Actually, Dr Who WAS on a network channel. I may have only about thirteen and a half, but I remember because it was very cool: this guy can travel through time and space in this deceiving blue box with an awesome inside (it was Victorian then), he's cool and they had that lovely twist concerning his mom. It was like those weird shows on PBS with horrible production values except way, way cooler.
Fox was planning on making it into a series. Unfortunately, my household appears to have been the only one that watched.
You should totally watch Torchwood. Don't let first season scare you off. I mean, I immediately said "I love this show" when they alluded to canon MPREG in the first five minutes of the pilot, but it was very disjointed. It actually makes MORE sense after seeing season two. So, it's best to get through season one, watch season two and then rewatch season one.
I do love the Doctor, I do, but I also like how grounded Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures are. They can't just leave and go off on adventures for months on end. They have responsibilities.
But I suppose if you just wanted to see CoE, then it is written that way as well.
The costumes and music were some of the good things about AWE, I will give you that. It's just not enough to make me sit through it all. When CotBP came out, I loved Jack Sparrow and AWE managed to accomplish something quite special...I got sick of Jack Sparrow.
