Chapter Twelve: Sixteen Weeks Along

Faith gathered the cards spread before her and placed them back into a stack before sticking it into her dress.

"EastEnders, classic literature..."

"I need something good," Ianto interrupted her. She sat up very straight and her tone was serious as she spoke. "Then, tell Yvonne to stop messing with the void. She has no idea what she's dealing with."

Once again, Ianto hadn't a clue what she was referring to. Faith pushed the chair back and stood up.

"I'm finished here," she said and walked to the door.

"Yep," he agreed.

"Stop worrying so much, you're stressing her out," the girl said with a frown. Ianto caught himself wringing his hands. However, he had to laugh.

"I think Yvonne stresses herself out," he spoke.

"She's not who I meant," Faith told him and her gaze went to his middle. The baby was a girl. He was going to have a daughter. His mobile went off and he saw that it was Martha calling.

"Good news?" he asked her.

"The best, healthy, no abnormalities, I did it more than once just to be sure," she said and he could hear the happiness in her voice. A grin widened on his own face.

"Thanks, I have to go," Ianto spoke and hung up. Then, he stood and let Faith out of the room.

"Okay, John, I dare you to shoot just below the knot on the tree up there," Jack said pointing in their backyard.

"That one at the top?" John asked about the knot almost five metres up.

"Yes, that one," Jack confirmed and stood back with his arms crossed as John cocked the gun.

"Okay," Jack agreed with a nod and got into a perfect stance before turning and shooting Jack in the leg. Jack screamed and clutched his leg, "What did you do that for?"

"Because it's fun," John explained, "It's a lot more fun than shooting a dumb old tree."

Jack studied the wound. There wasn't an exit point so the bullet was stuck in his leg.

"Can I shoot you again?" John asked in a pleading voice and there was the sound of the backdoor opening.

"Can't you two go one week without hurting yourselves?" Owen exclaimed and waved his arms in frustration, "not everyone has a doctor conveniently living with them and some doctors don't even have to keep a fully supplied kit at all times, but no, not with you two. I have to be prepared for anything at all times."

"He's the one that shot me," Jack complained and John cocked the gun again.

"It's not like it hurts," John said and shot at him again. Jack just barely jumped out of the way.

"John, stop shooting Jack!" Owen yelled at him, "Jack, get in the kitchen. I have to take the bullet out unless you want to wait for it to pass or kill yourself."

"I could kill him if that was easier," John suggested with a grin.

"NO!" both of the other men screamed.

"What? You're immortal anyway, it's not like it matters or anything," John argued and cocked the gun a third time.

"It still smarts a bit," Jack retorted.

"John, give me the gun!" Owen demanded and held out his hand.

"No," John refused, "It's my gun."

"I don't care. I want you to stop shooting it!" Owen yelled, "And if you don't give it to me, I'll..."

"You'll what?" asked John with a smile.

"I'll...I'll shave off your hair when you're asleep," Owen threatened.

"I'd like to see you try," John replied and swung the gun around despite the safety being off.

"Fine, if you don't give me that gun right now, I will hide your copies of Poodle Variety," Owen said, "and I know your hiding places."

"You...you..." John hissed before giving the weapon over. Owen put the safety back on and Jack was just relieved that this meant his medical attention would be happening soon. It really did hurt, plus...

"This was my last clean pair of trousers," Jack complained at the fabric becoming redder and redder.

"How can that be, mate? You had a shit-load of them," John said, following them into the house.

"I did but Ianto keeps taking them because none of his clothes fit," Jack told them. At the time, it had seemed like the least he could do; loan Ianto some shirts and trousers. It was even kind of sexy to see him wearing one of his shirts and nothing else, but now...he was beginning to be annoyed.

"Oh, grow a pair," John retorted, "Just tell him to get his own clothes."

"He has to be seventeen or eighteen weeks along by now, right?" Owen asked while motioning for Jack to sit down, "Even your clothes won't be able to last for much longer."

"Eighteen," Jack confirmed and it was true. Last time they were together, Ianto had complained that things were getting tight again. He'd have a talk with him. Maybe he could make him see sense. Either that or he'd have to...he'd have to talk with Rhi. He didn't think she liked him very much.

******************************************************

Ianto hated shopping and his feet hurt. Just because Jack's trousers and shirts were a bit tight didn't mean he needed new ones. He could attach elastic or get a larger coat to cover it. There were options. Ianto hadn't needed Jack to mention his lack of maternity clothes in front of his sister and get her involved, that was just...tacky. Now, the three of them were in a men's clothing store. He followed behind them like a reluctant toddler. Somehow, they seemed to be getting along in their mutual worry over him.

"How big do you think the suits should be?" Jack asked her.

"I don't know, if he gets them big enough for month nine, then, they might look weird for right now, but...I don't know if we can get him to do this twice," Rhi said with a frown.

"You know 'he' is right here and can hear everything you say," he reminded them.

"Yes, but when we tried to involve you, you didn't have anything helpful to add. You just said that your feet hurt and you hated shopping," Rhi spoke, "But fine, would you rather get the suits that should fit you until it's born or get some a few sizes up and get more later?"

It was a horrible thought and by then, he'd be a lot more pregnant. It could be noticeable.

"No, I'll make do, I'll use a belt or take in some of the seams for the time being," Ianto said.

"Excuse me, sir!" Jack called out and when the employee came closer, "Those are some pretty eyes."

"Really? Thanks," said the young man with dark skin, "How can I help you?"

Seriously? He did have pretty eyes. However, that didn't mean that it needed to be said when you already had a pregnant boyfriend right beside you.

"We need a few suits for a client coming in and he's rather large in the stomach," Jack said held out his hands in front of him to demonstrate. Rhi moved the hands forward a few more inches.

"Just to be safe," she whispered. Was he really going to get that huge? He looked down at the small bulge of his stomach.

"And he could always have them altered on arrival if they don't meet his specifications," the employee pointed out with a smile.

"Exactly," Jack agreed and was flirting again except his right hand was on Ianto's ass.

"I have just the suits," the employee promised, "wait right here."

After he bought back a dozen, Jack convinced him to leave them alone for a few moments so they were able to go to a changing room. Rhi tried to follow them in, but he put his foot down. It was bad enough to strip in public without his sister watching.

"We need to get you more undershirts, too," Jack commented as he stripped off the buttoned-shirt. Despite wearing one of Jack's undershirts, it was riding up on his belly.

"No comments about new knickers?" Ianto asked.

"I like you better without them," he whispered and Ianto hated how easily it sprang up at the compliment. It was like being fourteen again.

"I think something else likes being unhindered, too," Jack uttered and pat his cock like it was a dog or cherished pet. He wanted to shove him away for acting like that, but instead, he found himself kissing his lips and wrapping his arms around him.

"I like the way you think, Ianto Jones," Jack spoke with his hands roaming the younger man's body.

"Oh, that's it," he whispered as they went lower before sucking on Jack's earlobe. Then, the moment was ruined in an instant. One of Jack's fingers strayed too far below his cock or perhaps he thought he'd found Ianto's asshole. Either way, it was off the mark. Instead, it found his newly formed vagina. He couldn't help yelping a little at the intrusion. There was a knock at the door and Rhi asked, "Jack, what are you doing to my baby brother in there?"

"Nothing, apparently," Jack complained in response.

"That's right, nothing because nothing is ever going in there," Ianto hissed with his arms crossed. Before Jack could try anything else, he tried on the closest suit he could reach. It felt like forever before he was allowed to leave the store.

"Look, a baby store!" said Rhi as they put the suits on the backseat of her car, "You haven't gotten any of those things either; changing table, nappies, romper suits, bassinet."

She locked the door and they walked to the baby store.

"You don't want to know the sex of the baby? That's no fun," Rhi complained and Ianto smiled. He hadn't told anyone that he knew: not even Jack, Gwen or Lisa. It was nice to have this little secret over everyone especially Rhi.

"Jack knows, but I've sworn him to secrecy," Ianto told her.

"I'll get it out of him," Rhi stated with such authority that he looked at Jack who shook his head and said, "Not going to happen."

The three of them walked inside and Ianto tried not to feel overwhelmed. The whole store was things the baby needed that he still hadn't purchased. He hadn't even thought about where all of it would go. He was lucky that he did have the small room he used for an office sometimes. It would do for now. However, he might have to think about...moving. Jack's place was out of the question though. He didn't trust any of Jack's roommates except maybe Owen. Owen was a doctor and did seem a little more responsible. On the other hand, he didn't want the baby anywhere near Tosh. Could they ever be a normal family? Most of the products tended to have pictures on the front: smiling babies, women, men. He couldn't help feeling different. Rhi had wandered to another part of the store, but Jack appeared to notice his frown.

"What? What is it?" he asked and put a hand on his shoulder.

"It's just...I feel so...out of place," Ianto complained and picked up one of the Baby Bjorn baby carriers.

"Why? You're having a baby and this is a baby store," Jack said, "It might not be the normal way of things..."

"It's not just that," Ianto interrupted and held up the box, "It's not like there are two happy blokes on the front of this box, is there?"

Jack sighed and crossed his arms.

"We could still have that," he said after a moment, "We could try."

"So now, it's we again? You remembered that we're having a baby, not just me?" Ianto spat and regretted it the second it came out, "Do you really think we could be them?"

The young couple and their baby on the front looked so happy and carefree, like they didn't have to worry about work or crazy housemates.

"Yeah," Jack spoke, "You're not happy?"

"I don't know," he admitted, "I should be. I know that. I love the baby already, it's not that...it's just...the rest of it."

It was out in the open now and he couldn't take it back. There was nothing else to say and no way to soften it. Jack seemed about to say something several times, but nothing came out. After a couple of minutes, Jack suggested, "Maybe we should see what your sister is up to."

Rhi was checking out the cots. They came in every style or color you could possibly want. Some were already decorated with the mobiles, plush animals and bedding. It was like he already had to guess what sort of girl his daughter would be and what she would like. She'd only been growing in him for sixteen weeks, how could he possibly know that?

"This is it. This is perfect," Rhi said and gestured to the one she was standing in front of. It was a light-colored wood...Oak, he realized and seemed sturdy. It also had no personality. Those that didn't know him would accuse him of the same and Ianto always hated that. He liked things to be neat and tidy; that wasn't the same as having no personality. Still, he wanted something a little more cheerful for her.

"Nice," Jack spoke in a neutral tone and looked at the price tag. Ianto hadn't looked at the price tag himself yet.

"Why are these things always so over-priced?" Jack commented and something about his word choice was strange until Ianto was interrupted in his thoughts by Jack continuing, "It's almost 2,100 pounds."

"Oh my god, is it solid gold or something?" Ianto asked and looked at the price tag himself, "We can just borrow yours, yeah?"

"No. You need your own cot," she said with such force that he dropped the tag to glance at her. He'd liked her cot. It was unisex with lemon bedding, but the white exterior would go well with any bedroom.

"If either of you had bothered to read the tag, you would notice that it's a SET. There's the cot, a wardrobe, chest of drawers and a shelf," Rhi explained, "You used to spend hours shopping on suits for work, but now that you have someone else to shop for...you act as bad as Johnny so I thought this might be easier on you. The full room at once so you'd only have to buy the extras."

It made sense. However, he was willing to put in a little time for something like this. It was his daughter. He turned around to think when he spotted the answer. There were other options to the cots. Ianto walked toward the section of Moses baskets. He was drawn towards one with lace and frills and pink extras. There was even a bunny on the blanket. It would give away the game though so he looked at a different one. This one was Hypoallergenic with a more gender neutral color scheme. The outside was white without frills while the blanket had blue and pink stripes.

"This looks more like one you'd pick," Jack whispered in his ear. Rhi walked up to them and studied it.

"You'd still have to buy a cot after six months," she pointed out and he had seen that on the tag.

"Sixty pounds, I think I could afford both," Ianto said and added silently, and then some because Torchwood paid very, very well, "Actually, with this, it's small enough that I could keep it in the bedroom."

"Just say farewell to your sex life then," Rhi retorted and crossed her arms.

"If he's up to it, I'm sure we can find a way," Jack told her. Ianto resisted the urge to joke; you're assuming that it would be with you. It had to be the pregnancy hormones which gave him this urge to say really horrible things sometimes. They spent over an hour in the store and when they walked out, everyone was carrying something. Ianto had found jeans and shirts that weren't too feminine looking. They wouldn't do at work, but he could wear them elsewhere, like at home. He had made Jack carry the box with the Moses basket and Rhi trailed behind. In fact, she was still inside. She was flirting with the delivery men who were going to bring the changing table and a small chest of drawers for clothes and nappies, like he was carrying in a second bag. They were almost to Jack's car when he spotted the group walking in their direction. Maybe they wouldn't spot them. He knew that was asking a lot though from these three.

"Hello!" Sarah Jane called and waved to him.

"Oh my God!" Rose exclaimed and they rushed over to him.

"Oh shit," Ianto spat because he'd met them through Torchwood. They'd been investigating the same strange events, but...

Would they sort out he was up the duff? Would it get back to Yvonne or somebody from them?

"Ianto," Sarah Jane greeted him with a smile. Luke stood beside her.

"Hi," he said and placed the bag of the baby's clothes over his bump.

"Oh, it's so good to see you," said Rose. He was afraid for a moment that she was going to try to hug him.

"You, too," Ianto agreed with a fake smile.

"And you know Jack," Rose spoke before giggling. Even Rose knew Jack? Well, he did appear to get around. Still, he didn't know as much about Jack as he should.
