Three Musketeers
Oct. 25th, 2011 01:28 pmSo, I saw Three Musketeers last weekend
First of all, there are certain men, namely Jack Davenport, James McAvoy and Matthew Macfadyen, that have so many television projects where they don't have proper close-ups with the proper filters and lighting and such so when I see them in a close-up on film, it's like...
DAMN, THEY HAVE THE MOST GORGEOUS EYES EVER!
Matthew Macfadyen's eyes are extremely pretty and blue and I loved watching him kick ass. I was really looking forward to a sword fight between him and Orlando Bloom, but it didn't happen. :(
I also think my mom was confusing Tom Quinn with Adam Carter because she said more than once how she thought he had blond hair then...
I have to admit being surprised at the level of faithfulness to the source material, too. It's been a while since the last time I read it but I was able to feel stupid for forgetting things and then I could often guess what was coming next. I did like that they decided to skip Milady's brand this time around.
Oh, that was one of my moments of stupidity, I thought the trailers and all made it seem like Milla Jovanich was the queen, but of course, she was Milady which makes much more sense. I liked the queen. She was independent and feisty but in a believable way for the time period.
I kept hearing "steam punk" before seeing it, but I don't think it really qualifies. Almost everything was portrayed as being an invention of DaVinci or an improvement on such. The only thing that stood out as unnecessary and impossible to us was laser beams...yes, I'm not lying. One scene had LASER BEAMS.
How? You know, HOW?
It was an interesting take on King Louis for a Musketeer film. He's incredibly effeminate. I found myself thinking, well, no wonder she'd go after d'Artagnan or one of the Muskeeters when she's married to a homosexual. Then, to make things more confusing, the king really latches onto d'Artagnan for lady advice and things so by the end, it felt sort of...King/Queen/d'Artagnan=OTP?
Yeah, I know d'Artagnan was supposed to be paired with her Lady in Waiting bu still...
So, Christoph Waltz was awesome because he's always awesome although I enjoyed this role better than Green Hornet. I still wish he'd do a comedy. He seems to be typecast as the villain when he's incredibly funny. If I knew they wouldn't mess it up, I'd want him to host Saturday Night Live but considering what happened when Liam Neeson and Colin Firth hosted...they'd mess it up.
Orlando was fun, but the accent was distracting. He did an American accent that would veer into his Elizabethtown accent especially at the end of words but he was good as a villain. It was nice seeing him in a different role.
I didn't realize James Corden was in it until he showed up. I forgot his name at the time though so it was just, Craig! I was worried at first that he would just be the comic relief but he had some nice moments.
Of course, I loved all three of the musketeers. Athos being all ninja-like was a surprise but I was able to guess Aramis and Porthos right away, even in disguise and I felt they were all very in character. I was hoping for some post-film Athos fanfiction but I haven't found any...
I was concerned about Logan Lerman. I was impressed by his work in Hoot and 3:10 to Yuma but then Percy Jackson...it was just so...BAD. I thought he made a pretty good d'Artagnan though. d'Artagnan is supposed to be incredibly young and they usually don't address that well in adaptations. Here, you can see how all three are old enough to be his father. OH! I have to tell you about this scene that really stood out for me. First, I have to explain about one of my favorite unfilmed Pirates of the Caribbean scenes. Instead of finding out her father is dead on the Empress, Norrington apologizes to Elizabeth. It doesn't work, she steals his sword and tries to hurt him but he catches the sword in his hands. It's like he thinks he deserves the physical pain for not doing more, for being a party to Beckett's evilness. I liked the idea of James' white gloved hands with the blood. It's very dramatic but it was taken out before filming. In Three Musketeers, there's a duel between d'Artagnan and Rochefort. At one point, d'Artagnan grabs the sword by his hands; a stark contrast to how professional he was able to be earlier. I liked the grittier, bloodier look to them. It seemed more real. Unfortunately, they seemed to forget d'Artagnan's cuts to his hands by the next scene but I really liked it at the time.
Oh, and the music was by a guy I've never heard of before and he was totally ripping off/making an homage to Hans Zimmer's work on Pirates. Still, all in all, I had a lot of fun with it.

Date: 2011-10-25 09:21 pm (UTC)The movie was kind of silly, but I think it acknowledged it was silly and just went for it. I kind of enjoyed it even though I rolled my eyes a lot.
