David watched his mum get up from the table and everyone tried to pretend they didn't know what she was doing. Her face had turned colors and she had left in a hurry. Tomorrow was her biopsy and they were supposed to be taking her mind off of it except they seemed to be doing a horrible job of it.
"You're taking the day off?" Emyr asked to Johnny.
"No, I wanted to but...but she insisted she would be fine and I should just drive her to and from," his dad spoke with a sad expression. That sounded like his mum; stubborn to a fault. He knew his uncle had been the same way and wondered where they got it from. Was it his nan who called him Ianto sometimes despite the hair or the gramps he had no memory of? He wished nothing would ever happen to his mum. She didn't deserve it.

Gwen walked up to Jack in the cafe. He was on his laptop with Iefan rolling his dog across the table. He'd told her the day before that Rhi couldn't babysit so he was going to take the day off, but she was able to get him to compromise with telecommuting. He put his mobile down with a frown.
"That disappointed to see me?" she joked with a smile. After a moment of hesitation, Jack admitted, "Alice hasn't phoned me back."
"I thought things went well in Italy," Gwen said and didn't understand.
"I thought they did, too. I don't know what's going on with her. She said she wanted to be in Iefan's life," Jack spoke and rubbed his son's back. Gwen sat down in a chair and wished she could do something. The only thing she knew to do was distraction.
"Have you looked at that file I sent you yet?" she asked and watched his professional demeanour reappear.

Rhi lay on the couch. She felt tired. However, she also felt guilty for keeping it from Jack. As she was signing the forms about what she wanted to be done if someone went wrong, she thought about how everyone would feel. Johnny and the children knew she was having a procedure, but Jack was in the dark. She reached for her mobile and phoned him.
"Can you come over right away?" she asked and heard him say yes. She was tempted to do as he had done with a large public space yet she didn't have the energy for that. Rhi waited for Jack to let himself in.
"Modi!" Iefan yelled and ran to her, throwing himself on her.
Not on the stomach, she pleaded in her head and patted her legs which wouldn't be so bad.
"Have you had an ultrasound yet? Or photos?" Jack asked with a smile. She took a breath and gathered her courage.
"I'm not...I'm not pregnant," Rhi spoke, "Actually, it could be cancer."
Jack looked like she had slapped him. He blinked and stared at her as though it didn't compute.
"What?" he asked.
"I had a biopsy and they're going to tell me next week whether it was benign or malignant," she stated and busied herself with tickling Iefan rather than looking at Jack.
"But...but if it is, it's early, right? It'll be fine?" Jack asked.
"Yeah, I'm sure it will be," Rhi spoke and telling him made her feel a little better like it would all work out.

David walked through the door and his mum gave him a confused expression.
"You didn't say you were coming tonight," she said with Iefan in her arms.
"I did, you said you would fix dinner," he reminded her and she shook her head. She'd forgotten. It was fine. She'd just had the biopsy the day before. Still, there must not be any news if she wasn't mentioning it.
"How about I treat everyone to dinner tonight?" he suggested and she shook her head.
"You're just a University student," she pointed out, "and I don't really feel like going out."
"Take away then?" he asked and she nodded with a smile.
"If you insist," she said and he waited for everyone else to tell him what they wanted before calling.
************************************************************
"You're just adorable, you know that?" Gwen asked Iefan as he stood in her sitting room. Once a month or so, she'd invite Jack and Iefan to dinner with her family.
"With his genes, how could he not be?" Jack asked with a grin. Gwen rolled her eyes although it was true. Ianto had been quite fit and she'd be lying if she said Jack had never tempted her.
"How about you show Jack the picture your teacher liked so well?" Rhys suggested to their son who ran to the kitchen to take it off the refridgerator. Iefan ran after him and Gwen was glad the meals went a lot better than that first dinner in this house with Jack. It was still hard to believe that Jack would have been more than a couple of months gone at that point. They just thought it was grief causing those symptoms and languor.
"Tomorrow, you're still having the surprise party?" Jack asked and the couple nodded.
"Poor lad thinks we've forgot. We haven't mentioned it all," Rhys spoke with a chuckle.
"Eight years old," Gwen whispered and shook her head. It seemed like yesterday.

Rhi held Johnny's hand with all her might. She didn't want to go through this by herself. The doctor should be coming along any moment. Then, the door opened. Johnny stood up out of habit.
"Hi, you must be Johnny?" the doctor asked and when he nodded, she added, "I'm Dr. Fallon, your wife's oncologist. I have the results."
She sat down and Johnny did as well.
"It is cancer. It's also spread more than we thought it would. We had you take some more scans before the biopsy and there are now recognizable tumors in both ovaries and your uterus. I'm going to recommend a hysterectomy followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy," the doctor spoke, "I would put it at Stage Two with your cancer cells looking like grade three. It's very serious, but with this plan of surgery and multiple therapies, I think we should be looking at a positive result."
Rhi wanted to strangle her. A positive result would be that she lives, not some shit medical jargon. Johnny took both her hands and held them tight. She had fucking cancer. Rhi studied the tile pattern on the floor as the doctor continued, "I want the surgery to happen as soon as possible, within the next seven days. We don't have to discuss everything right now, but you'll stay in hospital after the surgery and we'll start the radiation therapy. If you react well, we'll be able to release you and you can come to hospital for your appointments while staying at home."
She supposed that was good as Johnny held her hands tighter.
"You can always call me or here for any questions. Do you have any right now?" Dr. Fallon asked and she shook her head. Rhi couldn't think of anything except the word "cancer" over and over and over.
"Do you have some of those pamphlets?" Johnny asked, "Maybe if we could take some home."
"Of course, I'll make sure you have some when you schedule the surgery," she said with a nod. Johnny nodded as if to mimic her. Rhi just wanted to go home.

Alice watched Lucia play on the teeter totter with a younger child. Then, she sat down on the bench and Thomas sat beside her, but it felt like he was a million miles away. She went for his hand as he had done a couple of weeks before. He hesitated before taking it.
"Was today good?" he asked and Alice nodded. Alice hadn't received any complaints against Lucia. Then, she glanced back to see Lucia standing up on the apparatus.
"Lucia! No!" she yelled and they both stood up.
"I'll get her," Thomas spoke and Alice shook her head.
"I can get her," she insisted.
"No," Thomas said in a firm voice that she wasn't used to and picked their daughter up. The other child seemed very pleased with the rescue. Thomas spoke in rapid Italian with an angry tone and Lucia went off to sulk.
"I could have taken care of that," Alice told him when he came back.
"I know," he said although he didn't sound convincing.
"Don't you trust me?" she asked in a low voice. Thomas bit his lip and looked at the ground. It was an eternity before he admitted, "No."
