Tomorrowland
May. 23rd, 2015 12:49 amSo Tomorrowland was AWESOME! It had science and history and fun stuff and the main character was a girl who got to save the world and it PASSED THE BECHDEL TEST! and she DIDN'T have a love interest.
I loved it but there were only 20 people there and the reviews are mixed and it doesn't look good for it doing well...
and if it doesn't do well, then they'll point at it and go, "See, this is why you should NEVER HAVE A GIRL BE THE PROTAGONIST! We will never make that mistake again!"
dammit
It was so good. I want to see it again.
If you're a hardcore Disney fan so that you know the words to "It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow", just the sight of Space Mountain makes you grin and you enjoy The People Mover, you NEED to see this movie.
This is how I described it on Facebook:
Okay, if you're a geek, nerd, born optimist, history buff, science aficionado, Disney lover or enjoy adventure films with female protagonists that PASS the Bechdel test and don't include romance, GO SEE TOMORROWLAND!
I knew as soon as they had the 1964 World's Fair complete with Sherman Brothers songs and It's a Small World before going on to reference Jurassic Park and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy all within the first 15 minutes! that Tomorrowland owned me and that was before the NASA aspect showed up!

I am a HUGE Disney fan, so I loved the beginning and the historical feel. :)
I might have to go again and see if things improve for me. :p
I think part if it is that with previous Park related movies it was much more ride oriented. Where as Tomorrowland just kind of took the "future" concept. I hope it does okay. :o

Date: 2015-05-23 07:42 pm (UTC)It instantly had me with a lack of violence (like blood violence), the main character didn't seem whiny and that she doesn't have a love interest makes me extra wanna see it!

Date: 2015-05-24 04:00 am (UTC)First of all, there are robots...
technically, audio animatronics, of course...
But they look just like humans and they do die in this film.
One of those deaths leads to a scene with crying that could be stressful for some viewers. I was having so much fun and expecting the death to be fixed that I didn't even tear up.
I don't know how well she does with death.
There is also human death. The robots carry weapons that basically vaporize you.
Does she watch the news? Does she have to be protected from stuff like that?
The major theme of the film is that humanity is so bombarded by images of death, despair, war, famine, climate change that we've just accepted it and given up...but we're shown those images even though the idea is that we can still change our Tomorrow into how we want if we still have the courage to follow our dreams...and now I'm wanting a double feature with the live action Cinderella since it encouraged "have courage and be kind" so I realize that they really do kind of go together.
Otherwise, it does have two wonderful female characters who are smart, capable, resourceful and one of them can kick a LOT of butt!
