Yep, it's finally happening, my review of Iron Man 3.

Spoilers

So, you know how much I was sort of dreading this. I wasn't sure how much I'd like it. However, they realized the perfect weapon to use against me...

Start with a 90s song...namely, "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" by Eiffel 65. Right away, I'm starting to think my fears were completely unfounded. We're even having a flashback to the 90s, complete with horrible hair for Happy. I'm laughing and smiling.

Yinsen! (hugs)

Some people had problems with Tony leaving Killian on the roof and that causing Killian to hate him. I was kind of okay with this because of the symmetry. Tony leaves Killian on a roof in 1999 and Killian allows that slight to fester into hatred. Tony leaves Pepper on the roof in 2008 and Pepper gets sort of peeved but understands it's just what Tony does...
We see how two people reacted to the same situation quite differently.

I wasn't sure how I liked how they wrote Pepper with regards to Tony's panic attacks. However, I've had a number of people assure me that it is a realistic portrayal of a hard situation so I'll take their word for it.
Also, I had never thought about it before but Pepper doesn't really have friends. Obviously, it would be hard in that kind of job to keep them but we always see her with Tony's friends and now we see that they immediately tattle on her to Tony so that wouldn't work either.
The only person in the films that we've really seen her sort being a girl with: chatting about dates and personal stuff is...Coulson so I kind of wonder if that's another big problem with dealing with Tony, that she doesn't have her safety net/person to complain to anymore.

Wait a minute, if Pepper used to work for/with Killian and Killian already had AIM in 1999? Did she work for AIM?
Nope, let's not address that...naturally.

So, are we ever getting MODOK?

I did really like Tony and Rhodey's relationship in this one. It felt more like the first film.

Did you just kill Happy? You're not allowed to do that!!!
Plus, as I explained on opening night, the Extremis people creep me out so very, very, VERY much.
(shudders)
This was the point where I started being a little ambivalent again.

RESCUE!

Okay, I didn't get the full RESCUE experience in that scene but I was still pretty happy with that. She was a little unsure but you could tell how smart she is and how she did seem to have been in a suit at least once before.

"I loved you in A Christmas Story."

Okay, most people seem to be like, yay, I get that reference! There's more to it than that which is awesome. Ralph Billingsley who played the character he's referring to, was an Executive Producer on the first Iron Man. Actually, he was even IN the film. He's the scientist that Stane berates for not miniaturizing the arc reactor, Stark did this in a cave!

Harley was fun. I definitely liked Tony, the man child, forced to befriend an actual child. I do agree that I would love a girl dynamic in the future.

Here are my problems with the Harley subplot...

When you constantly tell me about someone but you don't actually SHOW that someone, I'm forced to conclude that they don't actually exist...or they're dead, like Psycho.
We never see Harley's sister. I mean how cute would that be, at least for one scene?

Also, they kept mentioning 6 years ago. It was six years since the Extremis attack there, six years since Harley's dad left and his sister was six years old. Apparently, it was a coincidence that his dad left the same time as the attack? I guess we're supposed to conclude that his dad didn't want another kid and split?
Or is making up a little sister Harley's own way of coping? It's said that imaginary friends often appear when a child is dealing with a crisis or stressed in some way.
Yes, he did have the Dora watch but I had stuff that was "Wendy's", too.

However, I was enjoying the moments with Tony and Harley so I was actually disappointed when Extremis showed up even though it was a women so kudos for that. Marvel is lacking in the female villains on screen. Some of the actions scenes felt shoe-horned in rather than being a natural disruption in events in order to further the plot. I did love when he got caught in the news van by a fan.

I wonder if Coulson watched Downtown Abbey.

I did love that they reminded the audience that Tony was good with weapons before Iron Man. When they were attacked in Afghanistan, he didn't hesitate to pick up the gun and shoot. I especially liked in this film how he had the taser system that seemed VERY inspired by Black Widow and yes, she DOES use the Widow's Bite against a Chitauri in New York. I often have to argue that.

Considering the Iron Man films have changed so much already and then that's been added to the original comics...Pepper ending up with Tony instead of Happy, Agent Coulson as a character...I was kind of...okay with the twist especially since I knew about it ahead of time. Ben Kingsley got to show off his more comedic acting, since I think I'm the only one who saw The Dictator. Also, they did add dragon tattoos to Killian, it was just a pity that there wasn't much time to see them during the final battle.

When they did the whole thing on Air Force One...I kind of wanted the movie to be over at that point, or at least I was definitely looking at my watch. I'm sorry, I thought that whole scene was pointless. The only thing it did was set up the Vice President while also showing why he did what he did which reminded me of that episode in The West Wing where the legislator was filibustering because of his grandchild with Autism.

I was excited about Rebecca Hall in this. I've been a fan of her for a while now, but...
I thought maybe she had just got caught up in her work and developed a God complex where she justified what they were doing but then they tried to make it into still being upset over his one night stand and...
SERIOUSLY? NO.
The only acceptable outcome of this is that she's not really dead and pops up again in the future. Otherwise, you made her character pointless and I won't forgive you for that. Just like I never forgave Disney for making me all excited for Penelope Cruz being in a Pirates film and then they ruined Anjelica into an unlikable stereotype/triteness.

Even though I knew she would come back, I still almost cried when they made us think Pepper died. It was bad enough that Tony still thinks Agent's dead and he's not even mentioned at all except for being part of New York.
When they find out he's actually alive, Tony and Pepper are probably going to simultaneously hug him and smack him. I know I definitely felt his absence. It like was when I watched Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, I knew Norrington was dead but I still kept expecting him to show up.

I did like the idea of Pepper getting Extremis. It was a nice twist from Tony willingly injecting it into himself. Obviously, the whole jealous unrequited lover takes woman who then has to be rescued by current requited lover has been done to death but Pepper defeating Killian herself? Yep, that was better. Also, the exchange where Killian says how he almost had Pepper perfect and Tony says she already was.

UGH!

Umm, the suits blowing up...okay, I suppose that makes sense. It had given you a complex and you were using them like a security blanket and they could be a HUGE security risk in the wrong hands.

If you could ditch the arc reactor that easily, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF IRON MAN 2???
What are you going to do next time that Loki or someone has a "magical glow stick of destiny"?

Everyone says the necklace was made from his shrapnel to mirror Pepper's gift in the first film but how do you know that for sure? Where are they? New York?

How did you cure Pepper? Why can't we have Rescue in the future? Why can't we have all three being awesome together like in Iron Man: Armored Adventures?

So, it's nice that Tony upgraded Harley's shed and all but...Harley did explain then about how he'd been alone in the shed with a middle-aged guy, right? Wouldn't his mom or someone had noticed the workmen and stuff? Especially the FIOS part?

I mean you have like a three hour movie and you try to wrap up things in three minutes with almost no dialogue except Tony's narration...and like Tony is a faithful narrator...

Just no...

Actually, my favorite part of the film was finding out that the narration all along was actually Tony telling what happened to Bruce Banner AND that it had put Bruce to sleep! Nice.

When the credits came on, I almost felt like it had switched to the end of a Tarantino movie. I suppose that was very Shane Black? I don't know, I feel asleep during Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang. I just wish Coulson had been pictured...I mean even Gary Shandling is pictured!

But on the ride home, my brother asked if that was the last Iron Man because it did feel very final.

I guess I liked it better than I thought. My first impression was that I border-line hated it. There were things I liked. If my mom decided to see it when I was available, I'd go with her but I'm not going to pre-order or buy it unless it's a really good deal...like maybe the set for Phase 2.

Did you happen to catch the premiere of Avengers Assemble on Disney XD on Sunday? There was MODOK to be had.

I dunno. I found it to be watchable, but I'm still bitter about the cancellation of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Oh, wow, that is so cool! Thanks for that fun fact!

I was really disappointed with what happened with Rebecca Hall's character. I was shocked, actually, during my first watch, and then even during my second and third I was astounded that the writers went in that direction.
