Martin Freeman played Arthur Dent and plays John Watson, to begin with ... This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate...

In the fourth book of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, there is a brilliant yet crazy man who is an expert on dolphins.

His name?

John Watson

By this time, Arthur has hooked up with a person who some consider slightly crazy and plays a stringed instrument.

Then, in the next book, Arthur gets a limp.

I found it amusing. (shrugs)

So, about Fenchurch, she specifically plays the cello. She suddenly disappears and it was so abrupt that I had to re-read because I was worried that she was in ship crash. She wasn't. *phew* However, since she does play the cello and believes in the extraordinary possibilities...I want a crossover where she's Phil's cellist. It would be awesome.

Then, the book reminded me how Trillian was an expert mathematician and astrophysicist before she went off on her travels which made me wonder about what would happen if she and Jane Foster met...

Except for that part where Trillian was going to go off with Thor until she was cock-blocked by Arthur...

Actually, Jane Foster was in the medical field until the first Thor film, so maybe cinematic Jane Foster and her intern, Darcy, are actually based off different facets of Trillian?

I only have sixty pages left and I really don't want it to end. While each book separately might not be impressive, the entire compendium is one of the best books I have ever read. The problem with finishing a book is that you have devoted so much more time and brainpower to a book than a film. They become your imaginary best friends and then...they're gone...

I know that Eoin Colfer has written a sixth book but the two times I tried...I couldn't get into his writing. I read one of those Artemis Fowl and it was boring. Then I tried a book read by Jack Davenport and couldn't finish it...and again, it was being read by JACK DAVENPORT! I listened to Tom Hollander reading A Clockwork Orange multiple times.

The thing about Douglas Adams is that he has the sarcasm and humor, but then in the next moment, he could either verge into satire or a deep insight into life or both.

"So what's the point of showing me something I can't see?"

"So that you understand that just because you see something, it doesn't mean to say it's there. And if you don't see something, it doesn't mean to say it's not there. It's only what your senses bring to your attention."

I haven't bothered with Eoin Colfer's H2G2 book because he's not Douglas Adams. It can't imagine it will be as good as even the worst of the H2G2 books (god, I hate Random so much and Trillian became incredibly unlikable- the pair of them ruined the one book for me).

In related news, I bought Shada yesterday! It's Gareth Roberts but he novelized Douglas Adams' screenplay so it's still Douglas Adams and still counts. I've only gotten a few pages in but it has the perfect Adams tone so I think that bodes well.

I also learned that the BBC did a reconstruction of Shada, which I somehow didn't know about. Guy at the bookstore told me. I need to find it and watch it. He says it's narrated by Tom Baker. I'm totally off-topic. Sorry. Well, it's still Douglas Adams related so it's sort of on-topic, I guess.

Even more fun than Martin playing both Arthur & John Watson is that he actually reads the audiobook version of So Long and Thanks For All the Fish, too. ;)

There have actually been a couple of different treatments of Shada prior to Gareth Roberts novelization. Per Wiki--

"In 1992, its[Shada] recorded footage was released on video using linking narration by Tom Baker, who played the Doctor in the serial, to complete the story.

The script, with adaptations, was later produced by Big Finish Productions as an audio play, with animation and was made available on BBCi and the BBC website in 2003. This version saw Paul McGann take on the role of the Doctor, with Lalla Ward reprising her role as Romana II, with an otherwise different cast."

The book is the third treatment. ;)

I though Eoin Colfer did a great job with the Hitchhiker book. The language, pacing and story feel and read like Adams not Colfer.

Huh. I never noticed the john Watson connection before. That's rather amusing!

I think Jane and Trillian would get along very well if they ever met, though Trillian might try to move in on Thor and that would create issues.

I don't think book characters are ever gone. They are always kicking around in my head.
