Pretty sure he looks that way because his magic is adversely affecting him because he's using his illusionary powers & it just happens to be affecting him espc. outside of Asgard bc Midgard has such a limited power source to draw from.

( that's just my head-canon reasoning behind it though )

Yes, he does. And he doesn't look much better at the beginning of The Avengers, either. Which just adds to my headcanon that the Chitauri tortured him.

To me, some of it looks like burns and we know how fast/easily he can heal from the Hulk smashing so he must have really gone through Hell.

Actually, it kind of made me think of Torchwood. Ever see that?

There was an episode where a portal sucked in a teenage boy who then had to witness a decaying star. It both drove him mad and gave him burns all over his body.
