I ended up seeing it again with a friend tonight and I'm so glad I was able to see this one with her and her husband. The very first time I ever went to a Harry Potter film, she was with me. In fact, we had just met three months before for the very first time when we both started college at UT.
It's so hard to believe that was nearly ten years ago...crazy...
So, my continuing thoughts aka Was that shot really necessary?
Oh, don't pretend you didn't notice, how could you not notice the way they made sure the camera angle got a good clear, shot of Hermione's cleavage so you could practically look right down her dress?
Anyway, I still worry about the dragon. Those wounds were very nasty. He'd spent decades being abused and neglected. His wings looked horrible. I'm surprised they could fly and I'm not sure if there's a dragon equivalent of the ASPCA...
Hopefully, Hermione mentions it to Charlie...
We had a much better crowd tonight. When Ariana was walking back in the painting and they were all, Who's that?
Several voices could be heard in the audience murmuring, Neville!
Way to totally ditch almost all of Albus' complexity! Yeah, let's not even get into how he had to defeat his only love or how he may have accidentally killed his own sister...
Grr
Honestly, Albus and Gellert were basically like Erik/Charles except for being accepted canon by the author herself...why isn't there more slash fic?
There was a lot more humor in this one, it was nice. Was Colin Creevey the one that used the radio? However, they did make a point of showing how he survived the battle...still, I thought he looked similar enough...
I liked the meeting where Snape said his thing about anyone helping Harry...gotta love that irony...but it makes me cringe every time when Harry gets upset with him in front of everyone and how he killed Dumbledore and...
I wonder how he thought about it later...
McGonagall is extra awesome. I really think this was all part of Snape's plan. He knew she would be more than capable of taking over the Headmaster duties so he was expecting something like this to happen so he could turn things over without arousing suspicion. Obviously, he can't be an adequate Headmaster while making sure Harry has what he needs...Neville said as much when he said they never actually saw Snape that much.
I liked how the battle with McGonagall was virtually a retread of the battle with Harry in HbP, McGonagall does spell after spell and all Snape does is block.
When I watch it again tomorrow, I want to pay extra attention to the how the Carrows get knocked out. I didn't even notice them until tonight.
Did Tonks even get dialogue in this one? I think even Bellatrix had like...one line?
I loved McGonagall bringing the statues to life like her chess board from the first and also from the first, they mentioned Seamus' ability to blow things up. Was that Devil's Snare in the Room of Requirement? And I assumed they'd be Droxies but the creatures were more pixies?
I also loved the explanation of Parseltongue... "Harry talks in his sleep, have you noticed?" Then, the way Hermione claims not to have noticed...she's not a good liar.
Kelly Macdonald is always fun. She was the Grey Lady and will also be the princess in Brave. I liked that they at least tried to have all the professors even if they only got like one line, too. Filch was quite the scene-stealer this time especially when he was trying to sweep up at the end...poor guy.
The problem with destroying the diadem is that I know what's coming soon. As soon as Voldemort says to fetch Severus, it's like, NOOO, don't do it!
It's nice getting to see the boathouse, but damn...
The first time I saw it, everyone gasped when Nagini attacked. The second time there was one lone giggle that was quickly silenced by how brutal the attack is. She just bites him again and again...
(shudders)
As soon as Harry and the rest of the trio watch Snape die, I started crying and didn't stop until Neville's speech about people not dying in vain. Tonight, I was better although I still totally teared up over Fred, Tonks and Lupin. we'll see about tomorrow.
It was practically perfect. It had everything important and more...Severus cradling Lily's dead body as Harry cries? Damn...
It would have been nice to have the best friend part, it seems a little more one-sided here. Still, aren't they CUTE?

Okay, here's where movie and book canon get a little Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey...
Lily and James Potter died sometime in the evening of October 31, 1981. Baby Harry was delivered to Petunia Dursley about 24 hours later although he wasn't found until the morning of November 2nd...obviously, it was a magic basket that wouldn't let Harry suffer exposure or anything else from being left outside for eight hours or so...
So, there are 24 hours where Harry is basically unaccounted for...
In book canon, we're almost led to believe that the Potters are killed, news gets out, Albus tells Hagrid to get Harry, Hagrid meets Sirius who offers to take responsibility for Harry, Hagrid refuses and that afternoon Sirius Black supposedly kills Peter Pettigrew. It surely doesn't take 12 hours to fly from Godric's Hollow to Little Whinging and it makes more sense for Hagrid to be flying at night anyway so...where was Harry during those twelve hours? Hanging out at Hagrid's Hut?
In movie canon, we are told that Snape found out or realized fairly shortly late on October 31 or very early November 1st that something was horribly wrong. He arrives at Godric's Hollow and seems to be the first person on the scene. Then, after sobbing over Lily's corpse, he...leaves Harry alone with his dead parents and reports back to Albus who then sends Hagrid thus preserving book canon? Or had movie canon changed events that Snape brings Harry to Albus who then entrusts him in Hagrid's care while he investigates and sets things up, like having Arabella Figg move into the neighborhood?
Either way, I want a fic where Snape takes baby Harry to Hogwarts...
Maybe I'll write it myself...
Now, I know a lot of people are complaining about the "ET" moment in the forest but Sirius has already been set up as a sappy, sentimental softy in his slightly older age. Care to recall Prisoner of Azkaban?
It's cruel that I got to spend so much time with James and Lily, and you so little. But know this; the ones that love us never really leave us. And you can always find them in here.
Then, he pointed at Harry's heart, just like here.
Ugh, they better not kill off Comissioner Gordon for real in the next Batman film...
Anyway, I've always loved Hagrid carrying Harry, just like he did as a baby.
However, what was not so cool was the Draco doesn't want to come but his mom guilts him into coming. Then, he has that awkward hug with Voldemort and it feels like some dysfunctional family Christmas...
Narcissa: Draco, you come hug your great uncle!
Draco: But I don't like him and he smells and I think he might be a little bit of a pedophile...
Narcissa: This might be his last Christmas! It won't kill you...I promise.
(Draco reluctantly comes forward and is forced into a one-sided hug with Voldemort.)
Voldemort: If I didn't know better, it would almost seem like you didn't like me but how could that be? How could anyone not like me? I'm Lord FUCKING Voldemort, bitch!
(Draco cringes as Voldemort hugs him harder.)
Then, he totally ignores his dad as he and his mum skip away. I suppose it was supposed to be running over uneven ground but it totally looked like skipping and Lucius had to run after them like an unwanted puppy.
Neville is bad-ass and I love that, but what was the point of the Harry/Voldemort midair coupling or whatever? It seemed to have no purpose except the producers saying, But it'll look freaking AWESOME in 3D! We need cool 3D stuff to justify it!
I kept expecting...and now's the moment where you tell him how his most loyal, trust servant had been on your side all along? "He was never your man?"
Right? Right?
(Voldemort dies)
Oh, guess not... (pouty face) I'll assume that there was public declaration later, at the very least when the press revealed Albus Severus' name or possibly when Harry made sure Severus had a portrait done...
I didn't have a problem with the whole flaky death. I thought it was a nice throwback to the cracking that Quirrel did in the first film.
Okay, here is another nitpick...You were supposed to fix your wand FIRST! Then, you can destroy the Elder Wand or whatever.
Harry: But I have a wand and I like it, Draco's.
Fangirls: But don't you remember your first wand that Ollivander gave you and how much you loved it?
Harry: yes, but I like this one...
Fangirls: Is this because you secretly like Draco but don't want to admit it?
Harry: What? How- I don't know what you're talking about, it's obviously supposed to symbolize how me and Slytherins cans now be BFFS all because the Former Head of Slytherin house who just died totally loved my mum!
Fangirls: But what about how McGonagall banished everyone to the basement as though none of them were capable of any goodness or school pride?
Harry: That was BEFORE he died, totally different.
Fangirls: Uh...right...
I had no problems with the aging and stuff with the epilogue. Then again, I liked the epilogue in the book...
Yeah, the make-up wasn't Oscar caliber but it was enough that you could tell time had passed and your imagination could do the rest...although honestly, Harry and Ron remind me a lot of my brothers who are 37 and 38.
I looked for goatee man and I did see one with an Owl that I suppose could be Teddy? Eh, still annoyed by that...
The Neville/Luna shipper in me is very conflicted. Rowling undid it in book canon. They marry other people but movie canon has Neville being all, "I think I'm in love with her. I think I should tell her right now. We might be dead in the morning."
So just as I consigned myself to the fact that it doesn't happen, movie canon says it does so do I assume they're the same canon and they break up eventually or movie canon just differs that greatly?
Hmm...
Also, with initials like ASP, that kid's destined to be a Slytherin...
In conclusion, I think this is the best adaptation of the films regardless...
It's so hard to believe that was nearly ten years ago...crazy...

Date: 2011-07-18 08:18 am (UTC)Not that I'm complaining, just making an observation.
Overall, I must agree it was a fabulous film.

Date: 2011-07-18 08:26 am (UTC)I understand why they left Dumbledore's backstory out though. Hard to fit that in there because where do you put it? It would have slowed the movie down too much and it wasn't completely necessary for the main plot.
The audience at the showing I went to was absolutely brilliant because we were all mega fans since it was at midnight. Lots of cheering during certain parts like when Neville kills Nagini, when Ron and Hermione kiss, when Voldemort dies, etc.
I'm not sure what the audience will be like during my next visit. Probably will be a bunch of repeat offenders like myself, I imagine. LOL
I got impatient and d/l'd a bootleg of the movie until I can go to the theater again later this week. This way I have something to watch at home between theater visits and until the DVD comes out. It's kind of crap quality but that's to be expected. I just needed something to give me my fix temporarily. LOL
ETA: I agree that this is the best adaptation out of all of them. Between parts 1 and 2, I think they did an amazing job with editing things down to get the events to fit into two movies. I think they made some great editorial decisions and even if there are a few things that I would have liked to see, I think the story isn't affected by leaving them out (which is probably why they were left out) and I think they got the most important stuff in there.
It's well-acted by everyone (even Emma Watson's acting is tolerable and I always have issues with her) and they really translated the emotional impact of the books into a movie format very well. er, if that makes any sense. I'm not saying it very clearly. lol It's late.
ETA2: I also noticed the boob shot! It's distracting! LOL

Date: 2011-07-18 02:20 pm (UTC)Sorta want to see fic of Severus just sitting on the floor rocking the child after sending a patronus waiting for word from Dumbledore on what to do. Then laying a sleeping, comforted Harry onto the a clear spot in the rubble just as he hears Hagrid's voice and disillusions himself. Struggling against himself when Sirius appears considering killing the man but waiting and when Hagrid still takes Harry just walking away because there had already been too much death that night.

Date: 2011-07-18 06:47 pm (UTC)I just took it as Hermione getting equal time.
I thought the 180 shot of Dan and Rupert taking off their shirts was alot more gratuitous. Total Twilight moment.
Of course, they only showed Rupert's big shoulders and back because I guess his chest is not as hot as Dan's.
Anyway, I still worry about the dragon.
Now, see, I've always thought that the dragon was Norbert.
That's why it flew toward Hogwarts. In the movie it was getting lower to the ground as it approached the school, which would make since if it's flying for Hagrid.
I know in "fantastic beasts" Norwegian Ridgebacks are supposed to be black and poisonous, not fire-breathers. But in the first movie Norbert was a blueish (though darker) color and a fire-breather. If he hasn't seen the sun in so many years, he would be a paler color. Either way, I you shouldn't worry about him. I think he landed in the Forbidden Forest and Hagrid will certainly help him out, whether he's Norbert or not. :)
ant to pay extra attention to the how the Carrows get knocked out.
It was Minerva. Snape blocked the blow. But the residual got the Carrows.
Then, after sobbing over Lily's corpse, he...leaves Harry alone with his dead parents
I think he did leave Harry.
Movie cannon says:
1. that when Snape went to Dumbledore after Lily died, he doesn't think Harry is in any danger because Voldie's dead.
2. Hagrid is the one that gets him from the house.
but more importantly
Book cannon says that:
1. When Snape met Dumbles to beg him to save Lily, he had no problem with Voldie killing Harry and James, as long as Lily was safe.
2. Even after knowing Harry for 7 years, when he found the picture in Sirius' room he purposely tore off the half with James and Harry and dropped it on the floor. After all that time, he still could not deal with it.
I totally want to read your fic where he does take him, though.:)
I know a lot of people are complaining about the "ET" moment
Even in the book, I thought of this scene as DH's version of the ultra sappy scene in HBP when Tonks declares her love for Lupin. But this one has to be in the movie to establish the location of the Resurrection Stone...
Rowling undid it in book canon. They marry other people
But she really didn't...
It's not pure book canon. It's what she "said" after DH was published. Just like the portrait of Snape is not pure book canon. She also said a little bit later that she was surprised at how many people assumed Neville and Luna were going to be together and how let down they were when she said, Neville married Hannah. I think she got a chance to fix a few things in the movie, that weren't perfect in the book.
I'm also one of those people who think there will be more books in about 7-10 years. I'm gonna talk about that more in my review.
o, with initials like ASP, that kid's destined to be a Slytherin... AHahahahahaha! ROFL! I didn't notice that before. Thanks!

Not exactly baby Harry and it´s quite AU now -the fic is from umm 2005/2006?- dunno but it was written before the HBP book came out.
It´s called MINE by Gillian (http://www.corplink.com.au/~gillianm/Harry_Potter_Stories.htm) and it´s so sweet and nicely written,I love that fic...
By the way,I loooove that Lily/Severus pic, too. *sigh*
And yes,I still haven´t seen DH2...
*arghhh*

Date: 2011-07-20 12:47 am (UTC)And you are TOTALLY right about the stupid Harry-Voldemort-face-meld being for 3D. Can't believe I didn't think of that reason. It had been boggling my mind about how something so stupid could get into the movie.
And LOL about all the Slytherins being ordered into the dungeon. My friend: "But what if some of them are good...?" Me: "Naaaah."
And omg, the Malfoy/Voldy christmas dialogue of yours was hilarious. xD
As for who found Harry, I was kinda wondering that too. Maybe we could assume Snape came and was crying over Lily, and then he heard someone else's approach (Hagrid's) and then ran away so as to not be discovered in his moment of sorrow.

Date: 2011-07-31 04:45 am (UTC)If that was Norbert, I'd just cry so hard because it's disgusting how mistreated that dragon was and to think him, well, technically, she's a her now...well, that's just utterly depressing. Now I don't know about the growth span of dragons but that dragon just seemed a whole lot older.
I LOVED the scene where Tonks declares her love for Lupin! It almost made up for all the moping and everything that had come before it. Naturally, it wasn't in the film.
I hadn't thought of the movie as a way to "fix" things.
So, are you going to have that review that's more than four sentence fragments long where you explain about having more books?
Although I'm still waiting on Hogwarts, A History...we were promised...

Date: 2011-08-01 04:32 am (UTC)Hmmm...I reread my entry and apparently I had a break down between my train of thought and what I actually wrote.
What I was trying to say, but said badly, was that they made sure we all got a good/overt view of Dan's chest, but only showed Rupert's back and shoulders (his best assets).
So, are you going to have that review that's more than four sentence fragments long where you explain about having more books?
No.
No, I'm not.
1. Because everything has been said already.
2. I'd be posting it for myself to read. I already know what I think.
3. It would give away big plot points on the dojinishis I'm working on. That would be no fun for anyone.
I'm still waiting on Hogwarts, A History...we were promised...
I'd look for a small section to first be released on Pottermore as a way to draw traffic over there. Then, a Christmas book release (print and digital). Proceeds for charities, of course. The question is when.
