March 9th, 2010
Jack spent the next couple of weeks just taking care of Iefan which was a full-time job.
However, this evening his son had been screaming for over two hours straight and it was the second straight day of that happening. He was carrying him around the entire ship when the Doctor appeared in front of him and he’d noticed how the Time Lord looked almost as tired as he was.
“I don’t know what’s wrong, I’ve tried everything, even that vibrating chair that the store keeper suggested, I don’t know what to do,” Jack admitted although he hated admitting it. It felt like he was already failing as a parent.
“Let me see him,” the other man suggested and he handed the infant over, “Evening, Iefan, how about we go on a walk? Have you been been given a proper tour of the garden room yet? It’s nice there, come on.”
He was prepared to follow them when the Doctor called out, “Why don’t you get some sleep, Jack? You look like you need it.”
After he woke up from his nap, the baby wasn’t in his room so he traveled to the garden room. The Time Lord was singing a song that was both beautiful and the oddest thing he had ever heard. However, the most important part was that Iefan was sleeping in the other man’s arms.
“You got him to sleep,” Jack said and he was incredibly grateful.
“I did,” the Doctor agreed, “but I have some bad news. I think he has colic.”
Was colic a horrible disease? It sounded terrible.
“Can we cure it? Is there anything I can do?” he asked and looked at his son who seemed so peaceful at the moment.
“No, it’s nothing like that. It's common with humans, but he’s probably going to be screaming every night for a couple of hours for the next two or three months,” the Time Lord explained, “and I might not be around every night.”
“Maybe you could teach me the song,” he suggested and the other man didn’t look too keen on that idea. He had sung songs when Alice was a baby, but they had been hits originally sung by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra or someone else from the World War II era.
“It’s a Gallifreyan lullaby, it’s not the easiest thing in the galaxy to learn,” the Doctor spoke, but as the next week went by, he had to change his mind.
“Someone’s calling,” Jack told him with the mobile in his hand and the Time Lord groaned as he took it. They traded the mobile for the baby and he sat down in the rocking chair. As soon as he stopped singing, Iefan started crying at the top of his lungs again.
“No, Christina, the baby’s not mine. It’s a friend’s…you did what?!” the Doctor exclaimed and exited the room. Jack woke up later when the other man came back with slightly soiled suit.
“There were problems, when did he finally fall asleep?” he asked and the former time agent spoke in a hoarse voice, “After an hour and a half of screaming.”
Indecision shown in his brown eyes before he said, “Fine, I’ll try to teach you the song.”
If he wasn’t so tired, he would have thanked him and asked what he meant by "problems". Instead, he fell back asleep. Whatever tale the Doctor had to tell about what happened would have to wait until the next day.

Even though Jack was able to learn it after a month, he could never do it as well as the Doctor and one night, he just sat and watched him until Iefan was fast asleep.
“Are you going to take a new companion now?” he inquired and the other looked at him like he was crazy.
“No, nothing’s changed. I still don’t want to get hurt like that again,” the Doctor answered and Jack had to shake his head in disbelief. To think, he used to fancy that man quite a bit. Deep down, he had to admit that he still did a little; probably always would no matter how stupidly stubborn he was being right now.
“You’ve already made that choice to be hurt again whether you want to admit it or not,” he told him in a soft voice.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” the Time Lord insisted and the other man came closer.
“Iefan, you love him. I know you do, but he’s not like us. He’s mortal,” the parent uttered and his voice threatened to break as he said it, “One day, he’s going to die and be with his daddy and it’s going to break my heart at least…but I think, from the look on your face, that it’s going to break both of yours, too.”
“I can’t escape it, can I?” the Doctor whispered as he looked only at the baby in his arms.
“No, you can’t. Neither can I. He taught me that,” Jack spoke and hoped at least he’d have a long, long time with him.
Towards the middle of June, his colic finally cleared up and the four month old developed a cheery disposition. He felt like there were no more reasons not to go back.
“Iefan and I are going back to Cardiff soon,” Jack told the Doctor over breakfast as the boy sat on his lap, “I want him to have a Welsh accent like his father.”
He decided not to mention Ianto wanting the boy to know his aunt.
“You realize that he’s not Ianto. I know he looks a lot like him, but he’s going to be his own person,” the Time Lord spoke and he nodded.
“I know that,” he asserted and couldn’t help touching his son’s hair. The soft, dark hair he was born with had fallen out and was being replaced with blond locks.
“It’s just sometimes, I’m not so sure,” the other man commented, “but I’m really going to miss both of you.”
“It won’t be right away, the house isn’t remotely babyproof,” Jack assured him which made the Doctor smile.
“The TARDIS isn’t babyproof either,” the Time Lord tried to claim and it was time for the former time agent to grin.
“No, but she wouldn’t let him get hurt,” he argued and Iefan coughed. When both adults looked at him, he laughed and flapped his arms. His right hand clutched a white sheet with Winnie the Pooh embroidered on one corner.
“Well, he certainly takes after you,” the Doctor remarked and Jack chuckled, kissing the top of his son’s head. He thought about how quite a few people would be surprised, or at least amused at domesticated he’d become; changing diapers, testing bottles and reading Iefan to sleep each night with a chapter from Harry Potter. It was very different from his previous lives, but that’s one of the reasons why he liked it so well.
The Doctor picked up his empty cereal bowl with the metal spoon clanking against the porcelain and leaned over to take a look at Iefan. His lips were inches away from Jack's own and he was struck with the urge to bridge that gap. Why? Why? Why?
Before he could think anything else, he acted on that impulse. The kiss caught the Doctor off-guard and it was brief before Jack pulled away; almost embarrassed. He almost said something, but the words wouldn't come. They just stared at each other for almost a minute and the Doctor hurried to the sink. Why had he done that? Well, he had done that before when the Doctor had been in a different body and he had still been mortal. However, that was before marching off to his death. This was...he didn't know what this was...
He just hoped it would go away and be forgotten. It seemed to be the case until that evening as he bathed Iefan in his special tub. There was a knock on the door and the door opened to reveal the Doctor. He was wearing his brown suit with the buttons undone and the shirt hanging out.
