Killer Joe
Dec. 9th, 2012 08:22 pmFor Labor Day, Disney re-released The Avengers so we started looking for malls and/or other films that we could pair it with. We discovered this movie we'd never heard of called Killer Joe. It stars Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hirsch, was described as a very dark comedy and rated NC-17. We were intrigued. We'd never gone to a NC-17 before. She didn't believe me that they would card her but they totally did.
I wasn't sure what to think of Killer Joe from a female perspective. There's a lot of misogyny going on but then, I was forced to realize how basically everyone in it was an asshole. I think there's a special name for that but I can't think of it. The ending also almost turned it into a movie about a young woman finally achieving female empowerment over the men manipulating her life. Juno Temple was AWESOME. It turns out she was Selina's roommate in Dark Knight Rises. She's definitely one to watch in the future.
Okay, I used to think of Matthew McConaughey as being like Vince Vaughn...doesn't really act, he's just himself in every role but with the last two films I've seen, McConaughey has totally changed my mind. Under different circumstances, he would have been mentioned at awards time. He was AMAZING. Ooh, it turns out he is up for an Independent Spirit Award.
However, it is NC-17 for good reasons; lots of violence, sex and nudity of all sorts.
