Dress-Up

March 26, 2018

The next day, Jack stood in Alice's room while she made her bed. He was glad she was in such a good mood and it was about to get better. Iefan was playing with Lula in his room.

"Dad, who's that other man in Iefan's baby book? The young man with the bow tie," she said, fluffing up a pillow.

"The Doctor," he replied and she gave him a quizzical look before straightening her necklace.

"No, you said the man in the suit was the Doctor. This person is young and looks utterly different," she stated.

"The Doctor is an alien. He can't die either. Only instead of looking the same when he comes back, like I do, he has a different face and body," Jack tried to explain.

"Then, how do you know it's really him?"

"He has a spaceship and it's always the same, like those blue police boxes they had before you were born," Jack spoke.

"Isn't a police box a bit small for traveling through space?" she said with a teasing smile.

"It's bigger on the inside, travels through time, too," he told her and saw that it was the wrong thing to do. She frowned.

"If he has a time machine, he could have gone back and stopped it all," she uttered, "Why didn't he?"

"I don't know," Jack lied and saw the disbelief in her brown eyes. He didn't want to explain it all right this minute. Then, her mobile rang. Inwardly, Jack sighed in relief.

"Thomas! Oh, I'm so glad to hear from you. Mi manchi," she said and he walked out of the room to give her privacy. His son-in-law had great timing. She'd remember, but she wouldn't ask him about it. He heard Iefan giggling from Jack's bedroom and wondered what he was up to. When he stepped inside, Iefan had opened all his drawers and the closet. Clothes were strewn everywhere. He should have been mad, but his son was grinning and adorable. Lula was beside him wearing Iefan's winter hat and scarf. Faba was wearing cufflinks placed to look like earrings and Iefan...Iefan wore his nappy along with one of Jack's blue shirts with the sleeves tied around his chest to stay on and was standing in an extra pair of Jack's shoes. He'd managed to attach one brace to the top of his nappy and on top of his head was a red UNIT cap. For a moment, Jack couldn't help thinking of Ianto wearing the same cap.

"Taddy, ow I ook?" the toddler asked, holding up his hands. Jack took him in his arms and answered, "Handsome, of course."

He kissed him on the cheek before adding, "But we're going to have to clean this up now."

Iefan pouted and shook his head.

"I don't like it either. Your dad was a lot better with this stuff," Jack spoke.

"Dad, Thomas thinks I should have Lucia. She misses me so, but we talked," Alice said, coming closer, "Mostly about Lucy and the baby but still...it's a start."

Jack was so happy for her.

"But...I can't fly over to get her and she's too young to fly alone and...I'm not sure if I can see Thomas again right now or if he really wants to see me," Alice rambled and her pregnancy hormones kicked in so she started crying.

"Oh, Alice, don't worry, I'll go," Jack volunteered.

"Really?"

"Yes, but you'll have to watch Iefan because you know how much he hates being away from me lately," he spoke, "I can't put him through two plane rides so close together."

"Right," Alice agreed and straightened the cap about to fall off Iefan's head, "We have fun together."

"It can be your birthday present," Jack suggested and she smiled as though assuming he'd forget.

"In just a week or two, I'll be able to hug her again," she said and rubbed her belly.

"How about tomorrow?" Jack asked and watched her surprised expression.

"It'd probably be the birthday present she'd want most, too," he pointed out.

"But it's so last minute..."

"I have my ways," Jack told her.

****************************************************

Alice sat with Iefan on the couch.

"Taddy?" Iefan asked again and pointed to the door.

"No, not until tomorrow. He's picking up your niece so he has to ride on a plane where they stop in Amsterdam before landing in Nice. You were in Nice last year when you rode on the plane. Remember that?" Alice asked and looked at him.

"No," he said and shook his head. Alice laughed.

"Your taddy will be back tomorrow afternoon. It'll be here before you know it," she told him even though she knew it would be no help. Time seemed to take forever when you were a kid and go by so fast when you were an adult. It was nearly nine years since everything had happened; didn't seem possible.

Iefan pat her stomach as he must have seen her do many times.

"I'm huge, aren't I?" she asked.

"Huge," Iefan repeated.

"I look like I might as well be carrying twins," Alice said and grimaced, "Older mums like me; they're more likely to have twins. The doctor warned me all about that and it was such a scary thought, but we tried all the same."

She played with Iefan's curls.

"To tell you the truth, I was so relieved that it's going to be a girl. I wasn't sure I wanted another boy. I thought he might remind me of Steven all the time. Steven was your nephew but...but he died before you were born," she spoke; saying the words aloud that she could never tell her husband or Jack. She felt ashamed about having such thoughts. It should have been a blessing to be pregnant in the first place without worrying about anything more than the baby being healthy. At least, Iefan couldn't make any judgements.

"Someday, you'll learn how odd it is for your sister to be over forty years older than you, but I'm glad he has you. I'm glad you're my brother. You even look a bit like Steven, but I don't...think of it all the time when I'm around you. It's getting better. Dad says he's in Heaven with your daddy. I hope that's true," Alice said and hugged him.

"Daddy," Iefan stated and pointed to the photo of his parents on the wall. She wondered what Ianto had been like. Jack was so different now. They all were, but for the most part, he had changed for the better. He was a much better father now than he had ever been before.

******************************************************

David took one last look over their flat to see if they missed anything, but it was too late. The buzzer was ringing. He let in his mum, dad and sister into the flat and studied his mum. She did look much better with the new medication.

"How's university?" she asked with a keen expression.

"It's good," he replied and meant it. He was trying not to let everything get to him as much.

"I'm trying to watch him," Emyr said with a wink. His family never had found out about the arrest.

"Good b...good man," she told him and pat his shoulder.

********************************************************

Alice' sleep was interrupted and she blinked her eyes. Someone had just crawled into bed with her. After a few unsuccessful attempts, the puppy jumped onto the bed as well.

"Sissy," Iefan whispered, "Sissy, sissy, sissy..."

"What is it?" she asked him.

"Taddy now?" Iefan asked and she shook her head.

"Not yet, but it is my birthday," she said and tickled his belly. Iefan giggled.

"And we have to go shopping because Lucia will need a seat for the car like you do, but her seat will look different," Alice spoke and looked at the clock, "but it's two in the morning so I think we should sleep for now."

When she woke up the next time with a very full bladder, Iefan was no longer in the bed and Lula woke up with a sleepy bark.

"He has to be in the house," Alice tried to reassure herself and went for the loo. Iefan was already there with the nail scissors. Blond curls lay on the tiled floor around him.

"Oh, your taddy is not going to like this," she said and shook her head.

"Cut," Iefan stated and pointed at his head. She took away the small scissors and put them away. Then, she took out her mobile.

"I'm sorry about this, dad," she spoke and hit the entry in her address book.
