Jack's mind wandered in the time just after waking up.
"I'm sorry," he had apologized as they had left for London and he had been too much of a coward to see Ianto's expression. The other man had just finished calling Gwen and Rhi on the mobile.
"Me, too," his lover had agreed and he had assumed it was about what Jack had done, the situation they were in...but what if it wasn't? What if Ianto meant he was sorry about what was going to happen? Did he know? Was Rhi right? He sighed and forced himself out of the cot. It had been five days since he asked Phelix his request with no opportunities. Instead, he was forced to do menial labor until his feet swelled to the point that he had to cut his boots off, his back always ached and the medic was giving up part of his rations so Jack could eat on the days when no food was given out. Then, he saw Tomi working with the wires on the bridge instead of the Captain. He hurried over although his gait was becoming more of a waddle and crouched down as best he could.
“If only we had a temporal lifter,” he muttered, looking at the innards.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” demanded the Captain and her form was oscillating between human and the seaweed of her true self.
“I can fix it,” Jack said in a calm manner.
“Like hell you will. Who let this man in here?” she spat and slapped him so hard across the face that he fell over, “How do I know you’re not further sabotaging my ship? Did someone pay you? You thought you could earn a little something before the little vomit monster was born?”
Hoke kicked him hard just seconds after he covered his bump.
“I want you to move everything in the storage to the opposite wall,” she ordered as the bloke with only one eye appeared.
“I found this with the medic’s things,” he announced, holding up a handful of items, like small circuit-boards and miter gears, “I think we’ll be able to try again tomorrow.”
“That’s excellent news, Randeh,” she said with a smile before looking back down at Jack, “Now, scoot, those fuel canisters won’t move themselves.”
He rolled over and crawled to a chair so he could pull himself up. Then, he made his way for storage. It was almost all fuel canisters.
“How could she have this much fuel and underestimated on food?” he asked himself while rubbing his belly. The baby was kicking every minute which he hoped was a good sign. There was an even better one once he worked up the courage. For now, he nudged one off the shelf and rolled it to the side. Knowing her, she’d probably want the shelves moved, too. After eighteen of them, he thought he was getting into a pattern. Then, he stumbled, pushing the canister into the row and spilling all of them on the floor. He winced.
“At least, I’m here to help,” said Phelix, from behind him, “I came as soon as I heard.”
The Cat Person moved his unbuttoned blue shirt out of the way and put his hands on the thin cotton shirt.
“Still ten kicks an hour?” he questioned as he kept his hands on the bump and Jack nodded.
“I wish I could do something more thorough, but Randeh ransacked my machines,” the medic apologized, taking out a stethoscope and putting it to his belly, “Heartbeat’s strong, everything seems good…That was just wrong to kick you like that.”
“Oh, I know the baby’s fine,” Jack told him because he tried asking through their minds and baby had sent back an image of his feet, “Can I hear it though?”
“Of course,” he said and handed the top part so he could listen. His fur tickled the other man’s hand. However, all was forgotten when he heard that thump-thump…
“I think that’s one of the best things I’ve ever heard in my life,” the former leader of Torchwood stated with a giant grin.
“I just hope we reach somewhere tomorrow,” Phelix said with a worried expression. That night, he was pretty sure he wasn’t the only one not to sleep well.
“Oskerion!” the Captain yelled as they ate their meager rations, “We finally have that working at least. Now, I want to send…”
“Oskerion is uninhabited in this century,” Jack tried to point out and she glared at him with her yellow eyes.
“When I want your opinion, I will ask for it and that will happen never,” said Hoke, crossing her arms, “In fact, I want you and Randeh to explore together. We’ll be able to land and you’ll scout for food.”
“Here’s your tea,” Tomi spoke, handing him a metal cup and he nodded his thanks. The landing went smooth for a ship that was falling apart and the two of them went out into the atmosphere; not needing suits which was lucky. However, it would be freezing on the planet's surface and Phelix tossed him a warm fur coat to put on. He was beginning to feel more tired then usual as they walked. Nothing was in sight except the ship.
“Let’s rest here,” Randeh suggested and he nodded; barely able to keep his blue eyes open.
When he woke up, everyone was gone.
“No, no, no, this cannot be happening!” he yelled into the desolation. He jumped up and down which made it worse since he’d forgotten about not having shoes anymore. His wrist-strap confirmed that there were no life-forms anywhere in the atmosphere. With his coats on, but only one of them buttoned, he started walking. There was a cave where he could…could what exactly? Sort out what to do? There were no ships to transport him and no coordinates for him to input. He could either die here with the baby or try for a different century which could kill the baby. With no better idea, he reached the cave where he was safe from the elements, but as time went on, he became hungry, thirsty and was giving up hope.
“I don’t want to die. If I die, then you die and you’re one of the best things to happen to me,” Jack spoke while rubbing his bump and trying not to cry because the tears would just freeze to his face. He wasn’t sure what to do and he’d never really believed in God so he went to the only higher authority he could think of.
“Please, Ianto, I know you always believed, if you're up there, if you have some pull, please save us,” he begged while trudging back into the snow. After sending a distress signal from his wrist-strap although there was no one for it to reach, he passed out.

Date: 2009-12-26 03:43 pm (UTC)Hmm, so where did you think it was going?
Yes, I made sure in a later chapter to clarify that it's the baby's feet that Jack saw.
I agree, if Jack had lost the baby, he would have tracked her down and probably killed her...after torturing her.
Hehe, it probably was John, I hadn't thought about that.
Thank You!
