It was a fitful sleep and broken by the chirp of his phone.
“Jack Harkness here,” he announced and was answered by the voice of Lois once more, “Don’t bother traveling to Northwood today. They changed the rules to allow only family and next of kin to pick up the bodies and they have to come inside to do so within the next five days.”
“So, only family with the proper security clearance…”
“Lowered to a level three for the time being which would be most of Thames House…”
“But not Rhi or Johnny,” Jack spoke, bowing his head.
“I don’t know how you’re going to pull this off. Everyone knows you, Rhys and Gwen now. You’re bloody famous,” Lois commented and he sighed.
“I have the proper security clearance…”
“But you’re not family,” she interrupted and he hated that she was right except he wasn’t going to let that stop them.
“Thanks,” he told her and hung up before she could say anything else. An idea was starting to form in his head.
“Did I hear your mobile ring?” Gwen asked; shuffling along in her pink bathrobe.
“Yeah,” he confirmed and pulled the quilt closer, “They changed the rules again.”
She sat down on the arm of the floral patterned couch.
“Only family members can pick the bodies up and they have to be able to enter Northwood,” Jack spoke and reached for his undershirt.
“Which Rhi and Johnny don’t have,” she said with a frown and then her face lit up, “Did Ianto list you as his medical contact?”
Jack shut his blue eyes, sighed and opened them; dousing her enthusiasm with, “No, he never changed it. His sister is still the primary contact.”
Something was formulating in his mind which he wasn’t sure about except there appeared to be no other choice.
“I think I have a plan, but I’ll need a computer, a color printer and possibly a scanner,” he recited from his head.
“Rhys has all that in his office, I’ll make brekkie and we can go,” Gwen spoke and squeezed his bare arm.

“You still won’t explain what you did?” she asked later as they parked outside the gate at Northwood.
“No,” Jack uttered and wouldn’t look at her, “but I need your gun.”
“Why? I thought you said the plan was going to work,” the young woman complained and he couldn’t blame her. He’d been too ashamed to tell her what he’d done.
“Just in case they need more persuading and if anyone calls your phone, your name is Annemarie Prevensie and you’re a registrar, remember that,” he said, gathering up the papers and the gun. He could still hear her calling after him, but he didn’t want her judgement yet, not until he knew whether it had worked or not.

Jack and the military officer, Harper, laid the body bag in the backseat. They’d really need to replace the SUV soon.
Johnny’s car had come in handy since his Boxster was only a two-seater. He shut the back door and saluted the soldier who did likewise. Then, he entered the driver’s side and felt Gwen’s stare before he saw it.
“Jack Harkness, what did you do?” she spat and he grimaced before reaching into his coat and pulling out the papers he’d made. As soon as she started reading them, her mobile went off. He watched as she took it out, looked at it and showed him the caller identification: Rhiannon Davies.
“I believe that’s for you,” she spoke and he took it.
“Captain Jack Harkness here,”he answered and braced himself for what was to come.
“You?! What’s this about a General Oduya calling me about whether my brother was married? I said yes, but if he wasn’t even sure what you two were, there’s no way you two were married,” came the shrill voice of Rhi into his ear.
“I had to, they were only allowing family members with military clearance to claim the bodies,” he explained and there was a sigh at the other end.
“Did you get him?” she asked.
“Yes,” he replied and could hear the stifled sobs. After a sniff or two, she spoke again, “Still…I’ve never even seen you.”
Jack ran a finger over the steering wheel and thought about what to do next. Gwen was peering at him intently.
“You’re right, how about tonight?” he suggested, “Buy you dinner?”
There was hesitation before she answered, “Alright then, if you know where it is, then pick me up in Johnny’s car. Otherwise, call me. I don’t want you picking me up in something flashy and making the neighbors talk.”
“Tonight it is…bye,” he agreed and ended the call, handing the mobile back.
“How much are you going to tell her?” Gwen asked, still holding the papers.
“I don’t know,” he said, being honest. He needed to tell her which mortuary to deal with and the required things…but she deserved to know more than that; the truth about how her brother died. Putting the car in drive, he took off.
“Because she’s smart like Ianto. She figures things out and she already knows about aliens, even asked if this had to do with Daleks like last time,” the Welshwoman spoke and he studied the road.
“The twenty-first century is when it all changes,” he said as he passed a sedan full of laughing kids, “maybe this is it.”
“Except you always said we had to be ready and we weren’t,” Gwen complained and he saw how her gaze went to the backseat. Everytime he looked in his rearview mirror, he could see the body bag.
“And it was all my fault,” Jack mumbled. Unfortunately, she must have heard it.
“It was not. This is Torchwood. It’s a dangerous profession. We know that. We do it anyway because someone has to,” she told him and he gritted his teeth.
“Spare me the pep talk. I’m supposed to be the leader. I’m supposed to keep all of you in one piece and I haven’t. I’ve let four of you die. That’s four people who had favorite books, their whole lives ahead of them and people that loved them. I’m responsible. I should have pushed us harder or developed more equipment or…”
“It wasn’t your fault!” Gwen screamed at him; scaring him for a second, but he just couldn’t believe her.
“If I had just made him stay behind and not taken him to London with me,” he spoke in a hoarse tone, “he’d still be alive.”
It had been selfish on his part to let him come. He should have known the risks. They’d used an alien virus before. It was only because he liked having Ianto by his side. It just felt right. Ever since they had caught Myfanwy together, it had felt right and hadn’t been able to remember the last time he felt like that. Maybe with Lucia…
“And he never would have let you get away with that. He’d have gone to London on his own to stand by your side. That man would have gone with you through anything because he loved you and you can’t love Jack Harkness without knowing the risks. He knew what that meant. He knew how long you’ve lived, what you’ve done and he loved you anyway,” Gwen told him and he could hear the tears in her voice.
“I know,” he said yet he couldn’t tell her how much it hurt. It physically hurt not to have him there.
When the silence was becoming unbearable, he heard Gwen’s voice, “Jack Harkness and Ianto Jones enter into this civil partnership on the 20th of March of the year 2009. Oh, and look, apparently, Rhi and I were able to attend or at least our signatures were. This is a really good forgery, Jack. You always left that sort of thing to Tosh or Ianto…I thought maybe there was something you couldn’t do.”
“Not a chance,” he replied with a smile.
“How did you get this so perfect? If I didn’t know better, I’d have thought it was real,” she praised and he decided he could tell her this.
“It used to be my living. Before Torchwood, I was a con man and a thief. I could forge half the papers in the galaxy, steal a Zaakrosian space hopper in under a minute and weasel out of death sentences by sleeping with the executioner,” he said and couldn’t help having a fondness for that time. Even though it was wrong, things were simple then. He didn’t have to worry about right or wrong or responsibility.
“I showed you how to steal a car,” she said, confused.
“No, I let you show me how to steal a car because it made you happy,” he corrected and pulled into a parking spot.
“Oh,” she uttered in a soft voice.
“Come on,” he told her, getting out of the car and popping the boot to retrieve two hard hats, “and put this on.”
