While I agree, in general, that women do not need men (or anyone else) romantically in order to feel fulfilled, I don't think that was the right ending for this movie. I definitely don't believe that she was happy. Spending her entire life working and then the man who saved her life, took care of her... dies, and she doesn't shed a tear. Which I realize, she might not have for her father either. It certainly didn't seem like it. But that's hardly human, and just... definitely proves she was an unhappy person.

You're also perfectly right that in any other movie, Mattie WOULD have ended up with LaBoeuf.
