Day 27 - Something epic

Well, you see as much as Orlando and Johnny were hot in Curse of the Black Pearl, by the time we were on our second viewing, my mom and I had moved onto another actor we had never seen before:

Jack Davenport

As with all loves, it wasn't obvious to us but it should have been. We discussed after our first viewing how sorry we felt for him that something couldn't have worked out, how maybe someone new would move into town and catch his eye instead...how very handsome he appeared although you couldn't see as much of him because of the uniform.

I wanted more. I consulted IMDB and my local tv guide. It turned out the local PBS station was showing something called "Coupling" on Saturday nights. I tuned in...

and was disappointed. It was some guy who was stupid enough to claim he had a wooden leg. Jack Davenport looked very, very different. I was a bit meh about the whole thing so I forgot about it and went back to college. Then, NBC came out with an American version.

HORRIBLE

I decided to give the original one more chance. It was hilarious. I didn't know what I was thinking last time. Jack had this awesome scene where he's getting turned on under the table in a very public setting. Within two weeks, I had rented season one from Hollywood Video and then purchased the first two seasons online.

I also told my mom about it but that I wasn't sure it was her kind of show. She watched anyway and loved it. The timing was bad on PBS especially since they would have pledge drives that would mean that part two would air a month later. Thanks to my dvds, Coupling is the only television series, other than possibly I Love Lucy, where she has seen every episode twice. At one point, she even said she didn't want me watching Coupling without her.

I fell hard for Steven Moffat and his writing. Then, I heard they were bringing back Doctor Who and Steven was involved which meant my excitement level was verging on times a thousand. I wasn't sure about the reboot at first, farting aliens, but I kept watching because everyone overseas said Moffat's two-parter was MUST SEE! It was and got me hooked completely. It was somewhere between Jack hitting on everything in sight and the creepy child being the first thing to scare me on tv since the Gentlemen and the Doctor dancing with Rose that I fell in love with the reboot especially Nine.

It doesn't hurt my amusement factor that Steven's episodes have featured a Captain Jack AND a Sally Sparrow. Anyway, my epic thought here is that my love of Doctor Who turned into obsession because of Steven Moffat who I wouldn't have known if it weren't for Jack Davenport who I only discovered because he played this awesome character, James Norrington, in Curse of the Black Pearl back in July 2003. Jack Davenport really needs to be on Doctor Who one of these days.

Here's one of the many Doctor Who references Steven inserted into the series and one of Jack Davenport's finest scenes:

*g* one of Steve's glorious rants! The other two I absolutely adore: Lesbian Spank Inferno (the dinner party) ---I think that was 2nd season. And in the 3rd, another dinner party---the Bathroom Door Lock Dilemma.

One of the most fun things Elessil ever did was to write one of Steve's insane rants for Norrington in our Fix-it fic, "Never Say Die". (about the amount of rum on their little ship---no food, no crew but LOTS of booze---James was in fine form! *giggle*)

My initial reaction to Coupling was the same as yours. I really didn't like it and I never went back to it at all after watching the first three episodes. Though I must confess watching that clip is making me contemplate giving it another chance. That segment was funnier than anything in the episodes I saw. And there are more DW refs throughout the series, you say? Hmm, maybe I will have to have another look some time.

Jack Davenport really needs to be on Doctor Who one of these days.

Why stop at just being on the show? Jack Davenport needs to BE Doctor Who!! I was so hoping for that as soon as I heard that Moffat was taking over. *keeps fingers crossed that Jack might yet end up being Twelve or Thirteen*

If you like stuff like Being Human, than check out Ultraviolet (not the awful Mila Jovovich movie) but TV show that inspired Being Human. I checked it out because of Being Human writer`s recommendation, True Blood`s Stephen Moyer and because it is considered the best thing about vampires ever among fans of the genre. It`s really amazing and groundbreaking and when you see it you`ll realize how many movies and shows lifted stuff from it. It`s a cult classic. Anyway, I am mentioning it because Davenport is in it too since you are looking for his stuff.

Oh no, Lesbian Spank Inferno was the third episode ever...I remember whenever I'd see a new episode and they'd start talking dinner party, I'd squee and get so excited! Don't forget the fourth season and the Susan song! lol

You know, Amy and Rory should do a dinner party one of these days, it'd be EPIC!

Fourth season even has Buffy references and I love spotting things from Coupling in DW, like an obsession with crayons and what you can do with them. You should try it again.

Jack would be awesome as 12 or 13! Can't you just picture him with River?

I also want Gina Bellman to make an appearance and she's already said before, more than once, that she really wants to, too.

You've seen Jekyll, right?

LOL

Yeah, Toby is usually correct with his recommendations. There's been one or two things I didn't agree with.

Anyway, when I mentioned looking for Jack's stuff, I was talking about 2003. I've seen basically everything you can now. When we went to The Libertine, my mom and I were more excited about him, Richard Coyle and Tom Hollander than Johnny Depp.

Yes, I have seen Ultraviolet. I was annoyed when the new thing came out that had nothing to do with it. Also, I have a friend who prefers Ultraviolet over Coupling.

I`m with your friend. Horror trumps comedy any time any day for me. Ultraviolet is a masterpiece. Coupling not so much. Friends knock off only very racy.

The best thing about Davenpoert is his scandalous family. It`s generations upon generations of scandal that Kardashians and Hiltons dream of. They would make a great soap opera or a great trashy book. :)

Yes, I suppose I should have another go eventually...

He would be fantastic! Most definitely. And no, sorry but I don't want to think about him being with River. That would be the only drawback if he became the Doctor.

I have not seen Jekyll. Should I? I've heard of it. Is it worth a watch?

You HAVEN"T seen Jekyll?

It's so awesome. I mean I was worried at first because I don't typically like Jekyll and Hyde stories but this is written by Steven Moffat and starring James Nesbitt, Gina Bellman and in a supporting role Denis Lawson aka Wedge Antilles! I really liked the modern twists.

Here's the trailer:

Oh, I forgot it also has Michelle Ryan who was in Planet of the Dead.
