The Return of a Familiar Suit

Rhi walked the halls without anyone questioning her since it was a dream. There was no longer the road and carpark in front of the hospital. It had been replaced by the play area where she learned about Iefan and had last seen Ianto...

Ianto was standing by the swings. She ran and was next to him in a second.

"Oh, Rhi," he said with a smile and wrapped his arms around her. It was a real hug where her feet left the ground for a second. Ianto hadn't been a hugger before.

"Am I dead?" she asked because it was the only reason she could comprehend for why he was hugging her. The surgery must not have gone as well as she thought.

"No, I should have done that a long time ago," he spoke, "but it was never a good time. For so long, you hated me."

"No, no, I didn't hate you, never," Rhi argued and shook her head.

"You did, you hated that I died, that I got myself killed and never really explained anything. I left that responsibility to Jack and he left you, too," Ianto said, "and it wasn't until you found out about Iefan that you really let it go."

He was right. It was what she didn't like to admit.

"He's a good boy, isn't he?" Ianto asked just like a proud parent, "Jack needs him and you."

"I'm the older sister. I was supposed to die first and then you," she said while placing her palms on his pinstriped waistcoat.

"When did I ever do what was expected of me by everyone else? It wasn't my nature," Ianto quipped with mischief in his blue eyes. They were so much like Iefan's.

"Except with Torchwood, but I know you did it for David and Mica...it's just hard," she said and he nodded. She started hearing hospital sounds and knew she was waking up.

"I love you," she said and wished she had said it more often when he was alive.

"I love you, too," he said before hugging her again, "Give Iefan a kiss for me, but don't tell Jack about this."

As he faded from her view, she tried to remember everything she'd forgotten: how much taller he was from her, the tiny wrinkles here and there and the way his arms had felt.

Mica sat in the hallway, spinning her mobile on the empty plastic seat beside her. She wasn't allowed in the room during the radiotherapy and she couldn't stand waiting in her mum's hospital room with her father. The device clattered to a stop and she spun it again. Mica didn't feel like reading or talking or anything. She didn't want to think at all, just watch the spinning plastic and metal. They said it was safe and would help her mum. She hoped they were right.

Rhi was tired but she would pretend in front of Jack and Iefan. She'd try to be fine with plenty of energy.

"Come here, come here, Iefan," she said and pat the space beside her on the bed.

"You...you don't have to do this," Jack spoke.

"No, it's fine," she argued as he climbed up. She kissed Iefan on the cheek and whispered, "That's from your daddy."

It had been four days since Ianto had appeared to her, but the first time Iefan had seen her. Jack had seemed apprehensive about coming to visit. She supposed the hospital wouldn't have the best memories for him and Rhi wondered why she couldn't tell Jack that she saw Ianto.

"Jack, when was the last time you saw Ianto?" she asked because that could clear things up.

"Two months ago," he uttered and played with his coat, "Even if I don't die, I thought he could at least visit me in a dream. I don't know what's wrong."

"I'm sure he has his reasons," Rhi spoke and ran a hand through Iefan's curls.

Alice had a craving for Neroli's best gelato and since her student had canceled his appointment, she had plenty of time. A lot of her students had been canceling their appointments, but she hoped it was only temporary. However, an old woman gave her a dirty look as she walked into Neroli's little cafe. What was going on? She rubbed her growing bump and tried to relax. Soon, she would be having gelato and that would make everything feel better.

Does Neroli have an important client in the back? It had been fifteen minutes and no one appeared to ask what she wanted.

"It's no good. You could wait there all day and he will never come," said Carlo who was sweeping the floor.

"Why?" she asked, confused. She had always been on good terms with Neroli before. Sunset colored the cafe in orange and red.

"We know that Thomas is living with Annie. She tell everyone. Thomas is well-liked so they think...must be your fault. Neroli no want to serve you anymore." Carlo explained and Alice clutched the table for support. This was why they'd been canceling their lessons. Would she be able to earn enough from teaching Italian to immigrants or live off her savings?

For a brief instant, she wanted to kill Annie, sister-in-law or not.

David was reading in the park for his next class in an hour. He reminded himself that his mum seemed to be responding well to the radiotherapy. In fact, they were also going to put her on Chemotherapy. His dad had tried to explain that both should make everything go away and she was at home now. Maybe he and Emyr were making a mistake about things. He played with his ring and ended up reading some of the sentences two or three times from his lack of concentration. Of course, the park wasn't the most restful spot either. It was better than the libraries that made him feel claustrophobic but it meant a lot of background noise.

"Stop looking at her!" yelled a voice several metres away. David looked up to see a bloke full of muscles glaring at a bloke that David recognised from orientation. He couldn't be much more than eleven stone, if that.

"I...I wasn't," the smaller man stammered.

"You're still looking at her," the muscled man complained and David noticed a blonde off to the side. She crossed her arms and leaned against a tree.

"I'm...I'm not," the other man said and David remembered his name was Freddie. Then, the other man took a swing at Freddie, knocking him down.

"Call 999!" someone yelled while the blonde screamed, "Forman, don't!"

Forman ignored her and hit him again. David didn't have a lot of faith in the police coming in time so he dropped his book and ran over. When Forman went for a third hit, David kicked his ankle.

"Piss off, will ya?" Forman retorted and kicked at him. David dodged and shook his head.

"No, this is all barmy and you know it," he argued and stood his ground. Freddie was trying to crawl away.

"Forman, let's go," the blonde pleaded and came closer when there was a lull in action.

"No, I know this daftie. He's a poof trying to teach me a lesson. We'll leave but first, I have to do this business," Forman spoke and tried to punch him. David leaned out of the way before kicking his crotch. David's foot was grasped in strong arms and he had to fight to keep his balance. There was only one thing to do. He jumped and kicked Forman in the knee, catching him off-guard. David was dropped to the ground. Then, he pulled at his trousers, but the cloth was heavy and secured with a tight belt. It wasn't budging. He heard Forman think it. However, David was too slow and Forman's fist connected with his face. His nose hurt like shit and he started to feel something trickle down his lips. It tasted metallic. He elbowed Forman in the chest except it felt like hitting a wall and the other laughed. He was running out of options because he couldn't bear to just walk away. Forman would probably do it again to someone else. He swung his head back and hit his forehead against Forman's face. They both groaned at the collision.

"Forman! Forman! Oh my God! Your face!" the blonde shrieked and David saw that Forman appeared to have a broken nose, too. Then, there were police sirens. Forman was going to run and David didn't want that to happen. He grabbed one of his legs and pulled.
