The Dictator
May. 26th, 2012 10:56 pmSo, I generally love Sacha Baron Cohen. It's all my brother's fault as things are usually the fault of brother number one, brother number two, my mom or Joss Whedon or a mix of those four...
My oldest brother got me a copy of Ali G Indahouse in 2002. I had no clue what to expect but it was hilarious and had Martin Freeman. I didn't quite like making fun of Harry Potter during the credits but since the bad guy was then hired to replace Richard Harris as Dumbledore, I wasn't so annoyed. Plus, Bruno is actually one of the sweetest mainstream homosexual romantic comedies I've seen.
Anyway, it's basically Sacha Baron Cohen so I liked it, but if you like, I'll go into more detail.
What?
You want me to sympathize with a guy who keeps saying wildly inappropiate things but wants to rule because he feels democracies don't work so people should just be ruled and he has daddy issues?
Hmm...
Yeah, you're right, I'm totally sold. It's really more complex than the trailers and commercials make it appear. Ben Kingsley, who appears to be Hollywood's new Go To villain, is the dictator's older brother and wants to rule. However, that really isn't possible so he sets it up so one of the dictator's incredibly stupid doubles becomes mistaken for the real dictator while Ben Kingsley tries to kill the real one. However, Ben Kingsley doesn't really want to rule the country to better its people or anything noble, he wants to exploit all their natural resources to foreign companies for a fat profit.
It becomes this lesser of two evils where Ben Kingsley wants to put in a constitutional democracy in order to sell off the oil and mineral rights but the Dictator wants to stop the constitution because his father promised him never to sell out their country like that.
So, do we root for democracy but a ruined and exploited land or do we root for a Dictator who is spoiled and thus, selfish at times?
Also, I need to learn that just because a movie takes place in New York doesn't mean that the Avengers or anyone remotely Marvel related will appear...
Why hello random Edward Norton!
I also loved the dialogue.
"No, I need the beard of a good man, like Castro or Gandalf."
