Marvel's Civil War
I admit that I used to be on this bandwagon. The civil war had a lot of awesome parts to it like Steve confirming that he's in favor of LGBT rights, Young Avengers fighting along-side the Runaways, Kate Bishop meeting Clint Barton...without realizing it and Tony crying over Steve's body.
Then, I was slowly forced more and more to acknowledge all the nastier parts of the Civil War. With the novelization of the Civil War, almost all of my favorite parts were stripped away, including one of my favorite characters...Kate Bishop.
My mom absolutely HATED the book.
It made me realize how much I would hate a cinematic version of it especially since there are no Young Avengers except maybe Cassie since this is post-Ant-Man, no Runaways, no Peter Parker and no Fantastic Four.
The rumors made me uneasy. Then, there were those first few episodes of Agents of SHIELD where Talbot and others are discussing who should be in charge of these special cases and what to do about them especially since they don't know all of them out there.
Hmm, you mean you'd want them to...I don't know...REGISTER????
So, it wasn't terribly a surprise for them to announce it, but I still had to meet it more with disappointment.
However, this is what Kevin Feige had to say about it:
"It’s not about the secret identity thing, as much as it is about, overall, who reports to who, and who can agree to oversight committee. Because as of now, in Avengers 2, there is no more security council, there is no SHIELD, obviously. Stark is paying for it, Captain America is running it, and things occur that will make governments begin to question."
So, I guess we can skip the whole Tony Stark and Reed Richards build the ultimate secret prison and the weird Thor clone...
but it seems inevitable that Steve will find out that SHIELD is once again almost fully operational AND headed by his biggest fanboy that he thought to be dead, Phil Coulson?
I'm torn between the delicious drama and feeling so awful for both characters at the betrayal.
Then, there's MCU Tony who seemed so level-headed and incapable of the feats that comic Tony does...until now. If he really does create Ultron, then the audience will be forced to believe him capable of anything. This also makes me kind of sad and where is Pepper? In the MCU, Pepper has become Tony's conscience.
There was a rumor that Speedball and the New Warriors that set up the whole plot would be first introduced on Agents of SHIELD which a lot of people responded with confusion that they would set up film developments on television. I can only assume that these are the people who gave up on AOS in the first eight episodes. IT was AOS who first mentioned the Kree, people who were naturally gifted, hints that SHIELD had grown corrupt and Nick giving Phil SHIELD. Plus, as I mentioned before, they are ALREADY setting up the Civil War on the series.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
This is actually still happening. I'm just as surprised as you are. As always, I hold out against reasonable hope that Jack Davenport will return. Dammit, everyone else that's died has returned in some way! Also, I'm still sore about them killing off Groves and Gillette in the last one.
At least Jack Davenport is still listed on the IMDB page so I get to pretend like when Clark Gregg was listed for Iron Man 3 for the longest time.
We don't have a script. We don't even have a plot. They keep changing villains every day almost. One day it was Javier Bardem which made sense since his wife was in the last one and claimed to love it even though her character was under-utilized horribly. Now they say it'll be Cristoph Waltz but he's also rumored for the next James Bond installment...either way, at least I'd get a Jimmy Kimmel Live! episode out of it. Those are my favorite episodes. Earlier this week, Kimmel found an appearance from 1977...so cute!
I just can't bring myself to have high hopes for this and neither can my mom.
The Fantastic Four
So, you cast Michael B. Jordan and that's pretty awesome, but...
Kate Mora is Sue which begs the question, did you want to make a statement that families can be bi-racial or did you think it would be too controversial for Reed Richards to date outside his race?
Apart from Jordan, I initially thought the casting was all wrong. I'm still not sure how everything will work although the trailers and reviews for Whiplash make me feel better about Miles Teller.
I love Toby Kebbell and I'm sure with the proper script and direction, he could make a fine Dr. Doom. However, either way, it could officially doom him into a life of typecasting.
I was also a little annoyed that the internet always complains about the actors for Wanda and Pietro Maximoff being too white but I have yet to see a single complaint about Dr. Doom's casting.
Victor von Doom's mother was ALSO Romani so shouldn't the same complaints apply about his being too white? You can't complain about the comic background of one character and not another when it's the same thing.
They have changed his name and occupation. He appears to be...a hacker. Let's face it, the earlier films didn't really allow Victor to show off his intelligence. They didn't even have his Doombots as I recall so if he's a genius who prefers to be a hacker but also has incredible mechanical skills...I could accept this.
The more everyone talks up how awful it will be, the more tempted I am to like it just to be different.
Still, I'll be happier when their films rights are restored to Marvel.

Date: 2014-11-14 02:32 pm (UTC)Johnny is suppose to be a blonde hottie.
Bring back Chris Evans. :o
But if Johnny is going to be black then make Sue black too. UGH...
Can't wait for the next POTC. :)
I think that is so cool that you and your mom get into these stories/characters so much. :)
Hugs, Jon

Date: 2014-11-14 10:06 pm (UTC)Second, there are very good reason someone might advocate for Wanda being Romani and not for Doom being Romani, for exemple that Doom is almost guaranteed to be the villain of the movie and a Romani Hollywood!villain is about the last thing the European Romani community needs right now.
Third, you're doing the thing where you take the US concept of race ("too white") and apply it wholesale to Europe as though it's going to fit. Please stop. Europe doesn't work that way.

Date: 2014-11-15 02:55 am (UTC)I kind of wondered if that could be a reason but then, Doom didn't de-Mutant most of the Earth's population and kill multiple people, including Clint Barton...although she did bring most back. Quicksilver has done awful things as well while Doom saved Valeria's life along other heroic deeds mixed in with his evildoing.
I'm sorry if you had the impression that I actually agreed with the complainers. I just felt they were being hypocrites for complaining about Romani presentation of some characters and not others. I posted a tintype of one of my Bavarian relatives and most felt she was either Indian or Mulatto. Thus, yes, I know Europeans come in all colors and Wanda, Pietro and Victor could conceivably have any color skin and it would still be accurate.

Date: 2014-11-15 11:51 pm (UTC)I'm going to assume that's directed at Pietro. (Wanda was on fucking psychotic break that the asshole encouraged. She's not reponsible. he is.)
Also, the comics argument doesn't hold. In France if a Marvel comic trade sells 8k copies, it's a wild success. Compared to the millions in audience the movies are going to have, that nothing.
Honestly? It's not about skin colour, it's about ethnicity. I don't care how white the actors are or aren't, the fact is that they aren't Romani (and/or Jewish in the case of the twins) and that's the fucking problem. I would have settled for Eastern European, if no Romani actors had been found after efforts had been made. But efforts weren't made.

Date: 2014-11-15 03:06 am (UTC)We saw DMC seven times in the theatre because everyone got to be awesome in it. Norrington with his stubble and his uber-snark was so perfect.
It was AWE with the multiple Jacks and Jack playing with his brain and all that asinine madness that cemented the Jack thing without taking into account that he's a peripheral character...in the same way that a Loki or Bruce Banner film wouldn't work, they need people to feed off of.
I don't know how Bruckheimer's falling out with Disney will affect things or the failure of The Lone Ranger which should have proved...
1. Do not let Johnny Depp control the film.
2. Do not let Johnny Depp's character control the film.
Although I will rewatch the brief scene with Liz and James before James dies because I do love how they kissed and sort of resolved everything and dammit...if I ignore that whole Bootstrap thing, I can pretend that James went with Liz to the pirate meeting.
I finally learned to watch Thor without problems but sometimes, when I watch Avengers and Erik Selvig is on, I can't help but think...
You killed Norrington, you bastard!
