EPCOT Turns 30 and TV Stuff

Come read my thoughts on EPCOT's first thirty years:

Okay, TV stuff...

Doctor Who - not saying anything, not ready BUT FYE did have those blind bags of DW characters and I got...WEEPING ANGEL!

The Crimson Petal and The White - I'm going to try and forget this ever existed...

The New Normal - I'm probably not sticking with this, some of it is fun and some is annoying.

Go On - Awful and I'm not even trying that chimp thing; it has Tyler Labine aka kiss of death for tv shows.

Guys with Kids - This was okay.

Bones - This needs to be at a better time. It also seems to lose at my DVR roulette...

Revolution - I tried but me and Dystopia don't usually mix well...I found it unrealistic, similar to Torchwood: Miracle Day.

NBC Thursday - I love everything so far except for Andy who I now want to slap on a regular basis.

How I Met Your Mother - I've watched since the pilot. I had no problems with watching The Avengers. I never thought of her as Robin then. Now I watch the show and think...wait, but you're Maria Hill...

Partners - David Krumholtz, yay! But it was meh

Castle - YAY!

Fox Tuesday Night Comedies - It's becoming Must See TV...

The Neighbors - This is supposedly the worst show on television but I liked it. It's reminiscient of TGIF back in the day and one of the children had a Duffy Bear! I know ABC is a Disney property but this is the first time I've seen Duffy in a fictional setting.

Elementary - I actually enjoyed it but I find myself disassociating it and pretending that he's more of a loosely based character like House than Sherlock himself. It doesn't have the same fun as Moffat's Sherlock where you can see how they based it off the original work. They're completely new here.

Fringe - I'm utterly lost.

Once Upon a Time - SQUEE! Dementors? WTF? Mulan sounds like Natasha Romanoff...it's not a bad thing but... Oh, they're Ringwraiths? WTF? Umm...yeah

The Good Wife - This show has one of the best casts ever and pretty good writing to go with it.

666 Park Avenue - This show could either be tremendously awesome or really, really awful. I'm undecided but I do miss Rachael Taylor's real accent although it appears sometimes.

Ugh, I need Gossip Girl and Arrow...

OUaT! I love this show with a passion! Haven't watched 666 yet, but it's on the DVR as well as Revolution 2 episodes worth. I STILL haven't caught up on DW for this season. The Doctor is patiently waiting as Boardwalk Empire and Hell on Wheels get watched. Fringe... I really like this show, but I haven't watched in in forever. Bones I got kind of out of after 3rd season... not saying it's bad, just too many good shows to watch and have to choose which to watch. Castle is on the same lane as Bones. I like, just lost touch with it. Maybe later I'll do a marathon with them and catch up ;)

Yeah, I heard ABC is purposely trying to work Duffy into "The Neighbors" because Disney is trying really hard to make Duffy "happen." (Because they're trying to compete with Build-a-Bear or something.)

[identity profile] ericadawn16.livejournal.com 2012-10-02 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm...

I'm going to give you this link
http://www.yourhighwayinthesky.com/2011/04/from-the-disney-bear-to-duffy-the-disney-bear/

It's really more complex than what you think. For one thing, Duffy has "happen"ed overseas. He's ENORMOUSLY popular in Japan where he first started as Duffy. Anyway, it's all covered in the article, I have to go for now, ttyl.

Your birthday's in December? So is mine! My birthday's on the 9th, what about you?

YAY! Someone to talk about tv stuff with! My husband has been awful about watching our shows the last year, so I miss dissecting things with somebody.

Doctor Who-- Words fail me for Angels Take Manhattan, but I admit, up until then I was pretty unsatisfied with Series 7. It's not that it has been bad, really, just...I don't particularly care for the 'feel' Moffat and Co are going for this year, and the plots have been pretty darn crap. Asylum of the Daleks, The Power of Three and Angels Take Manhattan all had some serious plot potential that was squandered. I forgave it in Angels because the acting was so stupendous in that episode, but the others...grrrr. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship had some terrific guest stars and that should have carried that episode but...lord, that plot. Same for A Town Called Mercy. AHEM. Anywho, my long winded point is that I love Eleven and I cried like a baby during Angels and I'm going to miss the Ponds but I hope the latter half of the season has some stronger plots.

Bones-- Has not been great this season. Kinda disappointed they so quickly resolved last season's cliffhanger, made the whole thing seem rather pointless. And I'm still not satisfied with the way Bones and Booth got together; it was like the X-Files all over again. You can't ask audiences to wait five, six, seven, etc seasons for two characters to get together and then have it happen OFFSCREEN. And once they DO get together, you can't start sacrificing plot for cuteness. Gah.

Castle-- I became totally obsessed with this show over the summer, and I think it might be the best crime drama/procedurals on the air. Nice balance of long-term arc and story-of-the-week, and great characters and characterizations throughout.

Fox Tuesday Nights-- I LOVE New Girl, it makes me laugh so much, and I think The Mindy Project is delightfully snarky, but I'm not so sure about Ben and Kate yet.

Elementary-- Much better than I thought it was going to be, and I actually find Lucy Liu a very believable Watson. I think their dynamic is interesting, and I didn't find myself comparing it too much to Sherlock, but it isn't as much fun, as you say. I'll definitely keep watching, I'm a sucker for Holmes in any form.

Fringe-- I missed the season premiere, will catch up this week. But I love Fringe, so I should enjoy it.

Once Upon a Time-- This is another show I watched in one big helping over the summer, and OMG, I'm so glad I did. I absolutely love the world that has been created, and all the characters, even the evil ones, are so great. And I found myself totally rooting for Mulan; she's awesome. Aurora, I found a bit annoying, lol.

LOL. That is all, don't mind my rambling nonsense.

Kinda disappointed they so quickly resolved last season's cliffhanger

I do agree with this. *Nods* Hart Hanson & company should have made the season premiere an ep with two separate stories (e.g. Brennan being on the run & the rest of the team trying to solve the case to clear her name) that became one either at the end of the above-described ep or at the beginning of the one we did get as the season premiere. *Nods* That one had a little bit of what I suggested above, but not quite enough, IMO, and apparently yours, as well. The one thing the writers did do right is actually show us the fallout from Brennan taking off with Christine without telling Booth. They've glossed over things like that in the past (e.g. told, usually in an interview before or after the episode has aired, rather than showed), so they get a point for that. *Nods*

I've come to terms with the writers' decision to not actually show us Booth and Brennan becoming a couple, because all the cuteness between them (and following Christine's birth, the increase in it) has more than made up for it, at least for me :]. Just as an example, I actually got misty-eyed during the scene when Parker was showing Booth and Brennan the mobile he made for Christine's crib :}. And really, at least in terms of Brennan unexpectedly becoming pregnant with Booth's child, their get-together, so to speak, has been portrayed pretty realistically. *Nods*

So, how are you?

What tv would you like to discuss this week?

[identity profile] macaparket.livejournal.com 2012-10-02 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still fangirling about Castle, especially after that episode from yesterday! Holy cow! Best episode ever :D

I'm actually just starting to watch Fringe. It started to air here from season one on our national TV (finally something good on there) and I'm loving it so far. Episode 2 is airing tonight and I can't wait to watch it after my Italian class.

[identity profile] ericadawn16.livejournal.com 2013-01-18 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think Castle is turning into a wonderful example of how getting a couple together doesn't have to mean "jumping the shark".

[identity profile] amerally.livejournal.com 2012-10-02 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you still watching the Gina Bellman show? Is it even still on? I've been meaning to give it a go....

[identity profile] theyellowdart85.livejournal.com 2012-10-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I know you weren't talking to me, but if you mean Leverage, then yes, it's still on-- I watch it and love it every season! They just finished airing their summer episodes and new ones should be back later in the year.

[identity profile] amerally.livejournal.com 2012-10-06 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the reply! I loved Gina Bellman in Coupling, and I've been wanting to check out her other work. Maybe I can catch up on Leverage before the new season starts.

[identity profile] ericadawn16.livejournal.com 2013-01-18 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Leverage has ended now but I watched every episode and loved quite a bit of them. It also ended really nicely...and I'm hoping she'll now show up on Sherlock and/or Dr Who.

Heck, she's a Kiwi...a Peter Jackson project would be nice, too.

I can only give my impressions of DW, Bones, and Revolution, since out of everything in your list, those are the only ones I've seen. Now then, here goes :].

Doctor Who
I can sum up my opinion of the first half of the current season with a fave episodes list. In order, they are:

1st- "The Angels Take Manhattan". I thought this ep was the perfect way to say goodbye to Amy & Rory. I never really got attached to either of them, so I didn't cry at all, but there were definitely some very moving, heartbreaking moments/scenes :). *Nods* It also had a good mix of everything that makes the show great— a good story, some great drama, it was creepy/scary (e.g. the Baby Angels & their unceasing giggling. *Shudder*), there were some funny bits, and great performances on the part of all four actors 8).

2nd- "A Town Called Mercy". Great story, and we got to see a much darker side of the Doctor, which I always like :).

3rd- "Asylum Of The Daleks". An interesting take on the Daleks, though not quite as interesting as the one in "Dalek" or, IMO, "Daleks In Manhattan"/"Evolution Of The Daleks". Loved the conversation between Amy & Rory about why Amy, paraphrasing her words, let Rory go. The best thing of all for me though? Jenna-Louise Coleman's Oswin (who I really hope is the character she'll be playing come Christmas) :). She completely stole the show 8)! I took an immediate liking to her the same way I did Donna in "The Runaway Bride" :). *Nods*

4th- "The Power Of Three". This one started out well, but the reveal of the cubes' purpose & how quickly the problem they caused was resolved was completely unsatisfying in comparison to the rest of the ep :[. The biggest highlights for me were the indirect nod to the Brigadier via his daughter & UNIT (and the assistance they gave the Doctor), the return of Brian, and the character development of Amy & Rory.

5th- "Dinosaurs On A Spaceship". Mostly fluff, but good, fun fluff that, unlike "Curse Of The Black Spot", wasn't shamelessly derivative, so I enjoyed the ep much more. My most favorite things were Brian, his & Rory's interaction, the pissy robots, and the little glimpse of the Doctor's dark side we got toward the very end. The character of Solomon was quite good, too.

Bones
I liked last season, Booth/Brennan & Booth/Brennan/Baby Christine cuteness and all, and am enjoying the current season so far (though I missed this week's ep :() 8).

Revolution
I've actually liked what I've seen of this so far. There was quite an interesting twist in this week's ep. It wasn't entirely unexpected, but the details of it most definitely were. *Nods*

There is something magical about Epcott, really, for the environment alone.

I usually like dystopia, but Revolution felt a little heavy handed to me.

I have no problem with Maria Hill knowing Barney Stimpson.

Castle is very good so far.
