Chapter Twenty-One: Twenty-nine Weeks Along

Jack hurried to the kitchen where he assumed Johnny would be and saw he was right. Johnny was taking pictures of the lit candles on the birthday cake with his mobile. Then, he picked it up before seeing Jack.

"What happened?" he asked.

"Thanks for warning me, mate I just walked into a trap! He rejected me! Because you, for some insane reason, told Rhi that I did mushrooms with you in Vegas! Now Rhi hates me even more and Ianto is convinced that I'm immature and can't commit. Thanks!" Jack complained and decided he didn't want to stay. Maybe he could try later.

"Really? I thought that he’d take you back," Johnny said, "I know he loves you."

"You know why he just rejected me? Because the two of you have such a bad marriage that he thinks we'd end up the same way!" Jack told him and decided to let himself out. Behind him, he heard the doors open and Johnny begin singing, "Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you, Happy..."

Ianto hadn't realized he was asleep until Gwen was nudging him awake. He rubbed at his eyes and yawned.

"Did anyone else catch me?" he asked her.

"Not that I know of, they've been pretty busy with the ghost shifts," she said and he was relieved.

"The last thing I need is to be reprimanded for sleeping at work," he mumbled, "I'd never hear the end of it."

"It's understandable. You are growing a baby inside: I'm sure that takes a lot on a body," Gwen spoke before sipping the Diet Coke in her hand. Ianto was still hoping Yvonne and upper management were unaware of his condition.

"I don't want them to be understanding. I want to be off their radar entirely," Ianto complained and stretched himself on the chair.

"Have you talked with Jack?" she asked and he saw her making notes like "flesh-eating".

"Not since the party," he replied and that had been two days ago, "I think Rhi scared him off."

"Maybe you should phone him," she suggested and he shrugged.

"It just feels like I put in all the work and he just went along with it. I want some proof that he really cares," he uttered and Gwen hugged him.

"Exterminate! Exterminate!" the Dalek cried and Jack kept himself in front of Ianto.

"Exterminate!" yelled a new one behind them. Jack moved to protect Ianto, but he was too late. The Dalek's weapon struck Ianto in the chest right above where their daughter rested and they were both gone in an instant.

"No!" he screamed at having them taken from him without even being able to say goodbye. He continued to scream.

He was still screaming as he shot up on the couch in a cold sweat; that had seemed so real. Jack couldn't take this anymore. He reached for his mobile and called Alice.

"Dad, it's eight o'clock at night, what's wrong?" she asked on the other end.

"I need to see you. I need to talk to someone. Can I come over?" he asked and waited for her answer.

"Fine, but Steven's asleep so you'll have to be quiet," she said.

"I'll be right over," Jack spoke and made it in record time. It only took him eleven minutes. Then, he sat on her couch with his head in his hands and knew he was scaring her, but he could still see the dream in his mind.

"You were all wrong. You said everything was going to be fine and nothing is fine. Nothing is fine," he complained and shook his head.

"So, the two of you discussed how you both felt about the baby and how you both worked for Torchwood? You were honest with her about how you can't die?" Alice asked.

"No, I didn't," he admitted upon hearing her full question.

"Then, you didn't follow my advice. I told you to be honest with him. You can go around blaming everyone else, but in the end, until you build a relationship of honesty, none of this is going to work out," Alice chastised him and he deserved every word. There also something he needed to tell her since she seemed to think the honesty was important.

"She isn't a she. I should have told you a long time ago, but you just assumed I meant a female," Jack whispered, "but his name is Ianto and it was an accident. Torchwood gave him the wrong drug and..."

"Well then..." Alice said and sat down, "Nothing's ever quite normal with Torchwood...and you didn't think this was important? Wouldn't this just make everything more difficult for him?"

"It probably didn't help," he agreed, "but he seemed more upset that I didn't read the baby books."

"You didn't read the books?" Alice asked like he was a moron, "Dad!"

"I don’t know what to do! I’m an idiot! Just tell me what to do!" he begged and hoped she would know the perfect way to get Ianto back.

"What? You want me to come up with a detailed plan of what you're supposed to be doing?" Alice questioned in confusion.

"Yes," he replied and Alice pursed her lips.

"Fine, get out your mobile and take notes. First of all, you need a new place of your very own without everyone else and if you get a few extra bedrooms, I might even think about letting you have Steven overnight..."

*********************************************************************

Ianto wrote on his laptop about one of their newer cases. He was watching security footage of an alien in a men's wear department when there was a knock on the door. When he opened it, there was Jack. It was Wednesday so they hadn't seen each other in four days.

"I...I bought you something," he said and handed him a bag. Ianto took it and reached inside for a bottle of bubble bath. It had become a pastime he'd grown very fond of since Martha told him to relax more.

"Thank you," he acknowledged and Jack nodded. For a moment, they just looked at each other before Jack left.

****************************************************************

It was hard to walk away from Ianto without a kiss or a touch or something, but Alice had told Jack that he needed to be more courteous with Ianto and re-establish their relationship as something other than just being sexual. Maybe in a week or two, he'd even ask him out for a date. Jack checked the safety on his gun and wondered what job Yvonne had for him this time. Usually, she settled for sending him a text.

***********************************************************

Ianto sat on the couch with David and Mica. They were mowing down droids on the screen. Then, the special screen popped up and Ianto was able to play as Yoda.

"Jedi Master! Result!" David acknowledged with a smile.

"I never get to be Yoda," Mica complained and set her controller down with a pout.

"How about next time, I'll let you have him?" Ianto suggested as he sliced through droids with ease.

"Really?" Mica asked.

"Yep," he agreed and she started playing again. Maybe this parenting stuff wouldn't be so tough after all.

********************************************************

Jack was signing papers for a house. It was amazing how fast these things could happen if you offered to pay in cash. He knew Alice had said a flat would suffice, but he and Ianto were both used to living in a house. If Ianto still wanted to share her, Jack thought the transition would be smoother if her life was similar at both places. This one seemed to have everything, including a swimming pool since Rhi had one and a decent sized garden that their daughter could run around and maybe have a slide or swing or something. He liked to think about it. Sometimes, she was playing with Steven. It was a lot more pleasant than thinking about his conversation with Yvonne the week before. When he remembered what she said, he wanted to break things. If she went through with it, he would leave Torchwood forever. He would take Ianto and the baby and they would go someplace far, far away.

************************************************************

Ianto kept waiting for the door to open. He'd never had an appointment without Jack being there.

"Did you tell him it was today?" Martha asked as the picture appeared on the screen.

"What?"

"Jack? Did you tell him about the appointment today?" she clarified and he shook his head.

"I assumed you'd tell him," Ianto said and she sighed.

"Baby's looking good. It's just her daddies that could use some work," Martha spoke, "Last time you and Jack really talked, he said it seemed like you wanted to cool things off so he thought you should set the pace."

"Shit," Ianto replied and rubbed his face, "He's been a bit...sweet lately, I...I didn't know."

The problem was he wasn't sure what he wanted that pace to be. Did he still love Jack enough to trust him again?

***********************************************************

Jack didn't have a lot to move from his old place to the new house. Most of Mickey's truck was filled with his clothes although Tosh had studied his collection of weaponry. Owen was out investigating a possible case of Weevil kidnapping. Jack wasn't sure what someone would want with Weevils. Martha had given him an updated sonogram photo and complained about being in the middle of their domestic. However, she had said that Ianto had missed him. Maybe that would mean that Ianto would phone him or something.
"Stripes?" Mickey asked with a grimace when he saw it.

"Just wait until you see the inside," Jack told him and opened the garage. After they parked, he opened the door and let Mickey see the pool room. He was pleased at the way his mouth gaped open.

"What? No spa?" Mickey tried to joke and Jack laughed.

"That's in my en-suite," he said, grinning.

"Can I move in?" Mickey asked as he gazed at the sauna.

"Nope," Jack replied.

****************************************************************

On Ianto's telly was a sitcom about all the characters going to an antenatal class. He had the strange feeling of being left out. It wasn't as though he was going to have a natural birth and he hadn't decided on breast-feeding. Still, almost everyone else thirty weeks along would either be going to classes or planning on it later. Ianto didn't even have the option. It'd been made for him. No one could find out that he was a pregnant male. He took a large bite out of his bar of dark chocolate.

*********************************************************************

Jack picked up the tiny romper suit and saw Alice smiling. She was definitely enjoying this as Jack tried to sort out what he wanted. He didn't care so much for ones with animals like mice or turtles. He kept picking ones that were nice and simple with basic colors until Alice rolled her eyes.

"If all the clothing you're going to purchase is going to be almost gender neutral, you have to let me buy her a little dress," she said, "I've never had a girl to buy for before."

"You could always get pregnant again," he suggested. After she grimaced, he agreed, "Fine."

"And you still haven't shown me her picture," Alice pointed out and Jack hesitated. They were in public where someone was always watching except everyone already appeared to know. This fueled his decision to take it out of his coat and hand it to her.

"Aww, but this looks like she dropped already," she said which was putting him to the test. Per her suggestion, he'd started reading the baby books and was almost done with the first one. He did recall that she was referring to the baby being headfirst.

"Is there something else you haven't told me?" Alice asked and waited for an answer.

"She was almost born two weeks ago, but Martha was able to stop it," he revealed and picked up the basket of clothes.

"Poor Ianto," she said and handed it back before squeezing his arm. It was too dangerous for them to acknowledge their real relationship in public.

****************************************************************

Ianto hung up dresses at the end of his wardrobe while he was keeping bodysuits in a drawer. They couldn't be sure what kind of girl she would be so he was trying to keep her options open. She could like dresses or she could like trains or she could like both. So much was unknown, it was a little scary. Then, his doorbell rang. Rhi would have just walked in, but maybe it was Jack. He moved as best as he could and opened the door to reveal Rose and a man he had seen before, but never met.

"Wow, that is huge! Rose told me Earth had its first pregnant man and I had to see for myself. You're not going to sell your story to the Sun or something, are you?" he asked with narrowed brown eyes. Ianto could just shake his head. His voice felt like it was hiding.

"Good, good, timelines and all...and Jack's the father?" the Doctor questioned.

"Yep," he confirmed and rested his hands on the bump. The Doctor ran hand over his face and mumbled, "Funny, I would have thought that'd be reversed..."

He shook his head and continued, "Still, this is amazing. Can I touch it?"

Ianto knew it wasn't smart to refuse the Doctor especially for such a simple request and removed his hands so the other would have better access. Rose put a hand on his belly, too. The baby showed her presence with a punch and a kick.

*******************************************************

"Now this is fun!" Mickey exclaimed as he and Jack pulled down part of a wall. He had only slept at the house a couple of days, but he disliked the current "master bedroom". It felt like the en suite was almost as big as the room itself so he was switching. However, it would require a couple of new doors. The first would lead to his new en-suite and the other would lead to the nursery so he could reach her faster. However, he'd keep her in a cot by his bed for the first few months, like Ianto was doing.

**********************************************************

Ianto was relieved it was Friday until given a summons to come to Yvonne's office. His stomach was in knots, his mind kept replaying everything he should have done differently and he felt his blood pressure rise even though he knew he shouldn't let it. Harry, her assistant, motioned for him to go in. When he opened the door, he saw that it was Yvonne and Alex. His heart sank. There was only one topic they would want to talk about with both of them.

"Ianto, thank you for coming in. I don’t want to shock you, but we know what’s under that jacket. You’re pregnant, have been for a while. From my count, you’re right around eight months and I don’t know why you felt you couldn’t tell us," Yvonne said with a fake smile.

It was quite simple, I don't trust you, Ianto thought.

"I'm really sorry," he apologized.

"It's not like you were the only one. That drug was used on quite a few employees before being stopped although most decided not to continue their pregnancies," Alex spoke.

"I just wasn’t expecting this and, I didn’t know how to handle it, and I didn’t want to lose my job. I’m really sorry," Ianto apologized again.
On hearing this, Yvonne's fake smile widened and she said, "It’s unfortunate that you didn’t tell us because you would’ve found out that we thought it’s great."

There had to be a catch.

"Really?" he asked.

"Of course, especially when we confirmed who the father is," Alex told him.

"See, Dr. Frobisher told us at your first appointment that Captain Jack Harkness appeared to be the father, but we wanted further proof so we've been watching," Yvonne explained and picked up a folder, "It certainly looked plausible when he attended all your appointments and you were spotted shopping together. Then, you and he had a domestic when you both were working in Shadwell. Now, that would be a sight to see so we bought him in, told him about what we knew and what does he do? Gives us further proof!"

There was more? Yvonne opened the folder and began taking photos out. There was Jack at a baby store, Jack's car in front of a strange house and Jack appearing to move into it.

"This is my favorite," Yvonne continued and took out a photo of Jack in the baby store with a dark haired woman who was holding a sonogram, "Because I really don't think that's her sonogram. Do you, Alex?"

Jack had cared enough to go baby shopping without his encouragement? Wait a minute, how did they get all these? Was Torchwood more paranoid then Ianto had ever realised? They must have had agents trailing them the entire time.

"No, my guess would be that it says 'Jones' on it," Alex replied and reached into the folder, "at least according to the enlargement."

Ianto recognized it as being from his last appointment; the one that Jack had missed and he was glad that Martha had given it to him. It didn't seem to be one of Jack's better moments though to have shown it in public.

"Aww, so cute," Yvonne said with a sneer, "especially considering who the woman is. You know who she is, don't you? Ianto?"

He shook his head in real ignorance of the fact.

"Ha! Trying to pretend as if you don't know. Still protecting Jack. I see. Being the good boyfriend or is it fiancé? It took awhile but we found out he purchased a diamond ring some months back. We know that's Melissa Moretti having a moment with dear old dad," Yvonne spoke and put her hands together. Jack had only mentioned one daughter, but her name was Alice. Was there another one?

"All these years, we've been looking for her and she's been under our noses the whole time!" Alex said and slapped his thigh, "We assumed after changing their names, she and her mother would have ran far, far away."

Ianto's phone chirped but he ignored it.
