Still, Mica could’t help wondering about it all. David was right. The man on the video didn’t seem the type to cuss out a judge or steal or…according to certain pages, fight aliens. Does that mean he even carried a gun?
Over the next year, the questions didn’t go away. Instead, they multiplied as she looked everywhere she could think of for answers, including trying to hack into the government which was a lot more difficult than the movies made it out to be. She still hadn’t succeeded and was forced to admit that she had run out of resources. Mica didn't want to ask her mum who would probably get upset. Also, Mica liked to think of it as her little project; something that was just her own.
It was a Friday in August and she was going to meet Chris and Sian at the movies later, but first, she had to do something for herself. With a deep breath, Mica entered St Woolos and checked the directions again for how to find Ianto’s grave. However, there was already someone there; tall with a blue military coat. Even after all this time and from the back, she’d know him anywhere.
“Uncle Jack!” she screamed as though she was six again and before she even thought about it. The more she had read; the more possessive she had become. He was her Uncle Jack, not theirs. How come they knew more than she did?
His head turned to see her as she ran towards him.
“I don’t think I know you,” he said in an apologetic tone.
“But it’s me, Mica,” she complained, standing still in her tracks, and he shook his head.
“No, Mica’s a little girl,” he argued yet a worried look came over his face.
“I used to be,” the girl explained, “When you came to visit six years ago.”
“Six years…” Jack repeated, rubbed his face with his hands and then turned his whole body to face her. Hidden from her until now was the fact that he wore one of those baby carriers on his front with a baby in it. Her mouth gaped in surprise and she hurried the rest of the way to see it closer. Her brown eyes met the baby’s light blue ones. Then, it squealed. The sound from the baby sounded so odd echoing among all the death that surrounded them. It smiled and she had the weird feeling that she’d seen that expression before.
“Your mum’s going to kill me,” Jack muttered and it came to her.
“My brother! He looks just like my brother when he was a baby!” she said and reached in her pocket for her mobile, “I have it on here for blackma…I mean, as a good sister, look!”
She gave him the mobile except instead of being amused at the coincidence, he seemed to pale a bit.
“My mum would totally freak over it, that’s just odd,” she remarked, “Is this why you were gone so long? Because you were adopting?”
Mica knew that took a long time sometimes although that didn’t explain why no one had seen him all that time.
“No, I never meant for this to happen. I thought this would be July 13, 2010, she said it would be,” Jack spoke, almost to himself as one hand rested on the baby’s back. She wasn’t sure who “she” was or what he meant. Maybe “she” was the mother of the baby.
“Well, it’s August 14, 2015,” she told him and watched Jack cringe before handing the mobile back, “What’s the name?”
“Iefan,” he replied and finally smiled for the first time since she spotted him, “He is four months and twenty days.”
The baby squealed again and grinned although this time, it looked kind of like Jack’s smile.
“Are you going to come home with me then?” she asked and he sighed from his position by Uncle Ianto's grave.
“I need to sort some things out first,” the man speaking in the same way her dad when he couldn't do something because of work, “but I will…it was good to see you.”
She hugged his side and he left before she realized how she had never asked any of the questions she wanted to know. All of those things had seemed so significant yet died on her lips. Despite his insistence, she had her doubts, what if she never saw him again or not for another six years?

For her thirteenth birthday, Mica was asked what she wanted to do which was go to Cardiff for the day and she insisted on Sian and Chris going with her. To her amazement, she also convinced her mum to leave them alone for an hour before dinner. Mica had assumed that would have been a harder challenge. She just needed to take care of her friends. They were standing on the Roald Dahl Plass which the internet people claimed was the roof for Torchwood in Cardiff. Had her uncles worked beneath this very surface? The teenager wondered where the entrances would be. There would have to be at least one for pedestrians and they would have to have at least one vehicle. On the internet, there were pictures of a black SUV that she could almost remember.
Sian and Chris were staring at her as she noticed a green and yellow spider walking across the concrete.
“You never told us what we’re doing before dinner; ghost-hunting in the castle, shopping at a mall, seeing a movie or what?” Sian asked with more than a hint of suspicion in her brown eyes. Was Mica that predictable?
“You and Chris can do what you want, I’ll call you when I’m done and we’ll meet back up before dinner,” she said while feeling the piece of paper in her possession and they both sighed, “What? Don’t tell me you wouldn’t want the alone time, you’re so obvious.”
Apparently, they thought they had been discrete from their shocked looks.
“Well, we would, but that is not…that isn’t the point,” Chris stumbled although at least, he was trying, “What if your mum finds out? She trusts us right now and I don’t want to jeopardize that. You could get grounded and...and I have seen her stare before.”
Sian was nodding with vigor because the stare of disappointment was an amazing sight to behold.
“If she calls one of you, which she won’t, just say that I’m in the loo. I’ll have my mobile if anything comes up,” Mica tried to assure them and they knew not argue the matter any further. Once her mind was made up, there was no changing it.
Since they were still watching her, there was no way she could look for one of the entrances so she walked until she flagged down a cab. Her birthday money would cover it.
“441 Heol y Gwent in Cathays,” she told the man without needing to consult the paper with graying hair.
“Now, listen little girl,” the man spoke with a frown, “You’re going to pay me before I let you leave this vehicle. Every time I let one of you kids ride without mummy and daddy, I get left with nothing.”
“I have the money,” she retorted and tried to do her best imitation of her mum’s glower. It was hard to be so polite, but she didn’t want him to kick her out. She only had about an hour. In a way, she was chasing ghosts except it was only two in particular.
When they reached the destination, she paid the man and stepped out. The house would have blended in with the rest of the block with their brown stonework except that this was framed in blue around the door and windows. At this point, she realized how she hadn’t thought through her plan as well as she should have. For all she knew, here was the house and now she’d have to sort a way back to the city center. She was tempted to try her lock-picking skills, but after almost seven years, it was likely to be owned by someone new and she wasn’t planning on prison today.
Still, it was her uncle’s house and she had wanted to see it at least once. A sporty car was parked on the street and she could see a glimpse of light through the curtains. It was worth a shot; maybe she could convince them to let her in for a few minutes. A couple of toads glared at her from the cracked concrete as she stepped up to the entrance.
