Baby Names
Sep. 26th, 2017 01:06 amIt turns out I'm not as progressive as I thought I was.
I love baby names. I love old ones, new ones, even weird ones but...
I'm always kind of disappointed at gender neutral. I feel like I shouldn't be. Gender neutral is what we should want from babies, right?
But most of the time, it's not like the parents are aiming for gender neutral. They're still having gender finding out parties. They're still dressing them in pink or blue.
There are two things I'll remember from every single first day of school.
1. Your name will invariably be messed up...even mine was a few times.
2. Teachers immediately have a guess at your gender by your name and if it's off, you can see it in the teacher's face. Sometimes, they'll flat out admit it, "Oh, you're a girl!"
Names and preconceptions behind them are important. Just check out the Curtis comic that explained how his parents made sure Curtis had a "white" name so nobody would think he was black until they actually met him.
But am I judging the world too harshly by my experiences? Am I no better than the Moclan for assuming how their life will play out with that name?
