Ianto. He led him down to the safety deposit boxes and borrowed the key from Jack to open the little door.

“It was a curious deposit. Every ten months or so, the young gentleman would drop off one of these journals. Nothing else, just this,” the manager spoke as Jack looked inside. He took the diary off the top and checked the last entry: August 2, 2008 along with the codes written backwards. The line “I know he loves me when he smiles like that.” jumped out at him.

“Oh, these are worth more to me than all the jewels in the universe,” the former time agent told him. The other’s face softened and he asked, “They were all his?”

“Yes,” Jack confirmed, “I’m just going to take this one for now.”

“I’ll transfer it into your name for next time, sir,” said the manager who didn’t comment on the cringe that the taller man couldn’t help doing at that final word.
He walked out of the bank with the diary secure in a coat pocket. Then, his mobile chirped.

“Captain Jack Harkness here,” he answered and wished he’d looked at the called ID first.

“Bill Shipton again, I’m sure you heard about Joe and his wife, tragic, but you have the power to give Steven the proper sendoff he deserves,” the man said on the other end.

“Fuck off,” he spat without thinking. He could count on one hand the number of times he’d said that word. There was nervous laughter and Shipton continued, “We’re prepared to give you whatever you desire. Maybe even a duke or lordship, eh?”

“If you knew the size of my bank account, you’d see that I can attain almost anything I’d want for myself,” he retorted and was about to end the call.

“We can do anything, anything you desire, just name it,” Shipton persisted and Jack took the microphone to his lips, “YOU CAN’T BRING THEM BACK!!!”
Then, he hung up before that man could say another word.

July was about to turn into August and it looked like another Friday with nothing to do. They’d already trained Lois and Johnson on what they could. He made his way outside and dialed a number on his mobile.

“Hello,” came the voice on the other end.

“It’s Jack, I was thinking about things and would you mind if I took Mica out today?” he asked, not sure how she would answer.

“Oh, that’s perfect!” Rhi agreed, “David’s at a friend’s house all day. Do you want me to come drop her off at the fence?”

“Yeah, that’ll be fine,” he spoke, “I’ll see you in twenty minutes.”

Traffic made it a bit longer than that and Gwen insisted on waiting with him. Hopefully, she wouldn’t invite herself along. He thought it would be good if it were just the two of them. The door of the car opened and the girl bounded out before stopping.

“Bye Mica, love you, have fun with Uncle Jack!” she called and sped away.

“Uncle Jack,” she spoke as if unsure and then her gaze went behind him. She made a sound of glee and ran for the fence beside him.

“JCB,” she identified and pointed to the large vehicle. He had been told Ianto had used one to rescue him although he couldn't remember any of it.

“That’s right and they’re going to put in a rope lift so we can go down into the hole without using the rope ladder,” he explained while pointing to the various objects.

“Can we go into the hole?” asked Mica, “please!”

“No, your mum would kill me,” said Jack and when she looked incredulous, added, “No, she really would and she’d probably enjoy it. What movie do you want to see today?”

“I want to see the one with guinea pigs,” she answered with a smile, “They have guns.”

“Wow, that sounds like quality, it’s guinea pigs with guns. You have fun, Jack,” Gwen spoke, patting him on the shoulder before leaving.

“And then the mice say, ‘Poop in his hand’”, Mica informed him and giggled.

“I can’t wait,” Jack told her while using his years of experience at keeping a straight face. Actually, the toughest part in watching the film was not critiquing the technology. Some of it was just ridiculous. The spectacles alone weren’t due to be developed for at least another fifty years. Torchwood’s contacts lenses were still the most advanced thing on Earth. Still, Mica liked it. She actually skipped out of the theatre.

“McDonalds?” he asked her and she stopped for a moment.

“Yes!” she exclaimed and jumped in the air.

“I thought they’d have the guinea pigs,” Mica complained as they looked at the advert on the door.

“This one has a knife and an eye patch,” Jack pointed out since she appeared to like the more violent objects.

“That’s Buck. The rest of the animals talk like you, but he talks normal,” she explained and they walked inside.

A little while later, they sat at a table and he looked at the burger with trepidation. He hadn’t eaten one since their little jaunt into the Brecon Beacons. Starting on the chips first, he watched Mica open her toy as soon as they sat down before commencing to dump ketchup all over her own pile of chips.

“My Uncle Ianto wanted to take take me here. Last time I saw him, him and my mum were talking,” she spoke, picking up a red chip, “She said no. Then, he tried to leave and she asked him whether he liked boys.”
Rhi hadn’t mentioned that part.

“Mum’s friend saw him at a restaurant with a boy and they were kissing,” she continued and made a face at the kissing. He guessed that she still believed in cooties.

“That would be me, I was the boy he was kissing,” Jack informed her and was surprised that they’d been spotted like that. It was the only time they’d ever kissed in public. Ianto was just beginning to feel more comfortable with their relationship in that way.

“Oh,” she responded and she started kicking the back of the plastic booth. The sound reverberated.

Love the relationship between Jack and Mica, plus the innocence of her telling him what her Mum had said to Ianto!
Really like this series, it is filled with emotions and sadness, but some light is shining through!
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much.

Yes, in the beginning, the dark seems to overshadow the light as I felt it did in CoE, but I'm hoping by the end that the light will overcome the darkness.

Ahaha - I loved G-Force too!

I just read the last four chapters in a row to catch up and I'm glad this was a lighter one after the funeral *sniffle*

I was actually worried about the G-Force element because it was too perfect not to use...but I didn't actually see the movie so I was reading around on the internet, trying to figure out a good gadget and whether to have character names or not...

Luckily, McDonalds was having Ice Age toys which I did see...I really like Buck as you could probably tell.

Thanks!

Aw, little kids can be adorable. I still haven't seen that movie. I think I'll wait until it's on TV or something.

Chips, take-away, torch, it's lovely to see you did your research. :D

Yeah, I haven't seen it either, LOL.

Thank you, I do try although when I was writing my HP stories, I tried to set the language to English (UK) and I forgot to do that with the Torchwood ones.
