The Easter Aftermath

The sound of a puppy puking filled the air. Jack sighed and was glad that Lula was outside.

"That's because you fed her chocolate," he told his son with a glare. However, Lucia was running towards the recovering animal with chocolate eggs in her hand. Both children had plenty of sweets left over from Sunday.

"Lucy! Don't you dare! You're not a baby, you're a big girl!" Alice yelled at her. The girl stopped and lookd back at her mother in surprise. Jack felt his shirt being yanked and Iefan was in front of him.

"No baby," the toddler said, pointing to himself. He was frowning and Jack picked him up.

"That's not what she meant. We know you're a big boy, but Lucy is bigger. We expect more things from her," he tried to explain and hugged him. Iefan leaned into Jack's embrace and sucked Faba's foot. Then, he took it out to ask, "Modi?"

Rhi still didn't want Iefan to see her. He understood her reasoning. It was still hard for him to see her shaved head and tired eyes, but he also hated how Iefan couldn't understand why she was always sick. The toddler begged to see her ever day. Maybe it would do her some good to see him.

"Do you want to see Modi?" he asked Iefan who nodded with enthusiasm. "Let's go."

David looked up from Star Wars on the telly when the door opened.

"I thought you were staying on campus," he commented as Emyr dumped his rucksack on the floor.

"I was, but then I was thinking to myself, I can think of better ways to spend an hour between classes," Emyr spoke in that particular tone that David enjoyed so much.
"Yeah?" David asked and unbuttoned the first couple on his shirt.

"Yeah," Emyr agreed and kicked off his shoes before joining David on the couch. He saw Emyr mess with his mobile before sticking it back in his pocket. Then, David tugged on Emyr's jumper and pulled him close for a kiss, easing the red wool up the other's back. The smell of the reheated pizza he had for lunch filled the air. Emyr's fingers ran through David's curls before they broke apart so that David could throw his jumper off. Seconds later, Emyr was undoing the rest of David's buttons

Mica heard a car engine outside and looked out her window to see who had arrived. It was Jack which wasn't that surprising, but then, he opened a second car door and Iefan jumped out. The toddler hadn't been to their house in nearly a month. Jack knocked on the door and Mica snuck to the landing. Her mum walked to the door and opened it to let him in.

"Jack" she spoke and Mica could hear how happy she was to see him.

"Modi!" Iefan exclaimed and ran into the house past her mum. Her mum was wearing a shirt and jeans with her head wrapped in a flowered bandanna. Then, Iefan turned around in confusion.

"Modi?" he asked and Mica went down a couple of steps. Jack was shocked and her mum appeared sad.

"Modi?" Iefan repeated. Her mum knelt down.

"I am your Modi. I just look a little strange," she said and held out her arms. Iefan took a few steps and stared at her. Then, he looked up at Jack.

"I told you she was sick. She just looks a little different. It's still Aunt Rhi," he spoke and Mica felt her eyes tearing up. Since she lived with her every day, sometimes she'd forget how much her mom had changed until she saw a photo or noticed how delivery boy looked at her. It was going to be fine though. She'd finish her treatments and they could forget it ever happened. Mica realised she actually missed her mum's cooking. Despite changing her medications; her mum still wasn't up for much more than opening cans, making sandwiches or meals requiring buttons. She was also still avoiding the neighbours. Mica and her father had made up so many excuses that she knew they had to be suspicious. She was tired of it and maybe Kellyn Bershad could help. Kellyn was the biggest gossip on the street.

Iefan took a few more steps, touched Rhi's hand and stared at her some more.

"Modi?" he asked in a different tone and her mum nodded. He ran the rest of the way into her arms and she hugged him.

"Oh, Iefan, I've missed you a lot," Rhi spoke and kissed his cheek. Mica crept down a few more steps so she was able to hear her mum add, "I can see your taddy in you, but I forgot how much you resemble your father."

"Yes, he does," Jack agreed with a nod.

Gwen bit into the crunchy taco shell. Hot sauce dribbled down her chin as she felt the delicate fish fall apart in her mouth. She leaned over her paper plate so nothing would fall on her shirt.

"Mmmm," she said in appreciation and Selene laughed.

"Selene needs to cook for us every day," Bernie mumbled with his mouth half-full.
"Then one of you would have to learn how to take autopsies and collect specimens," Selene spoke and smiled as Bernie and Lois both made faces. Gwen wasn't about to volunteer either. She had done her share over the years and they had quickly lost their sense of fun.

"I've never had them with fish before," Lois commented before scooping up some of the fallen toppings with a piece of tortilla shell.

"My dad used to claim he invented them. I thought that was so cool," Selene explained, "Then, after he died, mum said he'd discovered them online when I was little."
Gwen gave her a little smile but she never caught Selene being sad about her parents being dead. Instead, she went back to eating and Gwen's mobile went off.

Somehow, David and Emyr had made it to their bed where they lay naked and half-asleep. He yawned; that wouldn't do for his afternoon class. David got off the bed and was almost past the threshold when he heard Emyr say, "I think I want a coke."

"I think we still have one or two Cokes left," David said, turning back to him.

"You always know just what I want without me having to say anything," Emyr spoke. But..but he had talked...except David didn't know for sure. This had happened before. He'd heard things people hadn't actually said aloud or he just knew things. David continued into the kitchen but it still weighed on his mind. He'd been thinking about it since babysitting Iefan and Lucia. Since he'd first met Iefan, he'd been forced to accept that the boy wasn't normal. However, Jack wasn't normal so that didn't seem so odd. Lucia, on the other hand, she was related to Jack yet Alice seemed normal. If Lucia could hear thoughts like Iefan seemed to and that seemed to be what David could do, what did that make David? He grabbed the cokes and walked back into the bedroom. Emyr was zipping up his jeans.

"Emyr, do you ever hear things people say before they say them?" he asked and popped open his can. Emyr gave him an odd look.

"Are you getting sick?" he asked and David shook his head. It wasn't normal then.

Rhi was happy that Iefan was finally treating her like his Modi again. It broke her heart that he didn't recognize her at first. It validated her reasoning for not letting him visit her, but now that he was smiling at her and making her play with him, she was glad that Jack went against her wishes. The four of them had sat down for tea with Iefan on her lap. Even Mica had come down which confirmed Rhi's suspicion that she had lied about how sick she was to miss school. She'd stayed home because Johnny had to work and Mica thought someone should stay home with Rhi. Rhi wasn't an invalid. She was much better than before she fell down the stairs. Her appetite still wasn't the best though.

"Too good for a biscuit, mum?" Mica asked as if they both didn't know what she really meant. She didn't think Rhi ate enough.

"I'm fine," Rhi said and drank her cup.

"Vroom! Vroom!" Iefan exclaimed and held the biscuit like a toy plane. He flew it at Rhi's mouth as she had done to him many times before. It was too cute to refuse. She took a bite.

They should be happy that all they had was a puking dog on their hands and if ate chocolate. Chocolate can be deadly to dogs and cats. I'm glad Iefan got to see his Aunt Rhi again. You wrote that scene well. Good job on this story.
