Setting
"Jack Harkness, I've had enough of this. Go for a walk. Go brood on a rooftop but you keep getting underfoot worse than Sarah Jane!" Ianto complained as he tried to fix dinner.
"But..." Jack started.
"Out!" Ianto declared and pointed towards the front of the house. Sarah Jane giggled and he doubted it was at her picture book.
"So, I'll be back in thirty..."
"Twenty," Ianto corrected.
"Twenty minutes," Jack spoke with a nod and a bit of a disappointed look. Ianto heard the door shut and it being locked from the outside. Then, he turned to the toddler sitting on the floor.
"You know your trains?" he asked her and she nodded. "I need them and hopefully, they're slightly clean?"
Sarah Jane had already run off for her toys. Ianto checked on the food again and was about to help her when she arrived, dragging the box behind her. Ianto smiled and she laughed.
"You're going to help me set the table tonight. Now, a table's setting is very important and this setting is going to be the most important one of all," he said, taking his daughter in his arms.
"Why?" she asked.
"You'll see," he answered.
"Why?" she asked.
"You'll see," he answered.
"Why?" she asked.
"You'll see," he answered and laughed so she laughed, too. "First, we need to make a large space in the middle for your trains which means we really don't have room for these candles. I could put them on the outside."
Then, he saw how Sarah Jane was reaching for them.
"No, I can't," he realised and put her down. "Here, carry this...slowly."
He gave her one of the candles and they walked slowly to the counter to put them out of the way.
"That's a good girl! Now, pass me the trains," he said and she began giving him the trains.
"Damn," he spat a few minutes later.
"Dam," she repeated and he groaned at his lack of discretion.
"We should have gotten you the big train set. You don't have enough for what I want to do," Ianto tried to explain although she was definitely lost. "We're going to have to use silverware for part of it."
The toddler ran to the correct drawer and he nodded, opening it for her.
"Take some spoons and I'll take some knives, I won't need too many," he said and they carried their silverware back. Then, the timer went off on the cake. Ianto had just enough time to finish his project, serve the food and put Sarah Jane in a nice dress before the door opened again. Hopefully, Jack wouldn't be acting so odd still. Ianto hurried to get him as he came in and took his hand.
"Now, close your eyes," Ianto told him.
"Hmm, can't be too kinky, I can hear Sarah Jane," Jack said and did as he was told. Then, Ianto led him to the dining table. In an assortment of train cars and silverware was spelled out, Will You Marry Me?
Unfortunately, to his disbelief, Jack started to laugh.
"What?" asked Ianto, about to become annoyed at all his hard work being treated this way.
"I remembered that this was our anniversary and I'd been thinking about the same thing," Jack admitted, taking out a jewelry box, "but I hadn't sorted out a way of asking you."
Ianto laughed. They both looked at each other as though daring the other to properly ask. When an abominable amount of time passed, they both said, "Yes" at the same time.
"Yes!" Sarah Jane repeated.
