As with all farewells, I will tell my tale. My first familiarity with The Daily Show was reading about it in Entertainment Weekly. Then, my brother bought home a box of stuff he'd recorded at college; vhs tapes of gold, including a tape with this new show called South Park. Almost as treasured as the actual show were the cable ads which included The Daily Show with Craig Kilborn. He seemed funny and I was happy when he moved to The Late, Late Show on CBS. I would get to see him every week night...whenever Conan was a rerun or Kilborn had a better guest like David Duchovny! Oh gosh, Max Weinberg is playing right now.
His replacement was Jon Stewart. I was told that he'd had a show on MTV but I knew him as Gillian Anderson's love interest in Dancing about Architecture. If I was lucky, I was able to read jokes in magazines, online or see clips on the Sunday news shows. When I went off to college, I finally had cable! There were so many nights where I fell asleep to Jon Stewart. 9/11 is what everyone says but I can't remember Jon then. I remember best when I gave it my all so George W. Bush wouldn't be re-elected and when he was, there was Jon going through the same pain I was and consoling all of us. Two years later, we could celebrate together when the Democrats achieved congressional victories. Both times Obama was elected, it was Jon that told us the official news. I will never forget those moments.
I thought about including a graphic. Should I find my favorite moment of all time when he, Stephen Colbert and Conan O'Brien engaged in an epic three show battle? Should I find the footage of Jon celebrating those victories? Maybe his vigilance on veterans' and first responders' issues that pressed congress to finally act? Maybe he and Stephen being cute?
In the end, it was Stephen who came up with the perfect analogy for everything. I may have mocked others for saying it was all over between them. Stephen will still have a show and Jon will surely appear from time to time, but it will never quite be the same, will it?
It's the final parting and as Stephen said, "You can't leave without your Sam."

Fare thee well.
