Jack sat down with the carrier in front of him.

“He was meant to be, wasn’t he?” he asked, not taking his eyes off his son and the curls that both parents had shared although Jack’s had gone away as he grew older.

“Of course, he was,” the Doctor tried to reassure him and laid a comforting hand on his shoulder, “Otherwise, we would have gone back and he’d have never been born.” He laid another hand on Jack’s other shoulder before continuing, “I was merely wondering aloud if that might be why the TARDIS keeps messing with the dates when you try to visit Cardiff. She seems to think she knows better than me, perhaps she does. The psychic paper works the same way.”

The former time agent resisted a chuckle at the other man admitting that there was something in the universe that might know more than he did.

“Like once, I followed it to find this woman who knew all about me and I’d never seen her before in my life,” the Doctor spoke, “but apparently, she must be something really special in the future…she knew my name. My real name.”

Jack wasn’t sure what to say. He didn’t know of anyone who knew him as anything except the Doctor.

“Since you married him, did Iefan’s father know your real name, Jack?” he asked and his brown eyes were looking down at him. Ianto had wanted to know once, but at that point, life on Boeshane had seemed so long ago.

“No,” he admitted and shook his head. Someday, he could still tell him except it felt unnecessary at this point. It didn’t matter anymore.

“I think I might have married her, or will marry her…I suppose that would be the future tense,” the Doctor babbled with his hands in his brown trouser pockets and it was strange yet wonderful to see him this way, “The one I mentioned who knew my name. There was someone about the way she looked at me and talked…it was too familiar for a companion and why else would I have told her that?”

Jack couldn’t help smiling at him. He reminded him more of how the Doctor was when they first met.

“What was her name?”

“River Song, I met her in the fifty-first century, but I’m not sure where she’s from,” the other man answered and the former time agent tried not to reveal his surprise. It didn’t work.

“What is it? You knew the name,” said the Time Lord before shaking his head, “No, spoilers, I shouldn’t know.”

“Martha mentioned her name, they’ve met,” Jack explained and thought maybe he should distract him from thinking too much about it, “But that century was a very good century.”
The Doctor shook his head again yet he’d managed a smile out of him.

"What about Shakespeare? You used to talk about wanting to meet him," the other man reminded him.

"I did, Martha even inspired a few sonnets," the Time Lord replied with a grin, "I would love to go back, but earlier...apparently, I did something to really annoy good Queen Bess."

They both laughed.

*****************************************************************

Over two weeks passed and Iefan wouldn’t stop crying. Jack tried pressing a plush cow that talked.

"Moo, I'm so sleepy," the cow drawled but it was no use. His son's howls intensified and he thought about Ianto. He had tried to know everything so would he have been able to sort out what the problem was? Jack didn’t know what to do and the Doctor was outside on Platinda.

“And he left his mobile on the console again,” Jack complained as he saw it lying there. Outside wasn’t a pleasant visit. There was some sort of conflict between two groups. However, he was desperate because he hated hearing Iefan in pain.

“This isn’t going to be like Cardiff or Newport. This isn’t even Earth. It’s a whole different planet in another time and it might be very strange, but no matter what happens, I’m not going to let anyone happen to you. I love you,” he told his son who continued screaming and kissed him. As one last idea, he looked into those pale blue eyes and asked with his mind like when Iefan was still inside him, What’s wrong?

Owww! Came the response and nothing more specific than that. Jack had no choice. His son was in pain so he made sure his own mobile was in his coat and took the nappy bag, just in case. He could call Martha, but if it was something dangerous, she couldn’t help him. The TARDIS door opened for him and closed behind him. Then, he took the key from the pocket and pressed the button. The Doctor had added a special feature. It beeped like a car which usually made Iefan laugh but not today.

Outside, it was sandy with large dirt mounds dotting the landscape. Jack looked around and spotting what he thought was sunlight glinting off metal, he headed west with his coat covering the baby’s face and body. After half an hour of Iefan screaming the whole way, he found the Doctor between two groups of races. The ones closest to him were brown like the sand and covered in scales with small ears, like Armadillos. Cowering in pain on the other side of the Time Lord were beings with short brown fur, long snouts and large ears like dogs. As Jack stepped nearer, they covered their ears and doubled over. Then, they retreated. When that happened, the armadillo creatures started hugging him and he smiled, not exactly sure what had just happened.

“Jack! I thought I recognized the baby cry,” he commented as walked closer. The residents moved aside for him to do so.

“These are the Cankorbians and the ones who ran away are the Delrobs. They wanted the Cankorbians’ land and through a misunderstanding, believed that I had a secret weapon,” the Doctor explained, “I wasn’t sure how we were getting out of that one. Then, you showed up. The Delrobs, unlike the Cankorbians, have excellent hearing and were repelled by Iefan’s crying.”

He put a hand on the nearest Cankorbian, saying, “Do you have any recording equipment? If you had a copy of his crying, you could play it if they ever come back.”
There was talking amongst the natives and some of them went away somewhere.

“I’m glad you were able to benefit from my son’s pain, I thought he had colic again…”

“No, he’s too old to have colic anymore,” the Doctor interrupted.

“Fine, but he’s in pain and I’ve tried everything; singing, rocking, bath. I even asked him and all he could tell me was that it hurt,” Jack complained and the other man focused his brown eyes in concentration.

“He’s about six months old now, right?” he asked and the parent corrected, “Not until next week.”

“Still pretty close though,” the Doctor commented and looked at the baby, opening his mouth wide, “Now, Iefan, can you open up like this? Awww. Poor thing, of course, you’re hurting.”

“What? What is it? Is it bad? What’s going to happen?” Jack questioned and didn’t appreciate the glare that the other man gave him like he was an idiot.

“Jack, not every ailment is the end of the world. Some things are perfectly natural. One would be inclined to think you’ve never had children before,” he chastised and motioned towards the baby, “Now, let me hold him while you look inside your son’s mouth.”

He obliged and the Doctor was holding down his son’s bottom lip. A little bit of white was peeking through the pink gum.

“His first tooth!” he exclaimed and did feel like a moron. Several Conkorbians hugged him as one rushed to them with a machine in his hands. His footsteps made the brown sand rise into the air. After recording a full minute of Iefan’s crying, they hugged Jack again, thanking him.

“Is it true the child’s first tooth has come in?” inquired who Jack guessed was the leader. He nodded.

“We have a celebration on that occasion in our culture, but we’re also indebted to him for driving away the Delrobs. We’d like the three of you to stay for a feast tonight,” the Conkorbian continued.

“Of course, but do you have something for him? Teething ring? Ointment? Anything?” Jack asked because as glad as he was about knowing the reason; he still hated to hear him in pain. The native nodded and they followed after him to a door in the ground that he pulled up.

I love how Jack is so in the dark about what can be bothering his baby. Good thing he had "a Doctor" to help him. Another good chapter.

hehe, yes, it's been awhile since he's been around babies so he's fairly clueless.

Thanks

So cute that he was clueless on the tooth bit! I will forever be indebted to my Babysitter's Handbook for suggesting frozen baby washcloths! I can't wait to see this celebration now! :)

That is a good idea, I've never heard of that. I hope you didn't feel short-changed by the celebration since I didn't focus a lot on it.

Thank you

Baby's first tooth can be so painful, glad Jack left the TARDI or the little one wouldn't have gotten any relief!
Thanks for sharing!
