Since it was the very first business of the show, I was able to watch the big Marvel announcement today on The View. I was hoping for a scene, trailer or other news from Agent Carter which my DVR insists isn't recording until December 30, 2015.
Instead, it was this business about Mjolnir and Thor. I became more enraged and confused the more Whoopi talked. Let me explain.
"For the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman. That's right. Thor is a woman!”
And that's when I started going, Wait a minute...
Because there's ( Wonder Woman )( Rogue )( Storm )and my personal favorite from this year, ( Black Widow )Note that that they all maintain their current physical looks, including hair, only their wardrobe is changed.
Okay, then, they discuss her outfit and how it isn't too bad by comic book standards but again...metal bra. I challenge anyone who's drawn a female in a metal bra to actually wear one. Princess Leia's slave outfit was just that...a slave outfit where no one would care if she ended up with burns and abrasions from the hot metal. I don't even like wearing my shirt that zips up the front when it's too sunny. Having hot metal resting on your boobs is one of the most annoying/borderline painful experiences you could ever get from clothing. If you notice, knights had on tunics and clothing UNDER the armor because of this. So, when Sif or Valkyrie or anyone is drawn this way- metal bra without proper protection underneath, it annoys me.
Then, Whoopi says that the new character looks like her and is a black woman unless she is holding Mjolnir; the utter essence of whitewashing. I now think she was joking but I didn't catch that then and I was pissed that they would allow Mjolnir to transform someone's self that way and make it appear that in order to be worthy, you had to be turned into a blond eyed, blond Caucasian.
I still love SheZow though.
If it wasn't for the blond hair, I'd assume it was Angela.
Okay, here's the other thing that pissed me off. She will still be called Thor because she wields Mjolnir.
THIS MAKES NO SENSE WHATSOEVER!!!!!!
Anyone can be Captain America, Batman, Spider-Man, etc. because it's a TITLE. Thor was named Thor at birth. It's his GIVEN NAME! It's not a title or position. It has nothing to do with who's wielding Mjolnir.
Of course, the fact that Hot Topic had a Valkyrie costume and insisted on calling it "Female Thor" makes so much more sense now.
However, the internet seems to feel that I'm not being a good feminist, that I should want equality at all costs. I don't want equality in the form of gimmicky stunts that make no sense. I wish people were this supportive of Journey into Mystery when it revolved around Sif. Maybe it would still be here. Then, they mentioned on The View how important it is to have good female role models. This is true, so why not bring more of the already established female characters into the MCU?
Think about how awesome they are...
She Hulk- LAWYER!
Captain Marvel -ACTUAL ROCKET SCIENTIST!
Mockingbird -Skilled in combat AND SCIENCE!
Miss Marvel -fighting bad guys in costume and prejudice outside of it.
Hawkeye -Accomplished cellist while still a teen.
