Fun with Airport Security
Jack sat at the dining room table with breakfast laid out before him. It turned out Thomas had learned some things in Alice's absence. There was the sound of running and Lucia came around the corner.
"Papa!" Lucia exclaimed before seeing Jack, "What he doing here?"
"He's going to take you to mama in Cardiff," Thomas explained and Jack seemed to be forgotten.
"Mama? I get to see mama?" Lucia asked.
"Si, buon compleanno!" Thomas told her.
"Happy Birthday, Lucia," Jack spoke and she watched him with cautious brown eyes.
"Eat and we'll pack. Lucia has never been on a plane before. Won't that be exciting?" Thomas asked his daughter with a smile. He scooped some eggs on her plate.
"Will the baby be there?" she asked and he leaned down to her level.
"The baby is not coming until this summer," Thomas spoke in a soft voice.
"The baby is why mama left," Lucia said and grabbed a rasher from another plate.
"No, no, her leaving had nothing to do with the baby," Thomas told her and shook his head. Jack popped a piece of melon wrapped in ham in his mouth. He wished he could help, but she didn't seem to like him.
"It was me," Lucia said in a dejected tone.
"It was not. Mama leaving had nothing to do with you or the baby. It was between mama and I. We needed some time apart...
"Then, come with me," Lucia begged and reminded Jack of when Alice was the same age.
"No, mama and I need more time, but your...uncle Jack will take good care of you," Thomas said as she stared at him a minute. She frowned and stabbed her eggs with a fork.
"We'll have a party before you leave with all my family and when you get there, maybe mama will have a party with all her family," Thomas suggested and Lucia shrugged.
"You can play with Iefan again," Jack added and she stabbed her eggs again. He hoped they would learn to get along.
"But Jack said mama had a special message for you," Thomas spoke and nodded towards Jack. Did he really want Jack to do it? However, he nodded again and mouthed the word, yes.
"Your mum loves you a lot," Jack said and leaned over to hug her. She tensed in surprised and he kissed her on the cheek for a second. She rubbed her cheek and made a face before picking up one of the ham-wrapped melons.
Somehow, the hours passed. He received an updated photo from Alice. Iefan had much shorter hair and he wasn't surprised to see new blue nail varnish on his toenails. He missed being away from his son for so long after spending so much time together the past month. Iefan looked so much older with the haircut.
All of the Italian Morettis came for her birthday party. He met everyone. Everyone seemed really nice except Annie. Thomas' sister didn't appear to like him. After a lot more food and the presents had been opened, Jack put on his coat while Thomas made Lucia ready. The drive to airport was quiet: Lucia played with her new video game machine rather than speaking to him.
"We have a new puppy named Lula. You should have a lot of fun with her," Jack spoke and watched for some reaction. Lucia still ignored him. This continued until they reached airport security.
"You have permission to take this child to Britain?" asked the woman with a Scottish accent.
"I'm her uncle," he said and peeked at his passport. It was a regular civilain version. He had another one if she kept this up.
"Are you her guardian?" the woman asked.
"What's that?" Lucia asked. Jack took the woman aside and whispered, "I'm really her grandfather but she doesn't know that."
"Liar!" Lucia yelled and Jack groaned.
"Sir, I'm beginning to think I should detain both of you," the woman stated in a stern tone. Jack took out his other identification.
"I'm also a member of Torchwood. You can call that in and they'll confirm it," he said and put it down next to the others.
"Well, Mr. Harkness, this all seems to be in order. Have a nice flight," she said and handed the passports back to him.

Alice paced the floor. They were due back any minute. Her dad had sent a text that they were on their way. The corner of her eyes caught movement on the couch.
"No, Iefan, that's Lucia's present," she told him and motioned for him to stop messing with it.
"Lucy?" he asked and she nodded. Alice heard the sound of a car and hurried to the front door to see him parking the car. As soon as Jack opened the door, Lucia bounded out and saw her.
"Mama!" she yelled and ran to her. Alice kneeled down as best she could and enveloped her arms around her little girl. She had missed this so much.
"Papa said I have to do two things," she said and held up her fingers.
"Oh, what are they?" Alice asked with a grin.
"One," Lucia spoke and kissed her mum on the cheek.
"Two," the girl continued and took a jewelry box out. Inside was a silver cross.
"Like mine," Lucia said and pointed to her neck, "Put it on."
Alice didn't want to explain how she wasn't sure what she believed. She knew she wanted to believe in a heaven with Steven and Iefan's dad and her mum, but she wasn't sure about everything else. Still, her daughter was waiting with a curious expression. Alice took out the necklace and put it on. Time seemed to pass by so fast until it was the next morning. She was on the couch with Iefan on one side and Lucia on the other. The baby kicked and she took their hands to put over her stomach. After another kick, Lucia's brown eyes grew very wide and her mouth was open in shock. Iefan giggled and pointed at her bump.
"Boy!" he declared and she shook her head.
"No, girls can kick, too," she said.
"Boy," he repeated and Lucia spat, "Shut up!"
"Lucia! Don't say that to him. It is not nice," she reprimanded her daughter. Iefan just clutched Faba, not caring. Why had he said that? No, the baby was a girl. She was sure of it. She had seen that on the ultrasound herself.
"Can we go?" Lucia asked and leaned her body against Alice.
"No, we can't. I have to watch Iefan while his taddy is away, but why don't you play with Iefan?" she suggested and wasn't taking 'no' for an answer. She stood up and started walking towards the kitchen. Lula ran to the back door and started barking to be let out.
**************************************************
"I'm not sure how this works," Jack admitted as he lay on a couch in Selene's office. She rechecked her recorder and said, "Talk about whatever is most comfortable."
None of it was comfortable: that was kind of the point of avoiding things. Drinking had helped with that. He thought he had taken a big step just by making this meeting and showing up. After a few more minutes of silence, Selene suggested, "How about your childhood? Let's start with that. It wasn't Earth, was it?"
"No, it was this little planet in the Isop Galaxy. It was cheap to move there. They thought they could have a new life away from all the crime they were raised around on the Starship UK, but there was a reason why it was so cheap. Nothing was established there. When I was born, the hospital hadn't even been built yet," he explained and she repositioned her glasses.
"Where were you born then?" she asked.
"In the bathroom, there was a medic at that point," Jack spoke, "I don't remember a lot. We were happy. There weren't a lot of other children. Once a week, we'd go to market and I would see other kids there. We'd play games. When we were four, we would start having school on...well, it was a bit like a telly but with all the stuff like a computer. Then, when I was six, my brother was born."
She sat up straighter at the last sentence. She'd read the Martyn book and all existing files.
"Tell me about him. Were you jealous about having to share you parents' time and attention?" she asked and put her fingers together.
"No, I loved him. I loved him so much. I finally had a playmate. We did everything together, but the reason it had been uninhabited became clear. My parents found out there was an alien species that claimed the planet was their's. They'd come every so often to burn the settlements and kill and...kidnap," he paused and put his hands to his face. It was like he was there again.

Then, we see the flashback in the following episode about how the survivors of Canary Wharf; very possibly suicidal and definitely suffering PTSD...it's a wonder Ianto was so well-adjusted as he was really...
Anyway, to those victims/survivors, Jack says simply, "not my responsibility." Thus, he perpetuates Torchwood's cycle of silence and self-destruction. Owen was definitely no prepared for any sort of counseling...he still needed it himself after Katie.
