Favorite Character
"Same story again?" Jack asked as Ianto came out of their daughter's room.
"It's her favorite. She never gets tired of it," Ianto spoke. "Tonight, she said her favorite character was the dragon Myfanwy."
"I heard that," Jack confirmed and put his arms around him. "My favorite character was always the prince from London."
"Not the local prince?" Ianto teased and Jack kissed him. However, Ianto stopped it. Jack was fairly certain he knew what was coming.
"Did you get checked out like I told you to?" Ianto asked with concern in his blue eyes as though Jack could actually get an illness. If he was honest, Jack had been avoiding this very conversation all day since he wasn't sure how to say it or how Ianto would take it. He couldn't help glancing back at Sarah Jane's room.
"Yeah, of course I did," Jack confirmed and started walking to their bedroom.
"And?" Ianto asked. There were so many words and so many phrases forming in Jack's mind. He went for the simplest.
"Same as last time," Jack said after a pause. He waited for Ianto to catch up, knowing it wouldn't take long.
"But last time you were that sick, you were pregnant with Sarah Jane," Ianto explained and he was absolutely right. Jack turned back to face him.
"Yeah," he confirmed.
"Wha-?" Ianto started to ask before mouthing the words, 'Really?'
Jack nodded and Ianto hurried to him, throwing his arms around him.
"I mean, Sarah Jane's been asking but we hadn't discussed it in a while and last time we thought it wouldn't be a good idea..." Jack rambled but paused for a moment before adding, "I wasn't sure how you would..."
"Are you happy?" Do you want this?" Ianto asked with a hand on Jack's cheek. Jack was feeling so many things. It wouldn't be easy but they had more members of the team this time. Still, nine months was a lot of work but then, he thought of Sarah Jane in her bed and how it was worth it.
"Yes," Jack answered and saw his husband's face lit up. "You're going to be a daddy again."
Jack ran his hand through Ianto's hair. Some of the edges were prematurely grey. They liked to joke it was Sarah Jane's fault but he knew it was Torchwood. Still, Ianto refused to color it, saying he'd earned it through hard work.
"How far gone are you then?" Ianto asked.
"Nine weeks," Jack told him with a smile.
"January," Ianto said and seemed to have another idea. He put his face close to Jack's stomach and continued, "Don't come out around Christmas because Christmas babies never get as many birthday gifts as other kids do."
Jack laughed.
"When should we start telling everyone?" Ianto asked.
"We should wait a week or so to get used to the idea ourselves..."
"Explain things to Sarah Jane," Ianto interrupted, laying his hand on Jack's stomach.
"You could create a new bedtime story," Jack suggested and Ianto smiled.
