The Same in Any Language

Cadence

“Gwen! Gwen!!” came a voice and she began to snap out of it, sobbing into Rhys’ arms, “Gwen, it wasn’t your fault.”

But if she had just been faster or been able to help Martha or they hadn’t been stuck in the cells or…there must have been something she could have done.

“It wasn’t your fault!” Rhys spoke, shaking her so that all she could do was look in his brown eyes, “It was not your fault.”

“I know, but…”

“It…was…not…your…fault,” he spoke in a very slow, deliberate manner, “I want you to say it.”

She didn’t want to. The words died in her throat, but her husband’s face was so concerned and desperate that she didn’t want to let him down. If only the nightmares would stop…

“It was not my fault.”

“I want you to say it again,” he pleaded so she did, “It was not my fault…it was not my fault…it was not my fault…but it hurts Rhys, it hurts.”

“I know it does, I’m not the one that worked with them all the time and I…even I miss them, remember when my shipping computers went down with some virus and Tosh fixed it? Wouldn’t even let me pay her…so we took her out for dinner.”

Gwen nodded, trying to remember the good times.

“And we’ll never forget Owen giving us the most memorable of the wedding gifts,” said Rhys with a smirk.

“The Kama Sutra,” she added although it was always a bit odd discussing Owen around Rhys when Rhys had no idea about the period she cheated on him with Owen.

“Who would have thought that Jack would give the thoughtful gift?” he asked, amused, “or did Ianto pick it out for him?”

Gwen almost smiled before defending him, “Jack has his moments. I think he came up with it on his own.”

“Maybe we should have a holiday…we only had a few days for our honeymoon,” Rhys suggested, holding her shoulders with a gentle grip. Maybe he was right. It sounded like a similar suggestion to what Ianto had said.

“I think that’s a great idea,” she agreed and they kissed. Then, her husband got a look on his face before asking, “Did you give Ianto one of your bridesmaids’ bouquets?”

“Well, he certainly did more for me than any of my girls…he deserved it, why?” she asked, giving him a stare.

“I wonder if he planted the myrtle,” he answered with a cheeky grin.

“And if it grew…” she added, returning the grin while getting out of bed because there was no way she’d sleep again tonight, “We could check during the dinner party next month.”

“Forgot about that, should have had it on the 17th or 18th between the two,” he said, rolling out of bed himself and she was impressed. He’d become good at remembering her birthday, but he’d just remembered Ianto’s as well.

“Well, this way, we can go away for my birthday,” she reminded him and he nodded before she looked at their wedding present from Jack. It was one of the few really good pictures from the wedding. She thought he had taken it himself: Gwen just closing her mouth after laughing and Rhys smiling at her and it was held by a simple, elegant frame. Ianto had given them a love spoon. It was two gestures that she would love to return in kind.

“Wouldn’t that be something though? If they did marry?” she inquired aloud and Rhys came from behind, putting his arms around her.

“I doubt more things could go wrong than ours…at least Jack wouldn’t be harboring an alien life form…”

“Actually, Jack is an alien…”

“No, he’s not,” Rhys scoffed, letting her go, “He looks like us.”

“He looks like us but he wasn’t born on Earth,” she informed him, “He wasn’t even born in the 20th century.”

“What? Like that time agency thing?” he questioned and she saw that he was trying to keep up.

“Exactly, Jack used to be a time agent and somehow ended up here,” Gwen continued, “Martha told me that he was born on the Boeshane Peninsula in the Isop Galaxy in the 51st century.”

“How does Martha know all this?”

“I don’t know,” she answered; the question had occurred to her before, “They seem closer than I realised when I first met her.”

“So, Jack’s an alien?” Rhys half-questioned, half stated, drawing her closer again.

“Yep,” she answered.

“I suppose that makes sense…the team protecting the Earth from aliens being led by an alien,” he spoke and grinned. Gwen just shook her head, but they both started laughing and she playfully smacked his bottom.

************************************************

James groaned and tried to shut his eyes to the increasing light, but it was no use. Morgen was still sound asleep and he looked around at the bedroom that he hadn’t had the time or inclination to study last night. The furniture was sparse and well-worn, but he was struck with the number of photographs around. Ianto had a few here and there in the whole house while Morgen had at least one on every piece of furniture and some on the walls…and they were all of the same person. It was a girl; from birth but nothing past age…age…well, he was never good with small children so he’d guess six or so. Dark curls framed her face that contained light brown eyes, like Morgen’s.

“That is Cadence, my daughter,” explained the younger man, walking up to him without a single piece of clothing on, “Cady is the reason I always make sure a condom’s used…you just never know.”

“You must be very proud,” James stated, guessing from all the pictures.

“Oh, I am, she turns five in three months…five! I just can’t believe it,” he said with a grin, “feels like just yesterday when I could hold her whole body in my left arm.”

There was a moment where he seemed lost in the moment before Morgen suggested, “Let me cook you breakfast…it won’t be waffles or anything like that, but I can do eggs and porridge.”

“I would love that,” the other answered when there was a shrill, discordant tone. It took the Welshman running for his jeans for James to remember that it must be a mobile phone.

“Hullo, what is it? No, I can’t…you know my schedule…what about your mum?” he asked into the phone, ”No…fine, what time should I be there?”

James waited for an enlightenment about this behaviour as Morgen kicked the table, sending a worn paperback book flying.

“She always does this, every single fucking time!” the man complained, grabbing his short dark hair, “Cady’s mum can’t find a babysitter and refuses to take her to daycare…she’s odd around strangers…so I’m up. It’s not that I don’t like spending time with her. I do enjoy my time with her, but not at the last fucking moment!”

The younger man took a deep breath and exhaled, “It’ll be fine; it’ll be fine, it’s just one class, I could probably get the notes on the lecture from someone else.”

James opened his mouth to offer some sort of assistance although he wasn’t sure what that could be when Morgen shut it for him, “No, no worries mate, not your fault, you’d rather be dropped off at your place or near work?”

Actually, his flat was close to the Hub and he wasn’t sure if Gwen would be the type to notice his wearing the same suit from yesterday. Ianto would not care and he doubted Martha would notice.

“My answer would be flat,” he replied and Morgen shook his head.

“You are so cute!” he pronounced before a quick kiss, “I’ll call you.”

He did call. It was the next day, but still…however, James wasn’t quite sure on what to make of things. He and Teddy were occasional lovers who knew they would find and marry someone else eventually. Now, men had girlfriends or boyfriends. Was Morgen his boyfriend? Ianto had been absolutely no help in this regard, trying to assure him that things needn’t be labeled. James found it odd that a man who spent his day categorizing every odd bit of alien scrap or event would refuse to do the same with his love life. He received his own answer a few days later. Morgen had invited him for an afternoon picnic at Bute Park near the Gorsedd Stones which Ianto had drawn him a map for. As he was about to consult it again, he heard a high-pitched voice say, “Oh, daddy.” Turning in the direction he heard it, confirmed that it had to be Cady because Morgen was with her.

“James, come over here!” the man called and the older man couldn’t resist a light jog.

“Cady, this is my friend, James,” said Morgan and James tried to be relieved, “James, this is the beautiful daughter I was telling you about.”

The little girl smiled and he tried to as well although it felt odd to be referred to as a friend after having spent more than one night together. Maybe he felt she was too young to understand.

“Dydd da,” she spoke and James had to shake his head.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know any Welsh,” he apologized and she glared at him.

“Twll din pob Sais,” she spat and Morgen’s light brown eyes grew very big.

“Cady!! I know your mum has a foul mouth but I will not have you talking like that…James is a very nice man, understand?” he asked in a persuasive tone. She sat down and in a forced tone, said, “Eisteddwch.”

Not sure what she said, he sat down and his “friend” explained, “She only speaks English with those she likes.”

This did nothing to relieve James’ apprehension that the girl hated him and always would. After an hour or so, it didn’t seem any better even though Morgen spoke, “Don’t worry, it takes awhile.”

“Then, she liked your former friends?”

“Well, no…not yet,” he admitted, “but I have a good feeling about you two.”

Let's Ride the Spaceship!

Next chapter will be uber cute.
