"What just went on there?" Emyr demanded with more anger than David had seen in quite some time.

"Iefan can read minds, or at least he hears your thoughts," David explained and waited to see Emyr's reaction.

"Actually, that may explain a lot...sometimes, it does feel like he knows what I'm thinking," he said, "but what does that have to do with tonight?"

"Mum thought Lucia might be the same way so she did this game with her about which hand had the candy in it-"

"I saw that," Emyr interrupted as Arcade Fire's Neon Bible played in the background.

"Right...well, she used to do that with Meesh and me and we'd always get the candy-"
He saw Emyr's face process what he was trying to say.

"That's how you always seem to know when I want a coke or what I want for dinner without saying anything," Emyr spoke and David nodded. "And Mica is the same way?"

David nodded again and waited for some further response.

"I think it's cool, like that bald-headed bloke," Emyr spoke.

"Professor X," David said with a smile.

"But what if your mum had her reasons? Not exactly considered normal, is it? What if the people in the black van came to take you away?" Emyr asked.

David was tempted to tell him how Uncle Jack and Gwen were the people in the black vans, even his Uncle Ianto...

Was this because of Uncle Ianto?

His head hurt and he hadn't done the math due tomorrow.

Mica sat on Jack's bed, not wanting to be alone just yet.

"I love you," Jack said into the mobile where Iefan was on the other end. "I'll be back on Saturday, hug Missy and Lula for me but gently. You're my big boy."

There was a pause and Mica could tell Missy or Alice was on the other end again. She'd heard the woman called both things and sometimes that she was Jack's sister and sometimes, his daughter. Uncle Jack always seemed to make things more complicated.

After a few minutes, he hung up and sat on the bed; more sad than she had seen him all day.

"Everything fine?" she asked, not sure what she should do.

"No...yes, I just miss being away from him this long," Jack complained as he still held the mobile. She missed them, too. Mica stood up from the bed and gave Jack a smile before returning to her own room. First, she tried her mum but it went to the answerbox. Maybe she hadn't heard it. Then, she phoned David.

"Mica! How...are you?" he asked and she wondered how to answer that.

"Better...it's hard. I only knew her for such a short time and," Mica lowered her voice, hoping no one else could hear it, "Jack and Luke are a lot worse off than me and she has a lot of things to go through, but it's more cataloging now, seeing exactly what she had. Jack said how Luke doesn't have to decide right now what to do with it all, just so it doesn't end up in the wrong hands. Some of it Jack didn't know and Luke had to tell him."
She laughed at some of the few bright spots.

"Like what?" David asked.

"Well, there was this one thing...apparently, it was a sort of Virtual Pet but from Traken. He'd never seen one before," Mica explained. David was being quiet, a lot more quiet than usual.

"You and Emyr, you're good, yeah?" she asked.

"Yeah, on the bed with me right now," David replied and maybe that's all it was, maybe she had interrupted them.

"I'll go then, tell him Hi for me," she said and hung up. Something still felt off. However, she knew if anything was really wrong that someone would have told Jack on the mobile earlier. She yawned and decided to get ready for bed.

Rhi had gone straight to bed when she came home so it wasn't long before she felt Johnny crawl onto the bed behind her.

"What happened?"

"David, he saw me give Lucia the candy test and he figured out what it was for and that he'd passed and now he's upset that I never told him or Mica and..."

She couldn't help crying and Johnny took her in his arms, kissing her bald head.

"We did the right thing. We didn't want them being taken away from us again..." Johnny spoke and she could hear how much that day had pained him, too. She remembered seeing her babies being taken away from the military and so soon after being told that her brother was gone forever.

"Someday, they'll understand...when they have kids of their own maybe," Johnny spoke and she had to laugh through her tears. She couldn't imagine that at all.

"Have you talked to Jack about it yet?" Johnny asked and she shook her head. "Jack could help. He'd understand."

It was a good idea once they got back from the funeral.

"And if David ever makes you cry again like this, I'll kill him," Johnny teased and Rhi laughed.

Alice woke up and braced herself for what she might find. To say that Iefan was a handful was an understatement. The day before, Alice had found Iefan outside again in the morning without adult supervision even though he knew better.

"What is he up to this morning?" she whispered to herself and left Lucia sleeping on the bed. It wasn't surprising that the toddler wasn't in his room. However, she did find Lula who happily led her to Jack's bedroom where Iefan was sleeping on the bed, clutching Faba with one hand and an undershirt from the hamper with the other.

"Oh, Iefan..." she whispered at how much he was missing their dad. Once again, she thought about how different their childhoods were. Iefan had Jack nearly every day whereas Jack had been more like a frequent guest in her growing up. Still, Alice had been with their dad every day for the past few months as well and it surprised her how much she did miss him these past few days. Iefan opened his blue eyes and yawned.

"Sissy," he spoke and she smiled.

"That's right," she agreed and caressed his face. He stood up and dropped the shirt.

"Come on, you need a new nappy," Alice spoke and took him by the hand.

"No," Iefan refused and went limp.

"Iefan," Alice complained.

"No," he repeated.

"Why?" she asked, not understanding what the problem was.

"No nappy," Iefan spoke, "I beeg boy la Myra."

Oh no, not this, not today, Alice thought and rubbed her bump. Summer would be coming soon and the new baby.

"Iefan, why do you insist on doing these things with your taddy away?" Alice asked and realised she had answered her own question.

"How about I put on a nappy now and we get big boy pants later at the store?" she suggested and Iefan stared at her with a look like he didn't believe her. She was thinking of lying to him, but that was an impossibility with Iefan.

"Fine, I promise," she said and stuck out her pinkie as Lucia liked to do. He took it and shook. She doubted dad was going to be happy about this.

It was Friday afternoon and they were waiting on Maria to show up. Mica had never actually met Maria and she was curious. Maria had known Sarah Jane the longest. Actually, she found it a tad strange that she would wait this long to show up. The funeral was less than twenty-four hours away. Finally, the taxi arrived and Maria got out as Luke got her bags. She was dressed in a business suit and hat with perfect hair. Then, she covered her mouth like she was going to puke. After a moment, she shook her head and continued walking in her heels. She wasn't how Mica had pictured her at all.

"Luke!" she exclaimed and ran to him, almost stumbling. "I need to give up the heels. I'm sorry I couldn't come earlier, but then, Shane couldn't come at all. The department would be in shambles if we both left."

Mica didn't know anything she was referring to.

"Of course," Luke said and nodded.

"When did Clyde and Rani come?" Maria asked as they reached the front door.

"They haven't," Luke answered before shrugging, "interplanetary travel and all."

As the week passed, Mica could make out more and more of Luke's subtle emotions or maybe they weren't becoming as subtle. Either way, she could tell he was hurt by them not showing up yet.

"Hi, you're Jack Harkness. I've heard all about you and your stories, but we've never met. I'm Maria McMillan, formerly Jackson," Maria spoke and held out her hand. Jack took it. Then, she turned back to Luke, asking, "Jo?"

"She's phoned. She'll be here tomorrow for sure but Jack and Mica have been a tremendous help. I don't know what I would have done if they weren't here," Luke spoke and Jack appeared uncomfortable. "Did you want to stay the night?"

"That'd be great," Maria agreed before frowning. "It's just so strange...I keep expecting her to come down the stairs with something new to tell us."

Awww, so glad the candy game was resolved a bit here and Iefan wants to potty train I foresee badly aimed pee on floors and wet pants and frustration ahead. Boys are a pain to toilet train.

Jo? Ever since her episode with Sarah Jane and 11 I've been thinking more and more that I should watch more Classic Who. I've seen a handful of 5, a couple of 6, one of 7, and most of the multiple Doctor specials.

I keep forgetting how much time has passed between CoE and this story and then Clyde and Rani are interplanetary travellers.
:)

Uh oh, potty training time...

I have to confess...I haven't seen all of the Sarah Jane episodes, I'm only on season two so if something seems totally wrong, tell me.

I started with the first episode of One, I found it pretty cheap at Barnes and Noble and I've been trying to watch in order as much as possible but I haven't gotten very far. I'm still on the first season.

Yeah, it's a little complicated sometimes for me, lol.

thanks
