Dianne Feinstein and Gun Control
Feb. 15th, 2013 01:25 amIn case you think Dianne Feinstein is being "trendy" or "liberal" to want gun control, this is not the case. In the 1970s, she carried a gun for protection. Then, in 1978, she discovered two of her colleagues dying in a pool of their own blood after being shot by a third colleague.
The thing we have to understand is that many people who want limits on guns are doing so because they have lost loved ones. This is no different than the daughter who runs to raise money to fight the cancer that killed her mom. It's no different than the mom who joins MADD because her husband was killed by a drunk driver.
People want to make sure other people don't have to hurt like they do...that they don't have to feel that hole of having someone ripped away from you.
We also have to understand that victims have successfully created and changed laws before from requiring seatbelts to creating OSHA, but perhaps we should look to Prohibition.
Prohibition happened because men were beating and killing women and women had no legal recourse. They didn't know what to do about it anymore but they knew that alcohol made it both more likely and more likely to be worse than usual.
However, Prohibition didn't last. Today, we can legally drink as long as we meet certain conditions.
No, we can't drink whenever and wherever we like with no consequences. We cannot legally drink and drive...this is a danger to the public.
We cannot legally drive above 100 MPH in most areas...this is a danger to the public.
When something is a danger to the public, it has to be restricted; not necessarily outlawed but restricted.
