Matheson

Jack had the unnerving impression that Rex Matheson knew all about him and he didn't know a thing about him.

"CIA then?" Jack asked since he didn't quite come off like FBI.

"Yep, it's a sort of family tradition. My dad was with the Bureau," Rex answered, studying Jack. "What about your parents, Jack?"

He ignored him for a moment. They were passing people skating outside. It was so sunny in California. He almost wanted to check to see if his sunglasses had slipped, but he knew they hadn't. He just wasn't used to the brightness. It reminded him of his childhood and he looked towards the driver's seat. Gwen had insisted on driving even though she had no experience over here. Jack agreed so he could get something out of Rex. However, that was easier said than done.

"They're around," Jack answered at the previous question. After all, they wouldn't even be born for another three thousand years or so.

"I loved my parents. My dad even got Nixon to write me a letter of recommendation for college, said he owed him from way back," Rex said with a grin. "Harvard was pretty impressed with that."

"We're here...I think," Gwen announced and slowed the car into a stop. While she parked, Jack studied the situation. Something felt wrong. Rex must have felt it, too. His hand hovered over his gun. Jack snuck out of the car and crouched behind it, looking for the threat. It could be anyone and the call hadn't been any help. He took out his gun when he heard Rex scream, "Gwen, down!"

Then, there was a gunshot and he couldn't see Rex anymore.

***************************

Jack hadn't gone with Rex in the ambulance. The area hadn't been secure so it was another hour or two before he made his way to the hospital. Then, he wasn't sure he had the right room. An old man with a dark ball cap stood just inside. He took it off as Jack entered and had the trace of a smirk.

"Captain Jack Harkness, I'm guessing," the man said and Jack wondered if he was supposed to know him.

"My reputation precedes me," he said with a grin, hoping for a hint.

"Oh, I've read your FBI file," the man spoke and Jack felt like an idiot. He'd allowed himself to judge the situation by twentieth century standards when he was from the 51st and they were in the twenty-first. Despite the difference of skin color, this was Rex' dad. Rex' dad looked at his son a moment before closing the door to the hallway. It was a private room.

"We have a mutual acquaintance," he said and met Jack's blue eyes with his brown ones. It was that tone people used about the Doctor, but...

"Tweed jacket, bowtie, has an annoying tendency to be right," he elaborated and Jack couldn't help smiling: that was the Doctor, definitely.

"When'd you meet him?" Jack asked and the other seemed lost in a pleasant memory for a moment.

"1969, nearly died, nearly destroyed Apollo 11 but when I got home, Matt was there with open arms and he could tell..." he paused. His lips turned upward in a smile. "He could tell I'd been traveling and not conventionally which led him to admit to a few things. Turns out, he wasn't undercover with the military like he'd told me. In fact, he wasn't from around here. That vortex manipulator on your wrist is very similar to his."

Jack was taken aback. Another Time Agent?

"It made us stronger and we were able to have things no one else could for that point in time. They made me choose, the FBI did. It was either them or Matt. I couldn't have both. I chose Matt but we couldn't marry," he explained and grinned again. "Well, we couldn't marry here, we went to his hometown and did it there. I called him my husband after that. My real friends understood."
Jack was even more intrigued.

"What was the other thing?" he asked. The old man appeared to ignore him, moving closer to Rex' bedside. Rex' breathing was regular and his machines chirped in regular contentment.

"You can't tell at the moment, but Matt always said his eyes took after mine and his head because it's big like mine," he said with a chuckle. "I always thought he looked the most like Matt."

Considering Matt had been a time agent, his meaning was unmistakable.

"Does Rex know?"

"No, no," he said, shaking his head. "How could we have ever explained it to him? I have a hard time believing it at times and I was there. We went to the future for the birth. It's all normal then, but we came back and we had to say we adopted Matt's nephew. He always called us his parents though."

"You could have stayed," Jack suggested.

"In the future? No, it'd be like cheating or something," he said shaking his head again. "Besides, we'd fought too hard for the present."

There was a story or two left unsaid. Jack had a feeling they were the ones involving the Doctor.

"I should be going, Canton Delaware the Third, by the way," he said and stuck out a hand. Jack took it. Then, he let go and put the cap back on.

"Don't you want to wait with Rex?" Jack asked since his son had been shot in the chest.

"No, the way I understand it, no one's been able to die in days but even if that wasn't the case, my son's strong, always has been. He'll be right as rain in no time," Canton replied and opened the door.

Jack couldn't resist one last question.

"If you're Canton Delaware the Third, how does he end up being Rex?"

Canton smiled again and replied, "Oh Jack, what makes you think Rex is his real name?"

AWW MAN.

You timey-wimey'd! \O/ Brilliant! It's a big time knot.

I love the detail about Jack being unused to the brightness, too. That's really really nice and placed me there. :)
