After a sip of his strawberry and banana smoothie, Jack started to read through of the rest of the entries for that month.
“October 10, 2005 Sometimes, I wonder what secrets Torchwood is hiding. I have a high enough security clearance for almost all of the archives and have read everything on The Doctor which amounts to next to nothing. I refuse to believe that’s all we have, but I’m not sure about how to find out more. Also, Lisa needs to de-scale her kettle,” the former leader of Torchwood recited as he looked up at a little girl in pigtails running and enjoying the Spanish beach.
“November 16, 2005 This morning as I gave Yvonne her drink, I pretended to look at a photo of the original Torchwood house in Scotland. Since she insists on everything being so spotless, I could watch her typing her ID and password. Now, I can access anything in the archives. I’ve already read everything on The Doctor. The theories on his parentage were particularly interesting. I don’t dare bring this book to work. They check everywhere we go on the internet even when we’re not at work, but they don’t check old-fashioned ink and pen. I hope the lady who smells like cats isn’t doing her laundry again tonight. It appears that she waits for a month before doing it. I shudder at the thought,” Jack read and smiled because he tended to be particular about his laundry. He had also found out the real reason behind the old-fashioned diary, but what intrigued him the most was that hint about the Doctor’s parentage. What could be so interesting about two Time Lords having a child? Although he couldn’t recall the Doctor ever talking about his family except that they were all dead.
“December 16, 2005 Lisa has informed me that we are going CAMPING. IN JANUARY. IN BRITTANY. I have to wonder about her sanity. What if there are wolves? Some of reports in the archives suggest that werewolves are even real,” he recited and changed position, “He’s right about the werewolves. Queen Victoria was scratched by one.”
“December 22, 2005 It’s all gone, all of it. Our server is perfect; no one can hack it and certainly not enough to implant a virus. Gareth says no hacker has even heard of the ‘Bad Wolf Virus’, or at least none are claiming responsibility and why did it just happen to only erase any information pertaining to The Doctor? At least, I still remember all of it,” the man read, “That was Rose’s doing. She also saved your papa’s life, but…I’ll explain that when you’re older.”
Explaining his immortality was never a fun conversation to make. However, he did have a perfect record of not dying in front of his children and he was hoping to keep it that way. One day when Melissa was Mica’s age, he had argued with Lucia and in retaliation, she’d told Melissa that her daddy was a freak. The next year, Melissa became Alice and their relationship was never the same. His stomach grumbled and he took a break for lunch.
Ianto had to work on Christmas in 2005. Every Torchwood employee did, even the ones in Cardiff. It’s what happens when an alien species is threatening the planet.
“Father Christmases and Christmas trees that try to kill people, is nothing sacred?” the former leader of Torchwood recited and remembered those events, “I hope they never come back. Oh, he knew about the energy beam capable of destroying ships. Well, he did know everything. I liked Harriet Jones, so did Ianto, but she’s dead, too, Daleks.”
The baby squirmed on that last word and he rubbed his bump, trying to sooth it, saying, “But I’m not going to let anything or anyone hurt you, I’d kill them first.”
This did nothing to calm the baby inside him so he kept the hand on his belly and tried to give it nice thoughts as he continued reading December 2005.
“December 27 2005 A spacecraft crashed into the Thames today except it was all a ruse, never a dull day at Torchwood. Dead Prime Minister, Ministry members and what does Yvonne rant about? That Harkness sent in his own medical officer instead of one of our London employees. In her mind, he should have never known at all, but he seems to know when something happens, involving the Doctor. I’m just hoping on a quiet Christmas holiday next year, preferably with Lisa,” Jack read and cringed because the next year would be 2006.
“January 21, 2006 It was COLD! Sharing a sleeping bag should have been fun, but we both had our coats on to conserve heat and we were still freezing. To top it all off, our morning wake-up call was a dog pissing on the tent. At least, Lisa has promised never to take me camping again,“ he recited and wish he’d known that earlier. He’d never have thought it was a good idea to bring him to the Brecon Beacons either.
In February 2006, Ianto joked about moving in together and Lisa took him at his word. Jack couldn’t help comparing their one year of dating compared with the almost two years it took for them to move in together and whether it would have taken even longer if he hadn’t developed issues with sleeping in the enclosed space.
“March 26, 2006 Yvonne has started speaking in coded terms about a secret project. This can never end well…,” the man read, “Oh, Ianto, how right you were.”
The complicated thing about the Battle of Canary Wharf was that while it was horrible; it brought Ianto to him. If it wasn’t for Yvonne and her Cybermen, he wouldn’t be pregnant right now.
“April 12, 2006 Gareth has started copying my style. I wouldn’t mind except he showed up today in a suit exactly like the one I bought in January. I think he’s trying to impress Adeola, but he should find his own way of doing it…” the former leader of Torchwood recited with a smile except that he knew Gareth and Adeola didn’t make it.
“May 18, 2006 Yvonne called me to the very top of the new construction taking place. She pointed to a large black ball and asked if I’d ever read anything about it in the archives. I think she knows I’ve been using her password. However, the ball is unlike anything I’ve ever seen or read about. At that point, I should have kept quiet and been on my way. Of course, I didn’t. I just had to say something. The ball is just ‘wrong.’ It feels wrong and it shouldn’t be there. It should be left alone. Naturally, she wants to open it and when I insisted it felt wrong, I was rewarded with additional testing. Today, they tested on all the training I originally received and when I had improved, they added yet more tests. I believe the first person to discover automatic writing needed to get out more. Somehow, they claim I wrote, ‘Say no to def’ which makes no sense and for once, they agreed. Not that it stops them from expecting me tomorrow for more,” Jack read and gasped in shock, “’def’ would be the 4th, 5th and 6th letters of the alphabet.”
Had Ianto known? Was Rhi right? He didn’t know what to think anymore and that’s where the second diary left off.
Jack tried to sleep, but if he laid down, then the baby tended to be more active and he’d have to think about Torchwood One subjecting Ianto to those tests. He’d known London tested everyone and that the Welshman had passed those tests better than most from what had been in his file. However, Ianto had never talked about it and Jack hadn’t pressed him.
In the early morning hours, he gave up and starting read the third diary under the lights on the patio. It started the next day with more tests. He was asked to appear in a room down the hall to prove Bilocation. After twenty minutes, they finally believed he wasn’t capable of it.
For the next test, Ianto was given a bone and told to tell them where it came from. He couldn’t tell them and hoped they would give up except they didn’t. They took him in a car to another location while he was blindfolded and led him to a room where they asked what he could hear.
“Screaming, I know I sound like an absolute nutter, but there was screaming and moaning and I was chilled to the bone because I was surrounded by people in pain. I ripped the blindfold off and I was alone with the three testing experts. We were in an old stone room that couldn’t have been used in decades.
‘Excellent results,’ the oldest of the other employees had said and I was taken away again,” he recited from the book and sighed.
