Chapter Nine: Nine Weeks Along Continues

The morning after, Ianto sat at Rhi's kitchen table beside Jack as his niece and nephew sat down. He hoped he could make it through this without having to run for the loo.

"Who's he?" Mica asked with suspicious brown eyes over her breakfast plate.

"I'm Jack Harkness," he said with a grin while holding up his coffee. Since that wasn't very enlightening, Ianto added, "He's my boyfriend."

"That's nice," Johnny commented before cutting up his banger.

"I've never met him before," David said with a look.

"He's a new boyfriend," Ianto explained and knew he shouldn't care about their approval of his boyfriends...but he did...

"But a boyfriend," Jack stressed as though pleased that he'd been upgraded from guy that fucked him once or twice.

"So, he came over for breakfast because he's your new boyfriend?" David asked and he wondered if he'd been searching for things other than murder on the internet.

"He came from his house, drove over to our house because he thought it would be fun to have breakfast with us so he drove his car to our house to have breakfast," Rhi explained as she sat down with her own plate while not making eye contact. Her cheeks also grew a bit pink.

"Because he likes breakfast so much," Johnny said with a wink at Ianto.

"I love breakfast," said Mica and yawned. Ianto drank his orange juice that was supposed to be full of folic acid.

"You want to hear something neat? We're going to have a baby together," Jack spoke without warning. Ianto started choking on his juice and Jack had to pound his chest. Why had he done that? He glared at his boyfriend. Rhi was giving him the Evil Eye and Johnny was looking at his plate. The three of them hadn't decided how to handle the situation even though they would have to wonder why he kept getting fatter.

"What?" David asked as his sister shrugged and continued eating.

"Yeah, a baby," Jack confirmed and he kicked him under the table.

"But you're not married. Aren't you supposed to be married to have a baby?" David persisted and crossed his arms.

"You don't have to be," Johnny said which might not have helped them.

"But they should be because they love each other and people who love each other get married and have babies," Rhi spoke in the tone that he knew was false. She still didn't like Jack and wouldn't mind if he was out of the picture. Ianto may like Jack, but he wasn't won over yet either.

"Where do babies come from?" David asked and Ianto knew he was looking for trouble.

"Where do you think they come from?" Rhi questioned in between bacon.

"A man and a woman have sex," he answered and his mum coughed. Johnny was open-mouthed and Jack laughed as Ianto grimaced.

"What's sex?" asked Mica. Ianto never thought he'd be so pleased to hear his mobile ring. At the same time, Jack's went off as well.

"Gwen?" he asked into the phone as soon as he saw the caller.

"Everyone's being called into work. There's been a plot found where aliens are brainwashing humans with jewelry," she informed him as Jack read his text message.

"I'll be right there," he told her and hung up, "I have to go."

"Me, too. Mickey is having some sort of problem with his Woah or WoW or whatever," Jack explained and turned to Rhi, "It was a lovely breakfast. Thank you."

Ianto followed him since his car was still at Jack's place.

Jack hated situations like this where he was brought in to do what had to be done, but they didn't want to do themselves. It wasn't the victim's fault since the gold necklaces and bracelets were controlling their actions. They didn't deserve to die because of that. However, shooting at him and the other Torchwood employees trying to stop them couldn't continue. It didn't leave him much of a choice in the matter. An empty office building had provided the perfect cover for the aliens' operation. It even had lots of hiding places. He held his gun at the ready. Then, he couldn't believe his luck. There was a security room with banks of monitors. He tried to think who would be closest and pressed his com-link.

"Owen, get a couple of men up here on the north-west side of the fifteenth storey. There's a working security room with access to the entire building," he spoke aloud. He studied the monitors marked for the fifteenth storey but a lower level monitor caught his eye.

"Shit," he spat and saw that Ianto was part of the intelligence team trying to stop the aliens' primary target...hacking into the defense satellites. He'd seen Ianto take the call except he'd assumed that Ianto would remain behind at headquarters. Had he even told them he was pregnant? There was nothing he could do. Jack hoped Mickey would be able to protect them and that his secret wouldn't come out yet. He wasn't ready to tell him. A pop exploded in the enclosed space and he tried to jump out of the way. Too late, he felt the bullet lodge in his chest near his heart. He tried to focus and shot at his shooter; a young woman with long brown hair. She howled in pain, dropped the gun and clutched at her missing fingers before the gold necklace took over again. The woman ran and lunged for him. If he had been in perfect health, he could have dodged, but he could feel himself dying. She kicked him in the groin and when he doubled over, she jumped on his back. Jack summoned up the rest of his strength and slammed backwards into the wall. There was a cracking sound and they both fell to the floor. He saw that she was still breathing and everything went black.

Ianto sat beside his sister on her patio while they watched Jack and the kids in the backyard. He had tried to contact Jack after the mess with the aliens brainwashing people, but it had been a day or two before his call was returned. Jack did apologize though: said he'd been sick and didn't want Ianto to catch it which was considerate.

"En garde!" David yelled and brandished a plastic sword at Jack.

"Turn over Excalibur!" Jack yelled back with a green lightsaber in his hand.

"What do you think of him? He's good with them, yeah?" Ianto asked and leaned back in his chair. Jack allowed David to get the upper hand and pin him in the grass.

"Oh no, you're stealing all my magical powers!" Jack wailed in a dramatic voice and David was grinning.

"A little too good," Rhi said. He couldn't help noticing her voice was full of suspicion.

"What are you on about?" Ianto asked. Mica jumped up and down on the trampoline before stopping for a second.

"I'm Hermione and I'm going to freeze him! Pretty-Face Totally!" she screamed and hit David with an imaginary wand. David froze immediately and fell off. Jack rose to his feet.

"Has he told you about any kids he has? Does he have any siblings that he's close with? Nieces? Nephews? Does he have an ex with kids?" Rhi asked before drinking some of her wine. Jack took the sword so he had two weapons.

"I only really need one. Mica, would you like a sword?" Jack asked and she stopped jumping again.

"Yes," she agreed and jumped off rather than using the ladder. They both gasped as she landed, but she bounced back up and took the lightsaber from him.

"I don't remember him saying anything about kids, but I still haven't found out a lot about him," he admitted and saw her frown. Mica hit the lightsaber against her plastic playhouse for awhile before dropping it.

"I don't wanna play this anymore," she announced and went back to the trampoline.

"Does that mean I'm unfrozen?" David asked from the grass.

"How do you know he's not married with kids? Maybe that's why he didn't bother to phone you for two days? Maybe that house is just where he takes mistress or mister or whatever you'd call a bloke on the side," Rhi pointed out and he hated how it made sense.

"Maybe he just has a youthful mind," Ianto suggested.

"So, you'll be taking care of two babies then," she remarked as David took the fallen lightsaber.

"Actually, he mentioned once that he had been involved in an accident and now the government pays him money...so I was thinking he might have brain damage," Ianto told her as David chased Jack.

"Wow, you sure know how to pick them," Rhi retorted and Ianto sighed. He was getting tired of her attitude. This was his baby's father and he had to make the most of it.

"And Johnny's quite the prize? How long has he been gone to the loo? You seriously think he's not beating one off right now?" asked Ianto before having some of his lemonade, "At least brain damage isn't genetic."

"I'm going to get you!" Jack yelled as he was now chasing David who climbed on top of the trampoline. Jack followed him.

"I'm going to get you! Whoa!" he yelled and fell off the trampoline. The two kids laughed and he gave Ianto a wink.

"Just lay off him a bit, yeah?" Ianto asked her.

"Okay, I'll try," she said and he was satisfied with that for now.

"I'm gonna hex you!" Mica yelled with a laugh.

*******************************************************

Jack liked getting to know Ianto's family. David and Mica were really cute. He wondered what their baby would be like. It had been a week since he came over and played with the kids in the backyard. Ianto was eleven weeks along and napping. He still didn't appear to sort out that Jack really worked for Torchwood, but Jack would tell him...when the time was right. When Johnny said he was taking the kids to the playground, he'd volunteered to go with him. David and Mica were running around with bubbles.

"They seem to love bubbles," Jack commented and Johnny nodded.

"They have fits over bubbles," Johnny told him.

"Yeah," he spoke and thought about when he blew bubbles with Steven a few months back.

"That's an incredible thing about a child. What's so great about bubbles?" Johnny wondered aloud.

"They float. You can pop them. I mean, I get it. I understand it," Jack said while Mica looked mesmerized by the floating globes.

"I wish I liked anything as much as my kids like bubbles," Johnny spoke in a gloomy tone.

"That's sad," Jack commented and wondered if Ianto or Rhi knew how miserable he was.

"It's totally sad. Their smiling faces just point out your inability to really enjoy anything," Johnny complained.

"It's going to be okay," Jack said and hoped he was right.

"Who knows? Is anybody okay? I'm not okay...and don't ask me to lend you any money, yeah?" Johnny tried to joke. Jack would rather joke than be serious. He waited a good minute or so before asking, "Can I just have some?"

"No!" Johnny declared with a smile. After another minute, he added, "That must be hard for you...getting another bloke pregnant. It's still..."

Johnny shivered.

"It really wasn't that hard to do actually," Jack replied with a grin especially after seeing the other man's expression.

"But actually seeing...it...is there something to see?" Johnny asked, crossing his arms.

"No, he's not that far along yet. He just looks like he's had a few too many beers," Jack explained, "It's just...different especially seeing the sonogram."

"Thanks," Ianto told Gwen after they came back from the field. After he was expected to go after their suspect, she switched with him so he would guard the perimeter instead.

"No problem, I wouldn't want anything to happen to the little angel," she said and squeezed his shoulders.

"Ianto, Gwen, guess who's finally back from New York?" asked a voice and they turned to see Martha.

"Martha!" they both cried as she ran to them. First, she hugged Gwen. Then, she hugged Ianto with a longer, lingering hold that ended with her hand on his abdomen.

"You can't feel anything yet," he told her.

"Right, too early, ten weeks?" she asked and he shook his head.

"Twelve, only seven more months to go," Ianto said and felt the grin come over his face.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there to confirm it, but I hope I can be here for the rest of it," Martha spoke, "How's it coming? Anything abnormal?"

He gave her a look.

"Anything we wouldn't find in a female pregnancy," she clarified and folded her arms.

"Well, I'm growing a uterus, tits and who knows what else," he stated, "and I had to borrow these trousers because mine are too tight but today is the second day where I haven't thrown up."

"Excellent!" Gwen cried; jumping up and down and hugging him. It made Ianto a little uncomfortable, like she was more excited about his pregnancy than he was.

"You're growing...?" she asked and he nodded, "and will you grow all of it?"

It still scared him, but there weren't any extra holes down there so that was a good sign.

"I don't know," he admitted, "I haven't had an appointment in three weeks."
Gwen and Martha both gasped as though he'd committed murder.

"What?"

"He's still on active field duty, too," Gwen tattled like a five year old.

"Ianto!" Martha admonished, "You know all the things that could go wrong, like miscarriage."

"I know, but..." he started and tried to form it into words, "but I don't want them to find out. They'll want me to either end it or be studied. I couldn't take either of those options."

The two women looked at each like they were at a loss what to say.

"At least tell Guppy so she can keep an eye on you and take you off active duty. She doesn't have an obligation to tell her superiors," Martha told him, "There are plenty of other employees who can cover things until it's born. Even the freelancers, like Mickey or Jack."

"Ooh, Jack..." Gwen remarked and could have almost been drooling.

"Yeah," Martha agreed with a far away expression. Everyone seemed to have the same opinion about Jack, but he'd never managed to meet him. He had found Mickey odd though since he had played the role of slacker so convincingly when they met. Ianto wondered if his Jack knew Mickey was involved with Torchwood. However, if he asked and Jack didn't know, that would lead to questions about how Ianto knew unless Ianto just said he'd seen Mickey at work. Maybe it wasn't worth it. He would decide before he returned Jack's trousers.

"Why does everyone appear to have a crush on Jack?" he asked them.

"Who wouldn't have a crush on Jack?" Gwen retorted, "I could look at that ass all day."

"Mmhmm," Martha agreed with a smile, "and those blue eyes..."

"I have blue eyes," Ianto reminded them.

"Yeah, but it's not the same," Gwen said, shaking her head, "Jack plays for both teams."

"So, you never know if you might get a snog if a mission's gone really well," Martha spoke with a laugh. He supposed he couldn't compete with that. His and Gwen's mobiles went off. This time, it was a text message. He groaned at what it said.

"Ughh, Weevils, why can't they stay in Cardiff?" Gwen complained, "We have to go."

"Be careful and schedule an appointment with me," Martha told him with a stern expression. He knew she would be after him again if he didn't.

******************************************************************

The small white ball sailed back and forth between John and Mickey. Everyone else watched the table tennis match.

"I have fifteen years of tennis lessons," John boasted and Jack rolled his eyes. Sleeping with one instructor did not add up to fifteen years worth of lessons.

"And twelve years of sucking dick lessons," Mickey retorted.

"You should try it sometime," John quipped.

"So?" Owen asked to Jack with a can of Diet Coke in his hand. He shook his head.

"I can't play rugby with you. Ianto didn't like Frobisher so now he's made an appointment with Martha," he explained and saw Owen smirk.

"You'll pretend you've never met her before," the other man guessed.

"We've discussed it. She understands I'm trying to protect him as well as being a coward," he spoke and Owen nodded.

"You think he likes you?" he asked.

"He's trying to," Jack admitted which was good enough for now. It was better than hating him. He had a lot of exes that ended up hating him.

"He's entertaining the idea of liking you," Owen said.

"Exactly. I'll take that," Jack told him.

"Well, he's bringing you to the appointments. He must like you," he commented and popped open the can.

"He wants me involved with the baby," Jack said, "That's pretty good, I think, except for..."

"Yeah," Owen agreed. On one hand, it would be his child, but on the other, maybe it would have been better for Ianto if he hadn't even contacted him when he found out.
