Part Three
“What’s the worst that could happen? So, you regenerate into a new body, it’s not so bad,” Jack spoke as they stood between stalls.
“But I really liked this body,” the Doctor complained, “and I still have to die in the process.”
There was a chuckle from the other man.
“I remember more than one day where I died no less than ten times and you’re complaining about once,” he said and the Time Lord hated how right he was, “At first I even sort of missed it, but now, it’s a nice trade-off, swollen ankles for not having to die every other day.”
He really did hate that Jack was right. Wasn’t he the one who used to give the young man advice about what to do? However, the man beside him was nowhere near young anymore.
“Look, how adorable, a romper suit!” exclaimed the former leader of Torchwood as he held up a small, blue article of clothing. He didn’t have the heart to point out that the leg holes were four too many to be for a human. A thought seemed to strike’s Jack’s mind and he watched to see if he’d get an explanation.
“I haven’t bought any of it. I’m totally unprepared. I don’t have romper suits or nappies or formula,” the man spoke in a voice that gradually became faster, “I haven’t even got bottles to put the formula in!”
The Doctor had to smile. His enthusiasm was one of Jack's better qualities and he had seen it far too seldom since he had joined him onboard again. He was sure that he could turn that anxiety into enthusiasm after a minute or two.
“Then, we can buy all of that today, come on,” he tried to reassure him, “No need to get upset over it.”
It was a nice change of pace to follow the expectant parent around as they found everything he’d need. An hour passed in that manner until they reached a store that sold toys. There were little robot dogs not as sophisticated as K9, plush Adipose babies and small plastic blasters for play.
“Isn’t that cute?” Jack remarked and picked it up, but when his finger reached for the trigger out of habit, a change seemed to come over him. He dropped the toy like it was hot and whispered, “Nothing will die, all things will change.”
“Tennyson, isn’t it? Never met him yet,” The Doctor commented rather than call attention to his strange behaviour.
“No, no guns,” the other uttered as if to himself and clutched the plush dinosaur in his left arm, “Yeah, it’s Tennyson.”
He stretched with a pained expression.
“You alright, Jack?”
“Yep, just a backache, been on my feet too long,” the former leader of Torchwood replied and brushed a hand through his short brown hair, “Just eight more weeks, that’s not too bad.”
As much as he’d like to believe that the other man had come around to his way of thinking about guns, there was something not right about it, but they had something bigger to discuss.
“Where did you want to go for the birth? Anywhere in the fifty-first century? Refusis II? Cardiff in the future?” the Time Lord asked as they headed for the cashier. He had the definite feeling that Jack was avoiding the question as he paid the Jacondan. When they exited, the other finally spoke.
“Actually, I was thinking…you’re a doctor, couldn’t you do it?” Jack asked without looking at him.
“But I don’t have the specific equipment for that or a proper room; I’ve never delivered a male pregnancy,” he stated because the idea was insane.
“But I’d trust you more than some stranger,” the other argued while finally facing him, “You know better how much this baby means to me.”
Well, in theory, he could do it. It wasn’t as though he hadn’t seen all of Jack before. Half the known galaxy had probably seen all of Jack before. However, the sonic screwdriver couldn’t be used that way. It didn’t work on flesh.
“You wouldn’t happen to have a laser torch in that coat you’re so fond of?” he inquired with his hands in his pockets again.
“No,” the former leader of Torchwood answered, “but does that mean you’ll do it?”
Against his better judgment, he nodded and muttered, “Maybe there’s one in the TARDIS.”
Being Jack, maybe it was better to have him under supervision anyway, he thought as the man tried to crush him in a hug. However, the protruding belly made a full hug impossible.

Nothing much happened over the next week and a half when he returned to the TARDIS one afternoon to find Jack poking the top part of his bump. There was a huge grin on his face.
“What are you doing?” the Doctor asked, coming closer.
“We’re playing a game. I poke it in the foot and they kick back,” he explained while doing it.
“Doesn’t that hurt?” the Time Lord questioned while leaning over the chair.
“The baby’s going to kick anyway, might as well have fun out of it as long as I don’t get kicked in the ribs,” Jack replied and then looked at his arm, “What happened to you?”
“Queen Tisref got too close with her sword. It’s not that bad,” he claimed although the blood rolling down from the cut did seem to contradict that. He opened one of the doors and sorted through this and that until he found some gauze. However, he did have a little problem after getting his coat and shirt off.
“Here, let me help you,” the other man said, raising himself out of the chair and waddling over to him. The gauze was hard to wrap one-handed so it was nice to have someone to do it for him.
“Maybe you should reconsider your new rule about companions? What would you have done if I wasn’t here?” Jack inquired as he tied the cloth strip in place. While it did make situations like these earlier, he wasn’t sure it outweighed the costs for his companions or him. He either got them killed or sent to an alternate universe or the point that Sarah Jane had bought up when they reunited. After traveling in space and time, a normal life probably would seem boring.
“No, I would have managed somehow,” he maintained despite the man’s glare. The Doctor went to walk away when Jack grabbed his other arm.
“It’s not that I don’t know how you feel. The baby’s moved into a headfirst position which means its getting ready even if I’m not and I’m definitely not. As long as the baby’s in me, I can protect it,” the man spoke with concerned blue eyes, “but as soon as it’s born, anything can happen and that scares me so much.”
“I know, Jack, but I’m still standing by my decision,” said The Doctor, “but the TARDIS is one of the safest places there is if it makes you feel any better…and you looked so happy when I came back, it’s too bad I ruined it.”
A hint of smile crossed his face at this mention.
“I had the best dream while you were away, I just wish it were real,” he explained while rubbing his bump.
There was no telling what sort of dream that entailed, but being Jack, he assumed it was the kind not intended for young audiences.
“Come on, there should be some ice cream in the kitchen,” the other man suggested and motioned for upstairs.
*********************************************************
The next week, the Doctor was studying the suit which hadn’t been ruined from the sword or the blood when he heard yelling.
“Doctor! Doctor!” Jack screamed and he was dismayed to see him trying to hurry over. At least, he probably wasn’t in labor if he could travel that quickly. The TARDIS was also making happy noises.
“Jack! Jack! You’re going to hurt yourself, slow down!” he chastised and the man slowed down until he reached the Doctor’s room, “What’s the matter?”
“I know what the baby is!” Jack exclaimed with a huge grin, “Ianto just told me in a dream.”
Oh no, he hoped his friend wasn’t slowly losing his mind or something.
“Jack, Ianto’s dead, remember? It was a dream but it wasn’t real,” he uttered with sadness, “I’m sorry.”
The other man shook his head.
“I think we were wrong. I think there might be something there after we die, after the darkness,” Jack argued in his loose-fitting pajamas, “I know you don’t believe me, but he was real and I can prove it. I never found out the sex of the baby, but he said we’re having a boy.”
He couldn’t account for that, but there had to be a reasonable explanation somehow.
