“I began to like it and look what I became,” he uttered, “Still, I lived so many lives. It’s time to find another one.”
“But they died and I am sorry, Jack, but you cannot just run away. You cannot run away,” Gwen complained and was crying. If he stayed any longer, he’d start crying, too. Seeing her upset had never sat well with him and with all those hormones in his body, he really needed to leave. He was doing this for the baby.
“Oh, yes, I can, just watch me,” he said, resetting the buttons and punching in the right coordinates. Then, with a tug, he was gone.
Jack landed on a hard metal floor where he sank to his knees from the nausea. It had been awhile since he’d traveled this way and much longer since doing it while pregnant, if ever. He couldn’t remember. Large black boots filled his line of vision before they were replaced by an even larger gun. Being a disintegrator gun, he held up his hands in surrender.
“You were supposed to be food,” hissed the owner of the gun, “I don’t condone stowaways on my ship so you better give me one good reason why I shouldn’t use this on you right now.”
Although appearing human, there was something not right about her form, like she might be a Usurian, but all he could think was that it wasn’t supposed to be like this at all. A cold-fusion cruiser should have been a pleasure craft, not pirates or whatever this crew was.
“I’m pregnant,” he informed her and hated being at her complete mercy. Groans echoed around him from the other members of her crew.
“We don’t need any more mouths to feed,” spat a male human who was missing one of his eyes. A sunken hole was all that remained. The captain lowered her gun for a second before motioning to the Cat Person at her right.
“Phelix, check him. See if he’s even telling the truth,” she ordered and maintained her gun at Jack’s head. Phelix must have been the medic because he took out a large portable scanner and removed an appendage from it; waving it over the former leader of Torchwood’s body.
“Twenty-nine week old fetus like he said,” the medic confirmed and the captain lowered her gun as she glared with yellow eyes.
“My name’s Captain Daisy Hoke,” she spoke, “and what would you like to be called?”
“Captain…,” he started out of habit except that used to be his name. This was a new life and he could be anyone at all. However, he had about three seconds to sort that out.
“Captain Boe Sato,” he answered and she smiled in a way that frightened him before grabbing his collar with one hand.
“Captain…” she sneered and pulled on the fabric so it was beginning to choke him, “You’ll call me Captain and I’ll call you Boe if I’m in a good mood, but I don’t care how far along you are, everyone on this crew does their equal share if they expect to eat.”
He nodded and she grabbed him to a standing position by his shirt.
“Tomi, take him to the lavatory so he can give it a thorough cleaning,” Hoke demanded as she left the transport dock. Tomi was an older man with a cyber leg who left him after about fifteen minutes. Hours later, his stomach was growling, his baby was unhappy with him and he kept falling asleep with scrubber in hand. Then, the door slid open and he snapped awake, rubbing.
“Oh, it’s only me,” said Phelix, “Come on, we haven’t much time.”
He put an orange furred arm around him and helped him up; leading him back to what he presumed was the medical bay.
“I have a bed. You must be exhausted, but I’ll have to wake you up in two hours. This isn’t our scheduled sleeping time,” he said with a frown as Jack hit the thin cot, “I’m going to check on things while you’re out.”
It didn’t even register as he slipped off to sleep where he was troubled by a nightmare. He was trying to chase a dark-haired boy, but he was at home in the Boeshane Peninsula and his belly was even bigger than Gwen’s so that he was waddling as the child darted around with ease. It was almost a relief when he heard Phelix’ voice, trying to wake him up.
“Do you have any food?” he asked the cat person.
“I’m afraid not, but I’ve given you a multi-vitamin shot,” the medic replied, “The captain doesn’t know I have them, but I could spare one every other day or so. I hope for you and your baby’s sake though that we either get that food shipment from her parents or reach a proper planet. Some days, we don’t always get our food ration.”
Jack sighed at how he managed to get into a worse situation than he was in before and remembered what Martha had said.
“Can you check out the baby though? My friend said I should have that done as soon as possible,” he told the other and rubbed his bump.
“I don’t see why, perfectly healthy from what I could see…”
“You already ran a scan while I was sleeping?” asked the former leader of Torchwood and he didn’t even try to mask his disappointment.
“I thought it would be easier, but I don’t have the best equipment for it anyway. I’m just waiting for the day she scavenges these machines for parts,” Phelix told him and picked up a piece of glossy paper, “I did make this for you.”
It looked like an old ultrasound from twenty years ago, back on earth. However, he knew the big white blob was the head.
“Not turned yet, but that’s not so important in a male pregnancy,” said the medic, “I presume you know the gender.”
As it stood, he did not yet he felt somehow like he wasn’t supposed to know yet.
“No, and I don’t want you to tell me either. I’ll find out in good time, but how did you come to such a state?” he asked as he put the photograph behind the green construction paper in his coat pocket.
“Hoke’s family was given this ship as payment for a debt and she heard about an opportunity so she picked up the rest of us on Sto, but when we reached Siralos, the opportunity turned out to be a scam. We followed the guy to San Kaloon when it became apparent that this ship is junk. We can never be sure anymore where we’re going to end up when we travel and all our supplies are low,” Phelix spoke and headed towards the hallway, “We should leave before she suspects something. No one is talk badly of her. She killed the last one. Then, she claimed it was good and meant there was more food for the rest of us.”
Jack caressed his belly as he followed after him. In any other circumstance, he’d make a plan to overthrow her as captain, but he couldn’t bear for anything to happen to the baby. There had to be another way.
“Take me to the ship’s computer,” he told the medic who shook his head.
“That’s not a good idea,” he argued and his whiskers drooped.
“I’m good with machines, really good,” the former leader of Torchwood contested back because if he could fix a TARDIS, he could do anything.
“Then, find your own way there. I’ll have no part in it,” Phelix spoke and tried to smooth his orange fur.
