Veronica Mars and Marvel Casting

I'm not sure who else saw it but the Veronica Mars film was a wonderful experience earlier this year. I loved being able to watch it surrounded by fellow fans who knew all the jokes...even better than me. My mom also had fun although she treated it as a similar experience to the Doctor Who cinema experience where she didn't know everything going on but had fun anyway. She was very happy that she ended up with Logan, hehe.
I also loved the addition of even more former Freaks and Geeks castmembers to the Veronica Mars family although I was sad that Leighton Meester's character got recast. It made it so I couldn't remember who the original character was.
I also need to read those Veronica Mars novels...has anyone else read them?
Okay, why does a nine month old film still matter?
Why Marvel, of course.
Krysten Ritter aka Gia Goodman was just cast as Jessica Jones aka Jewel!
Obviously, two very different characters but I think she can pull this off.
Now, as I was watching the film, that casting thought never struck me but I did think Ryan Hansen would make an awesome Danny Rand.
I know, I know, the internet says that I shouldn't want yet another bond haired Caucasian and with most characters, I'd agree but here are the complications I see with Iron Fist...
1. He has to be an outsider who's underestimated. Either he has the long blond hair and is assumed to be a brain-dead surfer or he has the short hair and is assumed to be a thug, it's a no-win scenario and that's what I like about him. He transcends the imagined stereotypes.
2. Can he be a different sort of outsider while changing his race to Asian? I suppose, but how? If he's a smart Asian alienated from his less intelligent peers, then he IS a stereotype. They could deal with an Asian-American who's far removed from his cultural roots but the martial arts would make him into a stereotype again. Basically, if he's any sort of Asian who knows martial arts, then he's a stereotype and will garner complaints.
Melinda May's use of Wushu garnered complaints and that only happened because the actress already knows it! Why wouldn't you capitalize on an actor's knowledge the same way that Coulson has used Brazilian Jujitsu moves?
3. Danny and Luke have to be of different races. When they were first paired up as BFFs, it was a lot more revolutionary to have a Caucasian and African-American as friends. Now, it's more normal but still not the norm, unfortunately. However, I do see how it could be good to have Danny be Asian or some other race.
I just think Marvel is pretty screwed with this one; damned if they do and damned if they don't.
Also, just as I'm railing against Exodus and their use of Caucasians for Egyptians, it appears I will be watching a Caucasian play Jesus...dammit, Ewan McGregor, why do you have to be so hot in everything?

Date: 2014-12-13 09:27 pm (UTC)As for the Exodus... it's not so much the Caucasians that irk me, it's God as a temper-tantrum throwing pre-teen. Really Scott, really?!!?
