Buffy's Birthday
Jan. 20th, 2011 02:27 amIt was yesterday. Yes, it was. I know this because in 9th grade, we had Monday, January 19th, 1998 off for MLK day and Tuesday, January 20th, 1998 off for Teacher Planning day and they happened to coincide with the WB's BUFFY TWO NIGHT EVENT!!!
Yes, it absolutely had all-caps. It was a TWO NIGHT EVENT! No longer was Buffy relegated to Mondays after Seventh Heaven, it was going to kick off a brand new night for the network: Tuesday! They had ads every five minutes in case we could forget and a countdown to the series premiere of Dawson's Creek which I didn't want to like at first because WB was slamming it down our throats but dammit...he had a freaking Jurassic Park poster in his bedroom! How could I resist that?
Anyway, Buffy had her 17th birthday on January 19th, 1998 which is when she slept with Angel and things were...bad...but oh so fun to watch...but bad for the characters, definitely bad.
I didn't think anyone cared anymore. Happily, I was wrong.
Buffy's 30th birthday celebration!

However, DO NOT READ if you're not caught up with the comic season 8. I was ignoring/repressing an event from the last issue but it was confirmed in this article and I was pissed/sad about it all over it again.
In other news, if this is what Jane Espenson feels about Gwen, we might end up having our best Gwen episodes ever. *fingers crossed*
Espenson sees characters like "Battlestar Gallactica's" (a sci-fi television show for which she also wrote) Boomer and Starbuck as homages to "Buffy," as well as "Torchwood's" Gwen Cooper.
PS I found the article from James Moran's Twitter.

I have to admit I was a big fan of the show but never really followed the comics. Have you read the comics or just heard about certain bits? I'd love to know a little more context about well both of the big spoilers.

Date: 2011-01-20 07:42 pm (UTC)The latest issue hadn't come out when I picked up my comics this week, so I'll have to wait again until Feb to see what else happens.
Still got like 3 Angels, Spikes, and Illyrias to read though.

Date: 2011-01-24 02:56 am (UTC)However, the Twilight the vampire franchise does exist in the comic universe because it's success made MTV give Harmony her own show. She was even a guest on The Colbert Report.
Anyway, then an issue or two ago, apparently Twilight turns out to be Angel? Then, they have naked alternate universe sex...several times...before Buffy realizes she has to come back and save everyone from all the other horrible stuff going on: demons, vampires, etc. Angel comes back with her except he's acting all weird and then, in the midst of battle, a guy gets killed but with the shoddy drawing in that panel, I thought...nameless person, right? Maybe Andrew? But no, they to go and confirm it's Giles, grr
However, Wiki puts things a little better:
While Super Buffy is fighting side by side with Spike in Sunnydale, Angel is on the other side of the world fighting demons of his own. As Twilight he was given a clear mission in regard to Buffy--help her reach the next plane, together create a new world, and end all suffering. But Buffy doesn't play by the rules, and this "higher plane" and a lifetime of happiness with Angel wasn't gonna cut it--not if she had to sacrifice her family to keep it. And now Angel has to answer for his failings as Twilight--willingly or not. Back in Sunnydale everyone is fighting for their lives against a horde of demons, and someone close to Buffy joins forces with a villain from the past to strive for a common goal--protect the seed.
Maybe it'll be collected in graphic novel form soon, that's how I caught up with the Angel comics. At least, they didn't kill off Oz...yet.

2. Harmonic Divergence -Based on the popularity of Twilight and reality tv shows, MTV gives Harmony her own show. The new celebrity is even interviewed by Stephen Colbert.
Lesbian? No. She slept with a Japanese slayer. They had a nice night but that was basically it and 22 issues later, she's back to having sex with Angel.
The Giles thing...I'm still in denial.

Date: 2011-01-25 04:11 pm (UTC)Now I'm torn between trying to track these down or living in denial.
I knew of the Buffy comics, but I never knew there was an Angel one (or any of the others.) I'll have to check out the Angel one if for no other reason than just to see if the people who looked like they were goners in the tv finale actually were.
Thanks.
